There are more people in this march than the people who were planning to attend tfg's event on Monday. These protesters are not afraid of the cold

(25,001 posts)and is larger than the number that would have attended the inauguration. MSNBC is downplaying it by saying that it is much smaller than the one in 2017, and bemoaning the fact that no celebrities are involved. And while I definitely think celebrities and politicians should be there, I am glad that the people are there.

(25,001 posts)There doesn't appear to have been a lot of publicity but I was happy to see a good sized crowd. I think politicians and celebrities staying away could have contributed to the lack of coverage.

(362 posts)....in the DMV. I went in 2017 but my legs hurt so badly for days afterward that I could hardly walk. I was afraid that at the age of 77 I would be in worse shape today. In 2017 if I recall there were 500,000 people there and no arrests (of course, we're not republicons).

(22,616 posts)There were marches scheduled all around the country today; I wonder what those crowds were like. There was at least one that I could have gone to, but I just can't hack being outside in the cold that long (it's a lot colder here than in DC today). When I was younger, I could have handled it, but not now.

(23,696 posts)to create tunnels. We were also unable to march in the morning due to the Stock Show Parade, which is the largest parade in the US with nothing motorized in it. All horseback or in buggies pulled by horses. Our step off was at 5:45
We were unable to get a permit because of the unholy cleanup involved after a couple hundred horses have passed through; without a permit we had to stick to the sidewalks.
It was not well publicized.

(1,138 posts)It looked like this March was bigger than trumps first inauguration! They say it only take 3.5 percent of the people to halt an authoritarian regime and eventually get rid of them. Thats why the young people are staying off, meta, X, Instagram and any other platform these people operate. I wish the young luck and a lot of courage.

(26,891 posts)I've been to a lot of Marches & Rallies in DC. This is a good size one. 👍
Some say they aren't effective now, but I think if "nothing else" they give hope, and energy for us to see each other I think that's a powerful thing on a subtle level for the longer haul.
We believe in these things, we want them (depending) to stay, or become reality our country.

(31,311 posts)thank you for sharing.
I was there in 2017 and actually hoped this march would be even bigger, but clearly it was not. I had plans to be marching in LA with some of the same people (my son and granddaughter) who were with me then, but then LA burned up and it was canceled there. I rescheduled my trip for a week later and spent the day preparing to get on a plane in about 6 hours, plus I never found anyone to go with me, so I didn't go to Raleigh today.
I was asked on a substack what I thought we should do to be The Opposition to this incoming horror show, and I said, "I'm old school. I think we should take to the streets and stay on the streets."
and I do.

(12,189 posts)People. All over America. Getting off their couches and coming to Washington D.C. in the winter to protest their many grievances. If I was able, would have been right there with them. Last time I was there was Jan 18, 2003 protesting the commencement of GW's war against Iraq. I encourage everyone, if you have never marched in the streets of D.C., or anywhere, now is the time. What with asshole in the W.H. There has never been a time more serious than now to get in the fucking streets all over this country like they did yesterday.
I salute all of you who march!

https://truthout.org/articles/over-700-protests-are-reportedly-planned-nationwide-for-trumps-inauguration-day/
In a written statement, organizers from Peoples Forum said that on Inauguration Day, people from across New York City will come together in Washington Square Park to demand a future that centers the needs of the people over the interests of the wealthy elite. With voices raised for workers rights, immigrant rights, and environmental justice, we will call for an end to the genocide in Gaza, the U.S. war machine, and the rule of billionaires......
The protest is scheduled to take place at the citys Torch of Friendship at 6:30 p.m. ET and has been in the works for weeks. Medina said the protest aims to deliver a resounding rebuke to the Trump administrations anticipated agenda.
