Cutting ties with your republican friends and family

For the past 40 years, Democrats have bent over backward to work within the system, seeking collaboration, compromise, and even friendship with Republicans. Despite political differences, they’ve treated them as colleagues and peers. Meanwhile, Republicans have spent decades demonizing Democrats, weaponizing the media to paint us as enemies, and refusing to compromise on anything. Their tactics have only grown more hostile and vindictive over time.

Now, Democrats are done playing nice. We’re disengaging, cutting ties, and refusing to entertain their toxic behavior—and suddenly, we’re the ones being called unreasonable or childish? That’s laughable. Republicans have built their entire playbook on name-calling, bullying, and divisive antics, like Senator Fischer’s husband refusing to shake Vice President Harris’s hand. Yet when we decide not to tolerate their hate, the outrage machine kicks in, with people like Bill Maher clutching their pearls.

Let’s be clear: there’s a difference between stepping away from racist, sexist, and hateful people and the deliberate cruelty Republicans have shown us for years. We’re not being childish—we’re drawing a line, and they don’t like it. Tough.

I cannot refute something that I have not seen nor heard before. They were targeted. I was not -- at least not with that targeted information. I can't get to common ground with that scenario.

Having quick access to the full text or video gives me a chance. DU does a good job of finding some of it. One trouble here is that it gets posted inside a thread that either drops or suspiciously disappears behind a sudden surge in postings.

Mostly, my Republican friends are not very into politics like I am - so they don’t even bring politics up.

dramas at the drop of a hat. The screen door repair guy at the hardware store just now for example. If he's not on something, he should see a doctor. As my sweet funny WWII vet grandad used to say, "relax. a guy died once."

I try to leave space for redemption and realize how hard that is to accomplish.

A long time ago I came across a nurse who let me know she thought it was a good thing that President Kennedy was killed. Horrifying. This was in the 80's. I had never come across a person like this.

It is hard to change the minds of people who grew up with hatred. It's going to be harder I imagine. No reason to give up now, or ever, in my view. We are all so much greater than hate- all of us.

I sadly think that Trump is going to do or act on something that really going to force people to reveal - just what side are you on. Trump will push things just too far, it’s what he has always done and will do. He will break the social contract between the nation and its people.

I know not everyone around here is into Astrology... and I'm a complete amateur... but I've been told by those I respect that the alignments now are tracking with what they were back in the days of the start of the civil war. Also, during WWII (although I'm less certain of that).

I'm so with you. I've got one brother who, I have no doubt, is a trumper -- simply because he has never trusted a democrat. He's a one issue voter - no one is going to take away his guns (sigh). After several blowups and blowouts over years, even long prior to trump, I made it a point to never talk anything slightly political in his presence. If he starts, I walk away. I do the same thing when he starts the cat barbcue jokes, or other comments about my babies. How we ever came out brother and sister, I'll never understand. We're not even the flip sides of the same coin, we're so different!

But like you, I want to see some fight from our democratic leaders. They want our support... they certainly want our money... it's about time for them to really get down and dirty and start fighting for us, our country, and our democracy. I was so embarrassed that not one democrat (or anyone else) raised a protest at trump certification.

"Betrayal" and "Despair". The first being the one that hurts the worst. As much I liked Harris, I did notice that all the attention and news was on the stars or VIP people who would appear with her. Harris' plans and policies got totally drowned out by the typical female crap such as what clothes she was wearing, and also by the Magas deriding the star power she had. It also made more than a few of us feel left out because of our no-money, no-power situation. We were just lucky enough that those stars usually were saying what we would have said. Still... I have to wonder how much of that played into her fragile loss. I swear, this country will never vote a woman into office unless she's a Reagan/Thatcher Republican-Libertarian.

Most of us live in third world status in this first world country. It goes downhill from here. That's truly scary, because you then get into talking about countries like those on the African and Middle Eastern continents. I didn't serve my country to be treated like this, or see my fellow citizens treated as bad and worse. Despite the Maladministration, I will still practice kindness to those around me, and who are even more vulnerable than I am.

Tue Jan 7, 2025, 03:35 PM

The Republican voters are the ones responsible for this mess, starting with Reagan voters in 1980.

There is no such thing as a "good person who happened to vote for Trump." If they voted for Trump, they are evil, period. And toxic to anyone around them.

Cut off all contact with these people, even if they are immediate family or longtime friends. Don't explain why. Just block all channels of communication, lock that door and throw away the key.

You will find that your life improves without those toxic people in it. If you continue to allow them even one inch into your life, they will continue to poison you through that inch.

No communication whatsoever.
