The problems with Trump's plan for 'special envoys' to Hollywood

The closer one looks at Trump’s plan to deploy Mel Gibson, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone as his “eyes and ears” in Hollywood, the more peculiar it appears.

Alas, this was not the Republican’s focus. The Associated Press reported:

Donald Trump wants to make Hollywood ‘bigger, better and stronger’ and has cast Mel Gibson, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone as stars of what he is calling his ‘Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California.’ On Wednesday, the President-elect announced on his social media site that the three actors would be his eyes and ears to the moviemaking town.

The closer one looked at the president-elect’s online message, the more peculiar it appeared.

For example, Trump claimed that the actors will serve as “Special Envoys.” As he really ought to know, that’s an odd title given the circumstances. I realize that Trump has an odd knack for concocting new job titles for his friends — see Ric Grenell’s, Mark Burnett’s and Massad Boulos’ official positions — but as The Washington Post recently noted, “Typically special envoys are appointed to countries where there are conflicts or no diplomatic relations, such as Iran.”

There is no precedent in the American tradition of a White House having a “special envoy” to a neighborhood in the United States.

What’s more, it’s not altogether clear whether the president-elect chose the ideal representatives. As a New York magazine report noted, Gibson “was virtually shut out in Hollywood for making racist and antisemitic comments. Though he’s working again, he remains incredibly controversial. After losing his home in the Los Angeles wildfires last week, he spread conspiracy theories on Fox News and ‘The Joe Rogan Experience,’ suggesting that people may have been ‘commissioned’ to start the devastating fires.”....

So to review, the incoming president wants three older actors with limited influence to serve as his representatives in Hollywood. At some point, according to the sketchy plan, they’ll think up some ideas, at which point the White House — which has effectively no authority over the entertainment industry — will ensure that the trio’s recommendations “get done,” which is expected to usher in a “Golden Age.”

It’s the kind of well-thought-out plan that’s come to define Trump’s approach to problem-solving.

That knows the world from what he reads on Twitter and sees on FOX is in tune with the pulse of money making Hollywood. For instance, Woke doesnt makenl you broke, it makes you $$$.

The two movies best getting rears in seats the last two years were Barbie 2023, Inside Out 2 2025.

You don't hear Trump telling Hollywood to make more movies like those . . . LOL.

In Hollywood to make sure NOTHING is said by Actors/Actresses negatively about DICKtator Donnie or he will threaten to ruin their careers. Robert DeNiro and others will not be bullied.

Gibson and Voight may be Oscar winners, but their influence has wanted a lot. So has Rocky's.

Trump wants a small group of informers to rat out their fellow actors and Hollywood-related business associates. Any trashing of Trump or his twisted policies will be reported: The Eyes and Ears of the Emperor.

Just apart from the fact that those three guys are fascist knuckleheads (Stallone is an ambulatory lump of meat, Voight is a washed-up right-wing loon, and Gibson is a raving anti-Semite), why does he need them at all? What are they supposed to do? Maybe make sure there are no more woke movies starring Black actors? Kick all the Jewish people out of show business (Hahahaha!)?

Sounds like they're going to revisit the Hollywood blacklist. Going after filmmakers who are not sufficiently MAGA. Good thing that David Lynch checked out when he did.

or a decade where in the big studios made epic movies in which classical Greece, Rome and Egypt cost millions then (gawd knows how much today) in wide screen and brilliant color. I loved those at the theater and still do on the TV box.

I was fond of one not quite so expensive but a nice film and enjoyable one about an archaeologist (classical Egypt).

Then I learned about Robert Taylor, the star, and his politics and his lack of honor and his ratting testimony to HUAC and Joe McCarthy. So fuck that guy....

and fuck the movie.

Are we really going to subject ourselves to that stupid shit again?

Of everyone "disloyal" to the new regime, everyone who has too much "woke" ideology in their filmmaking and every studio that has too much "DEI"...

And at some point after that, in a totally unrelated news story, some major studio will announce this grand, billion dollar movie project of Donnie's ghostwritten autobiography and just like that, Donnie and his cultists won't be mad at "woke Hollywood" any more...
