Trump says 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico to begin Feb.1st.

All those people who said they were concerned with inflation just got screwed. Trump just raised the price by 25% for everything you buy from Mexico and Canada including tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers, auto parts, medications, cars, beer and more! Enjoy MAGA!

Americans will have to pay 25% more for those goods or try to source them elsewhere.

Canada is the #1 importer of US goods - about 20% of US exports (among top 30 countries)
They're going to react which will reduce sales of those goods ... which means layoffs.

Who wins? The countries who supply goods they otherwise wouldn't.
US, Canada & Mexico lose as that money goes elsewhere in the world to those other countries.

It will damage a good economy that Biden passed on.

Ask the people in the Rust belt how that worked out for them.
Factories moved to other countries along with the 30% of innovation that comes from the shop floor.
The other countries learned about the design and manufacture of the products and competitors spring up.

Back to tariffs: If implemented, all US products have to pay 25% more for the imported goods from Canada & New Mexico or source them elsewhere. Presumably, they're getting them from Canada & Mexico because that is the best quality, price, landed cost (less shipping costs) and shorter lead times, etc. They might find a better price but quality, lead time for delivery, shipping costs, etc have costs too.
There will be major supply chain problems - some won't be able to deliver product.
As their costs go up substantially so their prices must follow. American companies won't be able to export as much because their product prices are that much less competitive. => layoffs
But if they locate outside the US, they will bypass a substantial cost increase. => more layoffs
US imports and exports shrink and the economy gets weaker - strengthening all the other countries.

Trump is nearly as dumb as his supporters.

Anyone with SiriusXM may want to listen to either the CBC or Canada Talks this morning. I know this will dominate conversation. These are sizable tariffs. Their purpose is unclear, especially with respect to Canada. Canada is likely to respond in kind. Not sure what Mexico will do. The results will be impactful for all three countries.

While there are import tariffs, there are also export tariffs. Canada exports quite a fair bit of oil and other petroleum products to the USA. It would be a shame if export taxes were applied.

I expect some kind of tariff in range of 10 to 25 % on Canada in a month or two or three. Trump said:

"I think Feb. 1 … I think we'll do it Feb. 1. On each."

The timeline remains fuzzy: Trump signed an executive order demanding a report by April 1 on the border, migration and fentanyl, which singled out Canada, Mexico and China, but said it could apply to other countries. {CBC News}

Of course, there will be exceptions 'carved out' -- just as in the 45th admin, religious printed materials such as Bibles from China were exempt. 3 ... 2 ... 1... The Trump Bible, printed in china for a tiny fraction of the selling price.

Whoever lines tsf's pockets will get big loopholes -- those who don't can pay the full cost. That's the whole point. It has nothing to do with any balance of trade, only the balance of corruption headed to tsf's pockets.
