...but an attempt to send a message to Trump.

(2,933 posts)Jimmy Carter, and many other officeholders, even those we didnt agree with, had qualities that were commonplace and have been replaced with evil.

(40,707 posts)We used to hold those at the top, those in positions of authority & power to a higher standard. Oh sure, we weren't always successful, but we still held to the ideal of holding presidents, CEOs, doctors, judges, law enforcement to a higher standard of conduct. IDK when it changed. The pardoning of Nixon? But the social contract is broken. Now those at the top, those with power & money & influence, get all kinds of slack cut for them while those at the bottom are held to a higher standard.
To those who much has been given, much will be asked. Ha ha. The new reality is, to those who much has been given, even more will be given.

(3,169 posts)...longer any consequences for crime. And here I'm not talking about the acts of minor street thugs, I'm speaking of our highest leadership and authority figures. No matter what they are caught doing, the consequences for their actions seldom if ever arrive. The case of Nixon is an important one, but at least Nixon was eventually forced to resign. Later bad actors, like the "October Surprise", Iraqgate, and Iran-Contra conspirators (pretty much all the same people), were never disciplined for what were enormous crimes. And think of all the other scandals which were never even properly investigated, or even worse--the investigators themselves were persecuted. (Two good examples are the cases of Iran-Contra reporter Gary Webb and that of Hazel O'Leary, who declassified records about Department of Energy radiation experiments on humans).

(3,740 posts)power is there specifically for him to abuse. For him, the whole point of being president is to see how much HE can get out of it. Service? Bah, thats for losers, hes literally been quoted saying that about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

(4,827 posts)brought up Carters character, honesty, compassion, selflessness, great love for his life partner, his family, his faith, the simplicity of his post-politics life, and his devotion to work for the betterment of all people until he couldnt.
Several of them also noted that he accomplished a huge amount while he was president- contrary to the myth that he didnt, most of which is still being felt today in terms of making the world a better place.
And Trump scowled thru every one.
