Democrats should halt the transition in its tracks.

We already know their plans. Why go along with them?

One Senator can stop anything he wants. Witness how Tuberville stopped the promotion of Generals and hundreds of thousands of military personnel for months, all by himself.

Democrats need to shake themselves out of their shock and oppose these unfit and dangerous nominees of Trump and the Republicans.

...was when the Garland nomination was being held up. The Democrats should have countered by saying they would withhold unanimous consent, which would grind the Senate to a halt, until Garland got a hearing. This isn't quite the "nuclear option" that blowing up the filibuster would be, but it's the strongest leverage the conference had. Even if you're afraid of getting hurt, you sometimes have to fight. It might turn out better than you feared.

8. I think the reason why bringing government to a standstill has never been done by us
Wed Jan 22, 2025, 11:07 AM
Jan 2025

is because we, to our core, want government to work, while the Republicans are willing to stop everything.

I suspect it is because, at heart, Republicans believe as Reagan said that government is the problem. Most Democrats went into government because they believed government could make life better.

In 2016, Obama was President. Shutting down the government would have prevented him from any of the 2016 accomplishments that needed Congress. Not to mention, we would have been blamed and would have had no chance to win 2016. In 2016, most people thought we would win.

Wed Jan 22, 2025, 10:42 AM
Jan 2025

At least some. Those that the leader wants approved for convenience' sake by "unanimous consent." Why? Because if one person says he'll vote "no" then consent isn't unanimous. Holds can be public or secret, which is squirrelly but there you go.

If Hegseth's nomination is up for a vote, then a senatorial hold would require an actual vote. Now, if you have 1,000 nominations to vote on, each vote might well take an hour or more so it's all unanimous consent. Bam. You've just told the leader you, li'l ol' you, will cause the Senate to be tied up for 1000 hours or more. If there's a 40 hour work week, that's 25 weeks. Less of a concern for a single nominee. Esp. one that's certainly *not* going to be approved by unanimous consent.

If a hold is placed on a bill or nominee, then there has to be a cloture vote to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. (Nominee? Not sure. I think it's 51/100 for judicial nominees, don't know if that's for *all* nominees.)

One senator cannot "stop anything he wants." That's a misgeneralization.

Think. Again.

to vote for a white man, while they dismiss very good reasons
not to.

Look at Ted Cruz, such a slimeball in so many ways, won on
the transgender issue.

And of course, nearly all Republicans are horrible slimeballs,
yet they are associated with the white male supremacy
attitude that is embedded in our psyches.

People are raised with this attitude; abused and groomed
to believe it and to hate and fear all non-white males and
women.

It's a very sad way to live, and it will destroy us all without
any worries about breaking the law or not following the
Constitution.
