I'm surprised we don't hear this more.

Besides power failures occurring, Trump is able to turn off the internet as part of his emergency powers. You think he wouldn't do that?

That's apart from who "owns" the data in the cloud -- Apple is (was?) being sued as a class action in CA because people got hacked and so Apple cancelled their Apple IDs. You cannot access your data, and there is no recourse. (Trust me. Too bad my state isn't in the lawsuit.)

I don't buy a lot of canned foods, but I do buy some. I tried to predict which of those might be affected by tariffs and then bought as much as I thought I'd use in the next two plus years, depending on expiration dates.

I already keep lots of lentils, beans, pasta, oats, flour, sugar etc etc on hand. My deep pantry is my basement cold storage room, and I use mason jars (quart or half gallon) to vacuum seal the dry goods. I don't usually buy canned beans, but I do buy lots of different dry beans! I use an instant pot to pressure cook them (most all but white beans take about 35 minutes from dry, unsoaked beans to ready-to-eat).

If you garden, make sure you get your seeds sooner than later. I think a lot of folks are going to try gardening again this year, kind of like 2020.

If you do any sort of canning, make sure you have plenty of new lids. My guess is that folks will try that too.

I just beefed up my supply after the election, anticipating issues of some sort, whether civil unrest, availability of items or skyrocketing prices.

I think in general most folks don’t “prep” extra food. Lack of $, lack of space, lack of knowledge of how to cook basic foods- your choice. I’m sympathetic to all.

But it'll have to be big enough! I use raised beds, and I have room enough for 11 in my fenced garden along with six smaller ones outside of the garden area. The dogs keep the deer away; haven't seen any in my yard for years (whole property is fenced, and the garden has its own deer fence just in case.)

I did add 10 chick last spring, always a hoot to raise them! I went with olive eggers for about half of those 10, and they are the only ones that took a break this winter on egg laying. The other 5 are still laying. Lovely green eggs on the olive eggers but I may not go with them again. I love their fluffy cheeks though.

I've been following this advice for about the last ten years and don't intend to stop now. Healthy, canned foods are available and lose almost none of their original nutrition. Salt free foods are available in cans as well. I keep about three months worth.

I rotate the food, eating the oldest first. I keep about 60 gallons of treated tap water in stackable containers. Haven't had to use the water yet but who knows what might go wrong in the Trump administration.

As they are trying to cram us into increasingly dense (and expensive housing), one thing that people forget is that those of us in apartments simply don't have that storage space. We don't have basements. We don't have deep
freezes. We can't lay in large supplies of food. Many of us in cities get around for the most part without cars, so we can't do things like make Costco runs. We rely on being able to go to the grocery store several times a week to get food.

Whenever I see people who are huge proponents of density, I try to remind them of the restrictions people in dense housing live under.

Why I think Republicans will cut and run is that

Spring to house a small flock of chickens and a good sized chicken yard. I already bought the shed. Also putting in a garden and getting ready to start an indoor green house for greens. I’m clearing out the rest of my forsythia to get the paw paws going and looking for some apple trees. I also ordered a selection of heirloom seeds that come in large sizes so I can grow non-gmo vegetables. We had to have our septic system redone and the guy driving the digger very kindly destroyed our forsythia. I was so glad to get it out of there. I’ve been trying to dig it out for years. They were sorry that it cost us so much for the septic system so they did a couple of little things that helped, like installing the heaters on the water lines and putting in tall access hatches. I’m wanting to get portable solar panels too, the kind that have built in systems for emergencies.

I’ve already been stocking up on food. Toilet paper, masks and other medical supplies.

This kind of preparation has been discussed here for a very long time. I sincerely hope people took it to heart and did it prior to the inauguration, or for really assertive people prior to the election, since another good idea is to curb discretionary spending while Trump is in office. Now we have two contradictory ideas: Go out and buy a lot of stuff/Stop spending money you don't have to spend once Trump is inaugurated.

People have mentioned some other good ideas in this thread to help prepare as well.

People are going to need food no matter what.

Better to get as much as you can now just in case food prices become almost unsustainable.

I realize our circumstances are different and we can't all prepare the same way and to the same extent.

We can still push back against the oligarchy by becoming more frugal regarding the innumerable non-essential items.

Proper prepping takes a little time. We have multiple gardens we grow and store a lot of our own food. Not raising any livestock currently experimenting on using beans as an alternative protein source. Dried last much longer than canned so stocked up on a bunch of different varieties.
Our property is overrun by rabbits so I was thinking of trapping again and either canning or smoking the meat.
Stopped fishing a few years ago to devote more time to our little homestead…that’s another great food source.

ships it back. I assume toilet paper must be from some byproduct of that milling. Never in a million years did I think we would be thinking like survivalists again. Good idea to stock up and plan a garden if you have a place for one.

Good Question: Is most of our toilet paper made in the United States? https://search.app/p4za5hNhsanpxirWA

hell due to the idiot's actions.

Always better to have stuff saved up, and be prepared, just in case, after all, we did have a pandemic that the idiot ignored during his first term, thus causing it to propagate faster across the American landscape when it shouldn't have, 'it'll disappear before you know it', tRUMP said...what an absolute moron.

He is already talking about shutting down the Dept of Ed., probably the Dept of Health too (he hates the likes of Fauci, and those people who made him look like a fool before).

I personally still worry about him sending his thugs against anyone who said anything bad about him, period. Thus, I kind of watch what I say for the most part even here on DU. Scary, isn't it?

UPDATE: actions are already happening...

Rep Lieu: 75% of immigrant farm workers didn't show up yesterday in Bakersfield because of fears of ICE raids
Ted Lieu ‪@tedlieu.bsky.social

Grocery prices will rise due to Republican policies.
“75% of immigrant farm workers didn’t show up yesterday in Bakersfield because of fears of ICE raids under the new presidency.”

Stupid idiot already has increased our grocery prices, now. What other areas are immigrants prevalent? Landscaping, meatpacking, ranchhands, harvesting our crops, etc.

64. I get what you're saying, but prepping is for short term disasters, not years, and that's what this could be.

I'm retired and poor, just getting by on SS and food stamps, living in an old trailer that will be lucky to last a few more years if that. I don't see this going well for me or millions of other Americans.
My European immigrant family came here near 400 years ago before America became a Democratic nation. It's sad to think that I may be of the generation where it all comes to an end.

Canned goods keep for years.

You can buy them in bulk at Costco.

Someone mentioned buying 100-pound bags of beans and rice and store them in metal containers.

I think it's better to do what you can now.

Food will continue to be available at the grocery stores but the prices will likely be much higher.

The shelves might sometimes be less plentiful than what we're used to.

Hey, I'm not trying to run your life.

I'm just offering advice because I care about you (unlike Trump).

67. How many cans of food are needed to last even 1 person for years, how many 100 lb bags of beans or rice?
Wed Jan 22, 2025, 08:25 PM

Honestly, prep is usually intended for a short term disaster of some kind, not for years. That's just the honest truth. This is not going to be a short term disaster for which I am prepared with food and water, solar batteries, a sun oven, propane heaters.

(I have a tat on my right shoulder, a large red V with blood dripping from it with "FREEDOM" over the top and "FOREVER" on the bottom from V for Vendetta. In 20ll I took my 16 year old daughter to the 100,000 person protest in Madison, WI and she was dressed as V and even spoke in the capitol rotunda. I bet most people had no idea there was a girl under that costume.)

we have a supply of dehydrated food bought during the shutdown. I plan to grow herbs and this year to use as seasoning. Also stocking up on dried beans— can make tofu with them. I only drink water, tea and coffee so I’m going to survive. Bought a distiller to making water for my CPAP machine when distilled water was scarce.
our freezer is full so we can shop that…

on my consumption, and stock up on canned goods. Chicken, eggs, fruit and vegetables all in my reading today. It does remind me of 'peak-oil'. Forget what year that was supposed to happen, or if it did. That and the Iranian oil bourse. Funny how the mind re-minds.
