Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you suppose Trump wants Greenland to use as
a detention facility for illegals? Think about it, where are they going to put 11M detainees?
He said it's for "national security," and they've always maintained the border issue is an issue of national security....

(9,214 posts)And they probably got him to go along by saying if he had Canada and Greenland, he could be the boss of an area as big a Putin has. Since Trump is an uneducated fool, he took one look at the misrepresented size of those two parcels on a map, and had a happy attack.

(4,131 posts)The US is currently locked in a three-cornered fight with China as well as Russia over the Arctic regions natural resources such as lithium, cobalt and graphite, according to the Wilson Center, a foreign policy-focused think tank in Washington.
There are two main reasons [to annex Greenland]. The first is the large deposits of rare earth elements needed for critical defense and electronics manufacturing,

(8,887 posts)With global warming, those resources will be far more accessible. Greenland is the prize and Traitor believes it would be easy to seize.

(151,532 posts)1. There are no existing facility for such detention.
2. We don't have Greenland.
3. If we got Greenland, it would take a lot of time and money to build the facilities needed.
4. It's freaking cold in Greenland, and there's ice everywhere. All year.
5. Transporting building materials, etc. would cost a fortune. There's nothing in Greenland to build it with.
5. The cost of transporting thousands of detainees would be prohibitive.
6. The cost of supplying a facility that could house them would also be horribly expensive.
Impractical. I would take at least 2 years to even be ready for detainees, if we even had Greenland.

(7,299 posts)but that doesn't seem to be detering them from going ahead with their plans....
I know the actual reason is, as has been stated above, for the mineral resources, but the detention thought occurred to me this morning, so I thought I'd throw it out. The fact that it's horribly cold might actually work to discourage others from trying to enter illegally.

(18,690 posts)Greenland and particular areas of Canada is that they could be privately developed into safe cities where the very wealthy believe they can avoid the worst consequences of global warming. At the very least, Trump can emulate Putin's enormous underground bunkers where he, his family, Russian leadership and his oligarchs could theoretically ride out a nuclear war.
Some of the Silicon Valley billionaires have already begun to think in these terms. Trump's hostile relationship with California makes it difficult (but not impossible) for him to do something there. Texas or other states could be more likely. It's just so much easier to undertake major construction projects in the wilds of Canada or Greenland than in California.
I do think Trump wants what Himmler called Lebensraum, but not for all Americans--just for the elite, wealthiest, mostly-white men of status.

Bullying our way to a treaty for exclusive access to certain resources.
