Wondering what other members plans are to stay mentally, physically and emotionally healthy during Trumps second term?
The only thing we know for certain is that every day he's president is going to be pure chaos. We all experienced his first term which was an endless barrage of scary headlines, threatening tweets, incompetence and unnecessary stress. Every crisis requiring presidential leadership is going to be made a hundred times worse by Trump and his corrupt and unqualified administration. And the media is going to continue to sanewash his daily delusional rants because it's good for ratings.
Personally my goal is to avoid the sound of Trumps voice and boycott 24 hour news networks. I may end up deleting my social media accounts if they turn into nothing but reaction posts to Trumps latest trolling.
It's definitely not going to be easy. And the hardest part is going to be to contain my anger at the 77 million Americans who voted to return this demented clown and his circus to the White House.

(8,808 posts)Tomorrow the 16th will mark the 1st anniversary of my quadruple bypass surgery. Had a heart attack on January 13th last year. Was admitted to the hospital. Angiogram/CT the next day. Surgery two days after that.
October November December of this year was just too mentally, emotionally taxing. Affecting me physically, too. I've done too much health work in the last year to give in to a civil society that rests on its laurels and allowed this fucker the presidency twice.
I'll follow Mexico's politics. There is real hope and progress there. There isn't a whole wing of political power over there looking to fuck over half the population. Mexico politics may be corrupt, but the racist/hate element is in decline there. Not on the rise like here. I'll concentrate on maintaining a motive of calm and safety.

(5,328 posts)I basically just read headlines, and if something looks like it will set me off my anxiety and depression buttons I avoid it. I come here less but when I do I try to look for threads on Democrat Representatives who are still fighting the good fight. I also try and keep an eye out for any big news that I should stay aware of and the fun threads in the lounge.
Mainly I try to stay busy around the house, play with my dog, read, watch programs that have nothing to do with politics, and play internet games. I also have had so many family members, friends, doctors, and therapists reminding me that worrying won't make anything better, and that there is nothing I can do right now to prevent the shit show, anyway, and my falling apart would only make it all even worse. So even though I have a lot of fears about these next four years I am trying not to sink into total despair. So far I am holding it together, but time will tell.

(3,483 posts)Enjoying watching Trump fail.
The lawsuits that hobble his fascist agenda, the defection of Congressional Republicans not willing to sign on to Trumps insanity, campaign promises broken, and Trump voters buyers remorse as the nation turns against Trump, realizing their mistake, his falling approval rating, Americans desperately counting the days until Trump is gone.

(20,757 posts)So maybe it's not fair of me to comment. I'll keep doing everything I currently do to keep sane in a world in which I am fast becoming a relic because I refuse to be chained to a tiny computer that keeps me at everyone's beck and call.
I'll rise early, summer and winter. Take my dog to the beach, catch up with dog-loving friends. I'll garden, build things, draw and paint things, cook for myself and a friend round the corner cos he's too thin!
Whether anyone pays attention or not, I'll refuse to march to anyone's drum, but make sure I'm on top of my messages and emails - ONLY if they are important.
And every single day, make sure I spend time on DU; check my friends here, add what little I can to the conversation and hopefully try to keep some spirits up in what is going to be a fraught four years.

(23,622 posts)I used to watch cable news regularly. I'd have it on all day in the background while working. Since the election, I haven't watched cable news at all. Instead I've just been getting news from DU. Today I watched the Hegseth hearings, and it occurred to me that I don't miss cable news at all, because it's not really news, it's just 24 hours of mostly useless opinions.
When I was watching the Hegseth hearing today, I was watching live news as it happened. I didn't need a cable news host and eight talking heads in boxes explaining to me what I was seeing, or what the ramifications were, or how this was going to be great for Democrats, or bad for Democrats, or whatever.
It occurred to me that this is how I used to consume the news back in the day. I'd read the paper in the morning, read DU during the day to find out what was going on at that moment, and then maybe consume an hour of opinion in the evening, perhaps followed by the Daily Show. I think that's partly because cable news actually used to be more diverse in terms of the political leanings of their hosts, so I could tune out when there was stuff on that I didn't want to watch. (It's crazy to think that MSNBC's evening lineup used to be Tucker Carlson followed by Chris Matthews followed by Keith Olbermann). Ultimately, back then I wasn't mainlining hours and hours of "political strategists" just endlessly talking and ultimately delivering very little.
So I think my new regime is to consume more direct news, and less cable news talking head opinion. I think it's working for me so far...
Abolishinist
(2,953 posts)Prior to the election, I was a regular viewer of CNN and MSNBC. I tuned in frequently, drawn to their coverage of the political landscape and the promise of informed analysis. However, in the aftermath of the election, Ive come to realize that much of their programming consists of talking heads who seem more focused on fostering an informal back-and-forth rather than engaging in meaningful debate or thoughtful examination of critical issues.
This realization has been disheartening, as it seems weve entered a new era where logic and reason are increasingly devalued in favor of sensationalism and entertainment. The media, instead of challenging ideas or fostering a deeper understanding, often prioritizes soundbites and performative discussions. This shift reflects a broader trend in public discourse, where emotional appeals and polarized rhetoric overshadow evidence-based arguments and nuanced dialogue.

(7,398 posts)New free and social media free has helped a lot. I don't really consider DU social media.
Also, unfortunately the matriarch of the MAGA wing of the family passed away and they've all frittered off. I am saved of having to deal with THAT mess and managed to keep the part of her brood that have some sense.
My friendships got a little rearrangement during the first term. Where I live he has a good measure of support, but most have the good sense to shut up about it. Hopefully that continues.

(25,389 posts)There is absolutely nothing I can do about this situation except vote (assuming I get the opportunity again) and support causes I believe in.
I have to conform to reality, and that reality is that citizens like me are powerless against billionaires and corporations and corrupt government officials.
Therefore, I try not to worry about what will come. If the worst happens I will deal with it the best I can. Worrying merely increases the damage to myself.

(313 posts)I keep struggling with it. I'm glad I'm retired, because I don't think I could get up and go to work every day under Dictator Trump. I couldn't work as a teacher, I know that, because I'd be attacking Trump and MAGA every damn minute.
Sometimes I think of Anne Frank and John McCain and the untold numbers who have faced far worse than even Trump and managed to keep their sanity and even to see the good in the midst of the cruelty and the evil.
Joy has been sucked out of everything. All that I believed in, like you, has been crushed. I've always been a fan of quotes, and the one Abraham Lincoln kept on his desk in the Oval Office is one I often share with those going through tough times: "And this, too, shall pass." That's the best I can come up with. But if that helped Lincoln through his many personal travails and the angst of the first Civil War, it should be good enough even now. At least, I hope so.

(4,466 posts)time in his gardens. Our plan is to basically ignore the goings on in DC for the next 4 years. We have no control over what DC will do so there is no reason or need to stress over it. Hopefully the Democrats can get their act together in time to win the mid terms and in 2028. But with the recent changes to social media I'm not too hopeful. Too many stupid people in this country who believe everything they read and see on places like X and TikTok.
