(25,968 posts)things that needed repairs, sewing-wise. I was so fascinated w/ her sewing machine, I have it now, won't get rid of it, it means too much for me, memory wise. I should give this to my sister and her family, so it won't get discarded when I eventually pass. But, these machines are not exactly million-dollar collectibles. I'll ask her first, maybe some of her younger grandkids might want (it was her grandma too).
Love going down memory lane. Thanks for posting, U-hermit!

(4,156 posts)I grew up working in a huge tuxedo rental company in the sixties. Our tailoring department had several vintage machines. They were workhorses that just kept going year after year

(4,156 posts)We had sixty thousand tuxedos and rented them in fourteen states. I learned to work my butt off at an early age. I also learned to appreciate fine tailoring.

(25,968 posts)now), actually on Washington Avenue, a fairly large street in downtown STLMO, loaded w/ tailor shops, etc. It's not as busy now as it used to be, I guess w/ so many places allowing casual wear instead of business suits for employees who worked downtown.

(8,800 posts)whether it was abandoned by an "Okie" family heading to California. And I wonder how they coped. with the loss of a working vehicle, and how they fared after that. I've just finished reading two novels about that westward migration, so I know what they encountered in California: more capitalism set among fruit orchards and cotton fields, just like the capitalism that foreclosed on their farms in the dust bowl.
