This is the only question I have ever found to change an anti-choice person's mind.

This is a true story of the now- ancient local public health nurse who used to regularly see women come into her office in sepsis and on the brink of death with lots of little kids trailing along.(Both abortion and birth control were illegal. She was talking about the 50’s and 60’s.)

The only argument that pierced the veil was asking is it right or wrong to leave those little babies without a mother from death by sepsis?

To explain to them that we already know what happens when an abortion is illegal; that like abolition of liquor did not end drinking alcohol, making abortion illegal does not end abortion, it ends safe legal abortion. It puts women in danger of their lives and it was not unusual for them to die, leaving their children without a mother. We already know what happens when it’s illegal. We already tried that! It definitely did not work and that is why conservatives worked to help planned parenthood, including George HW Bush help people get birth control.

It is somehow very easy to judge women but only to ask about the children’s welfare and not hers seems to allow people to think this through and consider that what they think they know may not be true.

It’s not like I’m out there having conversations with these people on the regular. We were stuck in a waiting room together, this stranger and I, and she brought it up.

There’s an interesting thread on this over at https://www.democraticunderground.com/113816411

I am old enough to remember all the years of publishing and media coverage of "why" abortion was very much indicated for various reasons that were critical to the lives and safety of the women involved. The media was compelling no matter what else you may have thought.

In those years, we knew WHY abortion was needed in the life of the mother more compelling than any other issue. How can the safety of the potential mother losing her life for such action? I would hope the overall media would start showing some of those "oldies but goodies". If they have all been destroyed, some older people can remember this period.

They would just shrug them off and say the children must pay for the mother's sins.

These people are absolutely incapable of compassion for anyone else. They are extreme ideologues who believe anyone who suffers is being punished by God so it's their own fault. Now if THEY suffer - they're being attacked by Satan. But everyone else is just a sinner who had it coming.

Even if you can get through to somebody who isn't as extreme as that - the people about to be in power over all our lives are impervious.

. . . the mother died because that was god's will.

They are not responsible for a single thing . . . it is all controlled by god, thus, they have no responsibility for anything.

It's the spearpoint in the denial of modern science based medicine to all people if they finally get their theocracy.

Women are the current targets, but the rest of us are not far behind and it behooves us to support the fight for women's health.
