I'm not a big football fan, but did want to watch today's Sugar Bowl in the aftermath of the New Orleans tragedy.
But to sign up with ESPN to watch, will have to pay $60.99 for one month.
Screw that. What a ripoff. No doubt republicon "morals" and "values" are behind this royal screwjob to Americans.

(931 posts)same deal. Priced themselves outside normal people taking thier family.
I rmember my Dad taking me to watch the Cubs at Wrigley Field in the 1970's. Was $1.50 for a bleacher seat. Those days are long gone.

We were warned that everything would go ala carte. Want NASCAR? get the motorsports channel. Like football? You can buy a monthly subscription of NFL and MLB for all the games coast to coast. Fox or MSNBC? That's on the news channel with CSPAN.
Back when Net Neutrality was shot down the telemarketers rejoiced, with one CEO in particular stating that "It'll work out fine if no one gets greedy".
I'll never forget that line.

(1,797 posts)But it's also still not the result of net neutrality. It's that they know people will pay for sports.

(54,407 posts)Before this reply of mine, your mention of 'online' is the only one in the thread, the wording 'streaming' did not appear at all, and the word 'internet' only appears in a reply after after mine.

(41,631 posts)We don't pay extra for Faux, and we can't cancel it either. Well I supposed we can, but it's a big hassle. It really bothers me that part of my monthly Verizon payment supports Faux Noise!
When people say they're "cutting the cord" it means they've completely dumped cable TV altogether. The old familiar cable box goes away, and from then on, it's all internet channels and subscriptions. I haven't done that, so my channels are selected by Verizon.
My son and daughter-in-law cut their (Warner) cable in New York City a few years ago. They now get a lot of free channels from the internet and I think they pay for a subscription to Netflix only. It's definitely cheaper for them.

(41,631 posts)Luckily my regular Verizon Fios carries ESPN for no extra charge. But I wouldn't pony up for it either, if I didn't already get it. I pay them enough each month. Don't get me wrong, I love watching Notre Dame football games! But I have limits, and that's one of them.

(76,700 posts)Not sure that ESPN2 or ESPNews is, though. That might be an enhanced tier.
We get a much of different sports channels. Probably 12.
But, we're in a very high tier for movies & other premium stuff.
I've never itemized to see how much everything beyond ESPN costs.

Cancelled many of my subscriptions and now if I want to read have to resubscribe.
Use ROKU and Sling without much live stuff.
We once had free television and news. We had the adverts and complained, but it was all free.
Newspaper subscription was cheap and we read the newspaper.
Capitalism thrives filling voids. Cable TV brought us sports, MTV, and a thousand channels. Our common viewing shrank and our connections to each other did as well.
We've searched for connections and so many have flocked to authoritarian guidance.
The Church had serious control until Martin Luther.
The Second Ecumenical Council ended RC dominance.
Now our connection to each other is money.
Pretty sad.
