Costco's unionized workers vote to authorize nationwide strike

https://abcnews.go.com/US/costcos-unionized-workers-vote-authorize-nationwide-strike/story?id=117875222

Teamsters union members working at Costco Wholesale locations across the country voted to authorize a strike on Sunday, with more than 85% of members in favor of hitting the picket lines.

The union represents more than 18,000 Costco employees nationally.

"Our members have spoken loud and clear -- Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they'll be held accountable," Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien said in a press release Sunday.

"From day one, we've told Costco that our members won't work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement. Costco's greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing. If they refuse, they'll have no one to blame but themselves when our members go on strike."

The union says "fair wages and benefits" are the catalyst for the strike.

According to the union, the wholesale giant recently reported $254 billion in annual revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits, which marked a 135% increase since 2018.

Costco has about 250,000 employees in the US, 18,000 are Teamsters. In my book, the teamsters suck. their President is a fraud and they had the chance to support Democrats who support them, yet they did not. Why should we support them? They are fairly well compensated, at the top of their industry, and have a very high rate of healthcare coverage, and again, the Teamsters..... why should we honor the picket line when they do not honor democracy. I have never crossed a picket line in my life, and don't plan to now, but my appreciation for this union seems to be one way.

How about support workers by supporting unions. How about giving their members a chance to vote him out in the next election.

Unions are democratic they have elections and vote for members to lead them, but their contracts set industry standards, so to raise most non-union wages. Without unions, people went to work fell in a meat grinder and company owners told the family the guy came in drunk and left with a women, paid workers a pittance, and no benefits.

Unions are growing because history tells us with a large majority of unions THE COUNTRY prospers.

Do Teamsters have their own president? And did the Teamsters president go out of his way to withhold his endorsement of the first female Black presidential nominee of a major party? Maybe Sean O'Brien should ask his pal Trump to walk a picket line the way Joe Biden did for the UAW

He tried a strategy and he choose wrong. How he did not see that coming, is negligible. To blame all the Teamsters is to blame all the Mexicans, or the white woman or black men, or the Democratic voters that didn't do enough or young and the old.

Unions are not perfect but without them, there would be a lot more suffering...if that's what you wish for because some members are not smart enough to understand what a Union is, you might be like some of the public that could careless.

I will support unions and call out the leaders, but the members will get their vote for change and Sean's plan will hopefully bring results for the union and all workers. If not, he fails and a new leader with better plans and alliances will emerge. Hopefully it is a leader that understands, fascists never supported unions.

Better pay and benefits than Sam's Club or Walmart. More opportunities too. And they also didn't use underhanded methods to crush unions like Amazon did. So they are getting rewarded for doing better by their employees with a strike. Unfortunate, but I will always support workers trying to get a bigger share of the wealth that their labor produces.
