This afternoon, Donald Trump blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom for the wildfires that have devastated parts of Southern California.
In a new Truth Social post, Trump called Gavin Newsom, Gavin "Newscum" and proceeded to rail against Newsom for refusing to sign a water restoration declaration that Trump claims would have ensured that there would be sufficient water to fight the fires. There is no evidence that this is true.
Trump continued to say that the ultimate price is being paid because of the "incompetent governor" saying that "he is the blame for this." Despite Trump's incendiary remarks, there is no evidence to suggest that Governor Newsom could have done anything to prevent the fires, and certainly, there is no evidence that Newsom caused the tragic fires. If you recall, Trump previously claimed that he would withhold wildfire aid to California over objections he had with Governor Newsom's policies.
This Truth Social post has become just one in a line of many statements made by Trump during a natural disaster that attacks a political opponent. Most recently, Trump attacked the Biden-Harris Administration and Democratic officials over the response to Hurricane Helene flood in North and South Carolina. Just months later, Trump is continuing this trend, this time taking aim at Governor Gavin Newsom.

(12,756 posts)Is saying that Newsome's forest management service wouldn't let fallen debris be cleared because it was to protect some endangered fish, and that's why the fires have been so deadly. Apparently this is a well-known problem with the Newsome administration. Is this true, or just more MAGAt bullshit?

(31,980 posts)This fire in Pacific Palisades started in the backyard of a home there. TBD what exactly happened.
As for raking the forest floor... yes, clearing the underbrush would be a good thing, but given the number of acres in total in California that are at extreme risk of burning, the fact that most of these forested acres are very difficult to reach, it would cost an unbelievable amount of money to clear it all, and it would need to be done every year.
PGE was to do it under their overhead power lines ( a much smaller forest area by at least 3 to 4 orders of magnitude ) and yet they have consistently failed over the years to clear the forest floor, citing cost as a factor. They even have already made forest roads under their power lines and trained and equipped crews.
There is a lot of back and forth about removing the under brush between environmentalists and forest managers. Some say that clearing brush is ultimately bad for forest management as such debris allows for a habitat of the bugs that are needed to reduce fallen trees into top soil to replenish the forest and assure the growth of new trees. Some say that by preventing forest fires for years, we have inadvertently created conditions for much worse fires when they do arrive ( as they must ).
My feeling is that people should not live in the wild forests of the west or at least if they live there they must be prepared to lose their homes every 20 to 50 years... more frequently in the age of climate change. Much that the fools in the gulf states and on the shores of the east coast must be prepared to lose their homes to Hurricanes and rising ocean waters. Again, more frequently now in the new Epoch of the planet.
The insurance industry will enforce my "feeling" by simply not insuring homes in those areas anymore, thus putting them out of the reach of most people that must have insurance to get a mortgage. We taxpayers should no longer pay to rebuild in these uninhabitable places anymore.
But, of course, even I want a place in the mountains in a forest for my retirement... and I doubt I will be able to pay cash for it. But I do love the sound of a nearby stream and the smell of pine trees. Oh well.

(26,613 posts)They odd belief water from Northern California isn't routed South, reservoirs were empty, a fish story which isn't involved in this region, and the old rake the leaves from first term. On their own, they are moronic. Mashed together in an mad libs rant, it is fucking sad. People, and James Woods, are losing everything including their lives and because it is California, MSM allows GOP to play the blame game. We have become a sad sick nation. The type of place that would elect a sick person like Trump.
