Mr. Jabbar, who officials confirmed was honorably discharged from the Army, had converted to Islam at some point, according to Dwayne Marsh, who is married to Mr. Jabbars ex-wife Nakedra Charrlle. Mr. Jabbar and Ms. Charrlle had two daughters, ages 15 and 20, Mr. Marsh said, adding that the girls are a mess after the attack.
In recent months, he said, Mr. Jabbar had been acting erratically, being all crazy, cutting his hair after converting, Mr. Marsh said. Mr. Marsh and his wife then stopped allowing the daughters to spend time with Mr. Jabbar, he said.
In a YouTube video from 2020 that appears to have been posted by Mr. Jabbar, he spoke positively about his skills in real estate. He said he had been born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, and had served in the U.S. military.
Ive been here all my life, with the exception of traveling for the military, he said. Court records from his first divorce, in 2012, list his employment as active duty with the U.S. Army and his residence at the time as Fort Bragg, in North Carolina.
In the video, Mr. Jabbar said that in his 10 years in the armed forces, he had worked as a human resources specialist and an information technology specialist.

(2,739 posts)That's interesting and weird, that'd he would do something like this. Mental illness seems likely if this is the case.

(34,215 posts)Pretty sure they were divorced because I found a 1997 marriage for his mother. I haven't found a marriage or divorce certificate for his parents, but I'm looking.
His maternal grandmother was from Landry, Louisiana
One of his siblings lived in Shreveport.
Anyway, he had a connection to Louisiana.

(34,215 posts)For instance: Omar Sharif[a] (Arabic: عمر الشريف Egyptian Arabic pronunciation:], born Michel Yusef Dimitri Chalhoub10 April 1932 10 July 2015) was an Egyptian actor, generally regarded as one of his country's greatest male film stars.[6][7][8]
He was born and raised a Christian. His parents were from Lebanon. Michel Chalhoub is a very Christian name. He changed his name because his acting brought shame to his parents.

(132,092 posts)Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...that ANYONE who would do such a thing is mentally ill.

(3,749 posts)That's kind of the Republicans line. Not accusing you of that. That everything is related to mental health when somebody does something bad.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...harming others (when not in self-defense) is not within the abilities of psychologically healthy people, it's actually instinctual to pull back from physically hurting people. It is unnatural in humans to hurt others of our species outside of psychological breakdowns caused by fear or anger, or other mental health issues.
Yes, I know it's a common occurence, but so are a lot of other mental health issues these days.

(37,516 posts)Genocide was that not uncommon when you put a lot of tribes in one area with fairly limited resources--losing a 'war' would require that you try to reclaim you tribe's place, that is, restart the war, and both sides know that the option is genocide or eternal bouts of war, barring some method of conflict resolution.
Pick any violent inner city gang or cartel in Mexico or Colombia. It becomes circular saying that these guys kill because they're psychologically unwell when the main evidence they're unwell is that they kill.
In some places, conflict resolution could include having a tribe or clan, to preserve its existence, forfeit a member: death if male, marriage if female.
Eye-for-an-eye or killings for honor are not been that uncommon. Infanticide was a thing. Hear about the place in SW England with signs of a fairly large cannibalism event? Evidence these were men, women, and children that succumbed to cold or something; they met with violent deaths.
Duels were not necessarily between men who were mentally ill.
This is not true for some cultures, but for others that dehumanize those not in their group?

(22,456 posts)Pointing out that large groups of people throughout history lacked a level of psychological health doesn't equate to a lack of psychological health being a prime state.

(22,456 posts)Nevermind, neither people who hurt others by taking advantage of their delusions, nor people who suffer from delusions, are mentally healthy people.

(491 posts)killing for his perceived cause. I have no idea how to fight this sort of thing except through culture. This sort of thing exists in all cultures and across all types of people and demographics. Truly sad. I agree with others who have simply called it evil.

(8,425 posts)to mental illness, especially if it turns out others were involved, but as I'd written earlier and numerous times before,
hate based rhetoric, demagoguery, and ideology PREY upon the minds of the mentally/psychologically challenged and the easily (willfully) MISLED.

(22,456 posts)...this kind of thing could be considered mentally healthy.
B.See
(8,425 posts)the distinction ( or question) I'm raising is whether the so-called 'radicalization' of someone into support of ANY extremist cause or ideology constitutes (technically) a mental illness.
Because if so, then there are far more mentally ill among us than we may be willing to acknowledge.
