I try to remind myself that President Carter was 100 years old and that he would have been glad to see Rosalyn again in heaven. But the tears still come for a generous, kind man and he left us at a point when we face the swearing in of a grotesque, vile human being as POTUS. The contrast could not be greater.

(68,471 posts)he was in the Navy and headed for Guantanemo for duty when, on home for Christmas in Wisconsin, encountered a bad snowstorm, resulting in months of recovery, mostly physical therapy. That cut short his Navy service. His father had served in the occupation of Japan after WW2 so he wanted to serve in the Navy.

(58,034 posts)documentary "The First Rock & Roll President". I remember how America was back then. GOPer, John Wayne, spoke at Carter's inauguration ball and the Republicans pushed the Panama Canal turnover. It brought back how far ahead Carter was. It reminded me of the chance we had last November and how low the US has come.
So, I cried for Jimmy Carter and I cried for my lost country.

(68,471 posts)I had an uncle back in Texas when I was growing up who had been a state senator and was a local judge. He took me to Sunday School (Presbyterian) when I visited every summer. It was all the religion I got because my parents were put off by Billy Graham and all the Southern church folk at the time.

Not sure why they chose the Navy Hymn. Maybe because we were in a Great Lakes port city. We sang it often enough that I still remember all the words of the first 2 verses.
My father was a Navy vet from WWII. One of my brothers was a career Navy man. The other brother served one enlistment in the Navy.

(16,534 posts)We have Navy in the family all the way back to the Revolution. Both of my brothers served in the Navy; one did three tours in Viet Nam, the other traveled the world and retired two weeks before 9-11 and later blew all our minds when he voted for trump. I suspect there will be many more tears, given Carter's passing and trump's second coming.

I got to vote at 18 because of the Vietnam war.
There was a large push for "if I'm old enough to die for the country, I'm old enough to vote.
Edit -They changed the law in 1971.

May God bless and keep President Carter, an accomplished Naval man and a first-rate chief of state.

(17,609 posts)and was at home because President Kennedy had been shot. As they carried his coffin up the steps of the US Capital (the place SO defiled by the in-coming regime!) - the US NAVY band (President Kennedy was in the Navy too) played 'The Navy Hymn.'
I'd never heard it referred to as 'the NAVY hymn' - but was blown away by the beauty of the band playing it.
I watched the video recording - and the tears flowed - just as they did in 1963.
A marvelous tribute to a great man - and GREAT AMERICAN..................
