This is where I stand. The 47th President, his power hungry cronies taking positions of authority in his Cabinet and administration, and the majority of Republicans in Congress are a real and active threat to me, my way of life, and all or most of the people I love.
Some people are saying that we should give Trump a chance, that we should "work together" with him because he won the election and he is "everyone's president." This is my response:
I will not forget how badly he and so many others treated former President Barack Obama for 8 years...Lies about his legitimacy and hatred for his principles and his attempts to work within the system.
I will not "work together" to privatize Medicare, cut Social Security and Medicaid.
I will not "work together" to subvert the Constitution by illegitimately pushing unfit Cabinet nominees through on recess appointments without the advice and consent of the Senate.
I will not "work together" to build a wall.
I will not "work together" to persecute Muslims.
I will not "work together" to shut out refugees from other countries.
I will not "work together" to lower taxes on the 1% and increase taxes on the middle class and poor.
I will not "work together" to help Trump use the Presidency to line his pockets and those of his family and cronies.
I will not "work together" to weaken and demolish environmental protection.
I will not "work together" to sell American lands, especially National Parks, to companies which then despoil those lands.
I will not "work together" to enable the killing of whole species of animals just because they are predators, or inconvenient for a few, or because some people want to get their thrills killing them.
I will not "work together" to remove civil rights from anyone.
I will not "work together" to alienate countries that have been our allies for as long as I have been alive.
I will not "work together" to slash funding for education.
I will not "work together" to take basic assistance from people who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.
I will not "work together" to get rid of common sense regulations on guns.
I will not "work together" to eliminate the minimum wage.
I will not "work together" to support so-called "Right To Work" laws, or undermine, weaken or destroy Unions in any way.
I will not "work together" to suppress scientific research, be it on climate change, fracking, or any other issue where a majority of scientists agree that Trump and his supporters are wrong on the facts.
I will not "work together" to criminalize abortion or restrict health care for women.
I will not "work together" to increase the number of nations that have nuclear weapons.
I will not "work together" to put even more "big money" into politics.
I will not "work together" to violate the Geneva Convention.
I will not "work together" to give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party and white supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred.
I will not "work together" to deny health care to people who need it.
I will not "work together" to deny medical coverage to people on the basis of a "pre-existing condition."
I will not "work together" to increase voter suppression.
I will not "work together" to normalize tyranny.
I will not work together to eliminate or reduce ethical oversight at any level of government.
I will not "work together" with anyone who is, or admires, tyrants and dictators.
I will not support anyone that thinks it's OK to put a pipeline to transport oil on Sacred Ground for Native Americans. And, it would run under the Missouri River, which provides drinking water for millions of people. An accident waiting to happen.
I will not "work together" to legitimize racism, sexism, and authoritarianism.
This is my line, and I am drawing it.
I WILL stand for honesty, love, respect for all living beings, and for the beating heart that is the center of Life itself.
I WILL use my voice and my hands, to reach out to the uninformed, and to anyone who will LISTEN:
That "winning", "being great again", "rich" or even "beautiful" is nothing... When others are sacrificed to glorify its existence.

(6,670 posts)What?! Are you insinuating that Chuck Schumer would be complicit in any of those things? Is it meant to be a warning because someone believes that he might be willing to sacrifice his principles?
Please, tell me... what good purpose is being served for anyone insinuates such things? Does anyone truly believe that Schumer wants to privatize Medicare; subvert the constitution; build a wall; persecute Muslims; line Trump's pockets; destroy the environment; sell National parks; eliminate the minimum wage; slash education funding; violate the Geneva Convention, etc etc etc.
It doesn't take a genius to realize how silly that sounds, does it? Better yet, I wonder if anyone realizes how insulting it is? Shitting on our party leaders like this and insinuating that Democrats are incompetent or complicit (or willing to be) does not help anything.
Actually it HURTS Democrats and suppresses the vote for Democrats.
Why would anyone do or say such things about party leadership? Does anyone honestly believe that Schumer does not support voter rights? Is there a genuinely held belief that he needs to be lectured about it, or that he needs to be "warned" and "dissuaded" from doing anything to suppress votes?
Does anyone truly think that Schumer is too crooked (or too gullible, or cowardly) that he would end up being complicit in eliminating the ACA and denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions?
>> He's been making work together noises.
What does this mean? Can you be more specific? Which of these things has Schumer indicated that he's flexible on? What has Schumer said or done that alarms you?
Or could it be, instead, that he's indicated a desire to find common ground and work together on things that everyone can agree on? Explain to me what's wrong or objectionable about anyone wanting to find common ground on ways to improve our nation's safety, health, welfare and happiness.
Schumer's willingness to "work with" Republicans tells me that he will continue to work for the things he values and believes in. What a shame it is that his words and intent is being twisted in mendacious ways just so that cheap pot-shots and backhanded insults can be hurled in his direction.
I think we can do better than needlessly smearing Democratic leadership with some sort of imagined fear that they are willing accomplices to the GOP treachery and evil. I think everyone should try to be better than that.
Attack Republicans, not Democrats. It's not too much to ask, is it?

(6,670 posts)The insinuation is obviously centered on a desire to promote the idea that he is 'too old' and disconnected from prevailing realities, or that his approach is characterized by secrecy, dishonesty, and exclusivity. Furthermore, it implies that his decision-making may diverge from the priorities and principles valued by the broader public.
This disparaging characterization insinuates that he has a preference for opacity over transparency ... and that he has a lack of commitment to accountability. Employing ageist remarks and accusing him of favoring outdated political tactics instead of embracing openness and democracy is not constructive or conducive to meaningful discourse.
It's certainly not the way to get voters to support the Democratic party. I think it's always best to attack Republicans rather than Democrats.
progressoid
(53,179 posts)There are about a half dozen other assumptions you inferred from my brief post that I won't bother with.
To be clear, I too think it's best to attack Republicans. But that doesn't mean we can't also let our own leaders know what we want as well.

(6,670 posts)The message is, however, is easily understood.
>> Schumer plays by the old political rules ... uh-huh. Got it. He's old. An antique. Out of touch. The message is crystal clear. No need to elaborate any further.
>> There are about a half dozen other assumptions you inferred from my brief post that I won't bother with.
Feigning outrage won't work with me. I'm smarter than many people give me credit for. I, too, understand the value of plausible deniability.
>> But that doesn't mean we can't also let our own leaders know what we want as well.
You're going about it all wrong. There is no advantage in falsely portraying our stalwart and experienced and honorable Democratic leadership as being out of touch, too old, corrupt, and a part of the "smoke-filled backroom" self-serving dealings.
I know you're angry. But shitting on the party and denigrating our honorable party leadership is NOT the way to make things better.

(6,670 posts)Do your level best to put Republicans in a negative light and Democrats in a positive light. Follow up by encouraging voters and non-voters to support Democrats. Let people know that there is no "perfect" candidate, but in a two-party system such as our own, only ONE party will win the big prize... and it's incumbent upon mature voters (who live in the real world) to support the candidate that most closely represents their own values. Remind those voters that their fantasy perfect candidate does not exist, and that in spite of promises made by third party candidates who try to appeal to the most naive among us, they have zero chance of winning. Remind them also that if they "want to send a message" then the message should be to the Republicans and that kneecapping and sabotaging Democrats helps no one and is just a form of meaningless (and very selfish and harmful) virtue signaling.
It's all very common-sense stuff. I'm surprised that I need to explain it in such detail... but there you go.
progressoid
(53,179 posts)Put republicans in a negative light. That's easy.
But I'm a mature voter (who lives in the real world) and my candidate, who closely represents my values, didn't win. So I supported the next closest thing. That's common sense. The people looking for a perfect candidate is a rarity. That's common sense.
This is just an small online forum that most of our elected officials aren't even aware exists. They are likely more in-tuned to the wants and desires of, shall we say, a wealthier audience. Regardless, if they do happen to tune in to our little rants and raves it wouldn't hurt to speak one's mind - especially if they are kneecapping and sabotaging my values. That's common sense.
Oopsie Daisy
(6,670 posts)Ohhh... Just as I expected. The anti-Democratic views and overall shitting on Democrats are not really intended to "send a message" our elected officials at all. I appreciate the honesty. In the end, the anti-Democratic views expressed here end up echoing out into the real world, becoming "common wisdom" and an oft-repeated lie that ill-informed voters end up accepting as being "truth" and it causes a great deal of harm... especially considering a complicit media that amplifies all things negative about Democrats and spends an inordinate amount of time trying to sanewash Trump and the GOP.
>> The people looking for a perfect candidate is a rarity.
LOL! Interesting assertion coming from someone who claims to live in the real world.
>> That's common sense.
Well, it's not quite as common as many imagine.
>> They are likely more in-tuned to the wants and desires of, shall we say, a wealthier audience.
Ah yes... yet another smear of Democratic leadership by insinuating that they're corrupt oligarchs. Charming.
Just to be clear. I see, and I understand... and I'm not fooled at all.
progressoid
(53,179 posts)I shall hence forth toe the line.
But I think you have it muddled. The complicit media you talk about (X, Insta, TicTok, NYT, Facebook, Elon Musk, Linkedin, WSJ, Fox News, CNN, Kilmeade, Levin, Hannity, Joe Rogan, Megyn Kelly, WaPo, etc.) don't echo the views here. They drown them out. The right has a well-funded propaganda machine.

(43,307 posts)If you get a lot of FB response (likes/shares) be careful.
It could put you in some kind of "enemy within" category.
Zuckerberg's literally been threatened with jail by the felon, and so he's donated to the felon to offset whatever offense the felon has accused him of. So you never know what lengths MZ might take if he's attacked again -- he might give in to turning over data also.
Not coming from a position of fear, just offering a caution about that platform, and how this mob leader could go after Americans online by setting up "honeypots."
