add a s to stores when talking about them. For example Krogers, Meijers, Trentwoods & Savelands. It's something we do and some folks don't know and think they should insult me. DU seems to be really changing and not in a good way.

(7,014 posts)call them Arbys and McDonalds. Different geographic areas have a local way of talking. I have never been called on it either.

(81,266 posts)I think it sounds weird to drop the S on the names of stores.
A friend from out of state laughs at me when I call Chipotle Chipoltes.
Yes I agree, people are arguing about minor issues.
I think some people are on their last nerve about the election.

(6,640 posts)There's a lot of overlap between Michigan and Ohio in speech. The "s" thing, the "pop" thing, etc. Kroger even sells shirts here that say "Krogers."
I'm goin' to the Krogers in Cincinnatuh for some pop would be a perfectly acceptable thing to say here.

(1,243 posts)When I first started on DU I noticed that when anyone said "I pray to God...." Or "Thank God" then some kind of self-appointed content police would come along and make snarky comments about religion. Heaven forbid if you say something that is perceived as sexist or anti LGBTQIA, or anti Israel, and don't forget the Bernie Bros and all of those fights!
There are always those who have a single issue who will bash you and your opinion if it differs from theirs. Just take it with a grain of salt. Keep on posting. Remember, this is one of few social media type sites where there is truth and knowledge. Also, remember that we are Democrats who will discuss and argue about everything on our way to consensus!

(79,052 posts)I think it is the nature of internet forums. There are some rude drivers on the information highway. Even here, on this site, there are lots of people who dislike me -- though not nearly as many who know me in person and can't stand me -- and I frequently agree with many of them. But not all.
Luckily, none of those stores you mention are found in the region where I live. But every so often, some kind friend will contact me to say that I have made a spelling error. This, despite the fact that I am Irish by nature, and exercise the right to spell any and all words however the mood strikes me. (Or on how much strong hashish I have smoked or ingested.) There are even people who go so far as to disagree with me on certain issues, and that's not exclusive to here on DU.
In order to survive the next four years -- if extinction is not our fate -- we have to be strong. That includes ignoring those who take cheap shots ...... and by definition, those who attempt to make an issue out of your spelling are taking shots so cheap that they have been reduced to half-price.
Thus, I will share an ancient Irish tradition for handling such things. It has two options. The first is to simply ignore those who aim to insult you for your spelling. The second has two things that you can pick from: the first is to think, "Go shit in mar-a-lago," and the other is to think, "What an empty life without meaningful meaning!" ...... but to then simply ignore them.

(26,955 posts)Odds are youve probably heard someone tack on an s to the end of store names before (or maybe you grew up doing it) but have you ever wondered why?
Online, there seems to be confusion over who does it. According to various Reddit threads, the linguistic phenomenon is either something southerners do, something Midwesterners do or something older people do.
Nobody is immune from doing it, either. Back in 2021, Pres. Joe Biden was praised (or roasted) for calling the Midwest supermarket chain Meijer Meijers.
One reason is that early stores were possessive forms of people's last names, and if there wasn't an apostrophe, people would add one ,as in "Woolworth's".
People love to make grammar correctness their whole personality, which is extremely boring.
