For the past 40 years, Democrats have bent over backward to work within the system, seeking collaboration, compromise, and even friendship with Republicans. Despite political differences, theyve treated them as colleagues and peers. Meanwhile, Republicans have spent decades demonizing Democrats, weaponizing the media to paint us as enemies, and refusing to compromise on anything. Their tactics have only grown more hostile and vindictive over time.
Now, Democrats are done playing nice. Were disengaging, cutting ties, and refusing to entertain their toxic behaviorand suddenly, were the ones being called unreasonable or childish? Thats laughable. Republicans have built their entire playbook on name-calling, bullying, and divisive antics, like Senator Fischers husband refusing to shake Vice President Harriss hand. Yet when we decide not to tolerate their hate, the outrage machine kicks in, with people like Bill Maher clutching their pearls.
Lets be clear: theres a difference between stepping away from racist, sexist, and hateful people and the deliberate cruelty Republicans have shown us for years. Were not being childishwere drawing a line, and they dont like it. Tough.

It's no longer up to me, it's no longer up to Shitstain supporters among my family and friends, it's up to the guy they voted for.
And I"m reasonably certain that it won't take long.

(13,890 posts)I cannot refute something that I have not seen nor heard before. They were targeted. I was not -- at least not with that targeted information. I can't get to common ground with that scenario.
Having quick access to the full text or video gives me a chance. DU does a good job of finding some of it. One trouble here is that it gets posted inside a thread that either drops or suspiciously disappears behind a sudden surge in postings.

Not all of them.
This hard-core divisionism between we Americans is just another thing that makes Putin's superiority-complex smile.
If Dems would spend money to post the extra content needed to refute RW lies, we'd be winning. Instead, they leave us hanging out to dry for days until someone else looks it up, finds it, and says: Hey, here's the whole story.

I feel as I get older, I need all the friends I can have as some have moved away or died.
One friend was putting down Bernie and I told him about all the good things Bernie is for - the guy is quiet and then days to me - So Bernie is your Rand Paul. He told me he enjoys talking to me.
Mostly, my Republican friends are not very into politics like I am - so they dont even bring politics up.

There is literally nothing the cult wont turn into a RW rant.
Nothing.
Im so sick of it. My trans cousin was deliberately misgendered and dead-named the entire day at Thanksgiving by the Trumpers and (rightfully) will never return to another family gathering.
Those folks scolding the rest of us irritate the shit out of me. Im not confrontational, the Trumpers are spoiling for it though

I try to leave space for redemption and realize how hard that is to accomplish.
A long time ago I came across a nurse who let me know she thought it was a good thing that President Kennedy was killed. Horrifying. This was in the 80's. I had never come across a person like this.
It is hard to change the minds of people who grew up with hatred. It's going to be harder I imagine. No reason to give up now, or ever, in my view. We are all so much greater than hate- all of us.

Just before Ft. Sumter.
I sadly think that Trump is going to do or act on something that really going to force people to reveal - just what side are you on. Trump will push things just too far, its what he has always done and will do. He will break the social contract between the nation and its people.

(7,790 posts)social contract. They've been actively working on it since at least the days of FDR.
I know not everyone around here is into Astrology... and I'm a complete amateur... but I've been told by those I respect that the alignments now are tracking with what they were back in the days of the start of the civil war. Also, during WWII (although I'm less certain of that).
What do they say? History doesn't repeat, but it sure rhymes a lot of the time!

(31 posts)Our father died about 2 years ago and we'd grown closer over it but somehow she became a Trump supporter and I cannot stand her. I told her not to bring up politics because we're polar opposites. But she kept doing it so I no longer speak with her. She used to be normal and I considered her smart. I think she was indoctrinated alongside her husband during the pandemic when she was isolated inside her house.
it's seriously bad when they refuse to respect your wishes
it is sickening, the damage Trump's penchant for hatred and fear and ignorance has done to America

(9,212 posts)So I consider myself fortunate there. I would like to see d leaders start fighting, I don't see it very much at all≥
I'm so with you. I've got one brother who, I have no doubt, is a trumper -- simply because he has never trusted a democrat. He's a one issue voter - no one is going to take away his guns (sigh). After several blowups and blowouts over years, even long prior to trump, I made it a point to never talk anything slightly political in his presence. If he starts, I walk away. I do the same thing when he starts the cat barbcue jokes, or other comments about my babies. How we ever came out brother and sister, I'll never understand. We're not even the flip sides of the same coin, we're so different!
But like you, I want to see some fight from our democratic leaders. They want our support... they certainly want our money... it's about time for them to really get down and dirty and start fighting for us, our country, and our democracy. I was so embarrassed that not one democrat (or anyone else) raised a protest at trump certification.

I wonder if d leaders know that their non actions and capitulation bring a sense of betrayal and despair. I stopped donating a long time ago. Never again.

(7,790 posts)"Betrayal" and "Despair". The first being the one that hurts the worst. As much I liked Harris, I did notice that all the attention and news was on the stars or VIP people who would appear with her. Harris' plans and policies got totally drowned out by the typical female crap such as what clothes she was wearing, and also by the Magas deriding the star power she had. It also made more than a few of us feel left out because of our no-money, no-power situation. We were just lucky enough that those stars usually were saying what we would have said. Still... I have to wonder how much of that played into her fragile loss. I swear, this country will never vote a woman into office unless she's a Reagan/Thatcher Republican-Libertarian.
Most of us live in third world status in this first world country. It goes downhill from here. That's truly scary, because you then get into talking about countries like those on the African and Middle Eastern continents. I didn't serve my country to be treated like this, or see my fellow citizens treated as bad and worse. Despite the Maladministration, I will still practice kindness to those around me, and who are even more vulnerable than I am.

(9,535 posts)I can't be "friends" with a MAGAt. They actively support harm to people I love. Fuck 'em.
We (my wife and I) don;t maintain close ties with MAGAt family memebers EXCEPT her Mom. Her Mom is 93 and needs some assistance and she feels an obligation. Her insane super-right-wing brother is basically a non-functional person and can't/won't help her. A right-ish wing cousin is helping insofar as he can.
The rest? Fuck 'em. I can't play nice with people who actively are supporting suppressing my daughters' rights.

(22,151 posts)and I realize I cannot talk to her again. I am too polite for the sake of "family." I end up seething that she can accept this disgusting piece of crap. I always knew she could be thoughtless but now I see she is cruel. She knows my position but does not respect it. That is their theme.
Checking out at the grocery store, it was obvious the checker was upset. She finally revealed that a MAGA had been through her line and bellowed his love for the dumpster and how awful President Biden is. No respect for the fact she may have a different opinion and knowing that she could not just walk away.
How to confront this - because these people are crazy - do we just put up with it? I say no.

(2,301 posts)The Republican voters are the ones responsible for this mess, starting with Reagan voters in 1980.
There is no such thing as a "good person who happened to vote for Trump." If they voted for Trump, they are evil, period. And toxic to anyone around them.
Cut off all contact with these people, even if they are immediate family or longtime friends. Don't explain why. Just block all channels of communication, lock that door and throw away the key.
You will find that your life improves without those toxic people in it. If you continue to allow them even one inch into your life, they will continue to poison you through that inch.
No communication whatsoever.

(13,735 posts)they eagerly turn an amicable conversation into a political debate. My response is usually along the lines of "you will not get a response from me regarding politics." They often do the broken record routine of repeating what they said in the first place. Sometimes I ask the about their relationship with Jesus or if they believe in Zeus.
