A friend said she was going to shop there for some art supplies and I seem to recall that it was owned by a right winger. Is this a company to boycott?
Its certainly on our boycott list.
Never been in one; never will

(49,294 posts)to display in the museum? Yes.
The museum opened in 2017and not long after, doubts began to swirl about the authenticity of its Dead Sea Scrolls. Five were confirmed to be fake. And now, reports Michael Greshko for National Geographic, a study commissioned by the museum has reached an even more damning conclusion: [N]one of the textual fragments in the Museum of the Bibles Dead Sea Scroll collection are authentic.

That's enough for me.

(15,107 posts)It's the only hobby place in town, but I have never stepped foot into it. I'll order online if I can't find what I want anywhere else. Whenever anyone gives me directions to a place that's "next to Hobby Lobby," I tell them I have no idea where that is because I don't shop there.

the ones they have at Culver's are probably just as good.

(127,350 posts)They were the defendants in Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby which removed the contraception mandate on employers that was part of the ACA. The owners of Hobby Lobby are Catholics who said that the mandate violated their religious beliefs and that providing birth control went against their Christian faith.

(53,397 posts)to be fair it isn't all that hard for me to not shop there as it isn't my big thing.
I knew it was owned by big time trump supporter. Have not stepped inside hobby lobby for probably 8 or nine years. Quit shopping there when I found out they supported evil orange one.

(1,121 posts)headquartered in Oklahoma City. Green says the company was founded to express their "evangelical Protestant beliefs."
The company is most prominently known for fighting the requirements in the Affordable Care Act to provide contraception and birth control in company-provided health care plans. Hobby Lobby took the issue all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in 2014 that the company, and others like it (i.e. "closely held corporations" ) could refuse to cover birth control in company health plans, based on the owner or owners' religious preferences.
Hobby Lobby has also been criticized for refusal in the past, to carry "Jewish" items, like Hanukkah decorations. The company was also accused of receiving smuggled archeological artifacts from the Middle East, for display in the "Museum of the Bible", which Green and the company also sponsor.
According to Forbes Magazine, Green is also part of network of billionaires who gave Donald Trump $160-million in 2024 for "election integrity."

(34,294 posts)Unfortunately, their stock is better than Michael's.
I hope she can find what she's looking for elsewhere.
Sometimes Walmart will carry some of the stuff....
Art supply stores, of course carry art supplies.
I have had the misfortunate where the only place I could find emergency mosquito netting was Hobby Lobby. (House was being remodeled, with no screens, no AC and our windows were open. It was also winter). I put the netting on curtain rods.
Fabric stores seem to be going out of business. Hobby Lobby is the only place that carries a special water tube that I use for killing weeds. (Although I think I can find it on Amazon now)
Hobby Lobby carries a bunch of useless home decor. I think their floral can be found at Michaels and maybe Walmart.

(53,194 posts)Pretty much EVERYONE is better than Michael's.
Something I've never been able to figure out: The biggest name in leathercrafting is Tandy Leather. They used to run Radio Shack, which was the main place that sold electronic components like resistors and capacitors. Instead of letting Radio Shack turn into a cell phone store, why in heck didn't they merge with Michael's and have leathercraft and electronics be departments in those stores - or create a Michael's-like craft store chain with those two departments in it? I mean, who anticipated the maker movement?

(4,043 posts)It uses the claim to be super religious to try to get out of paying for healthcare for female employees.
It does not pay a living wage to most of its workers. It does not donate back to help homeless, orphans, etc... (You know all that stuff in Matthew 25)
It certainly does not love its neighbor as itself. or any other version of the golden rule.

(6,480 posts)know that much about the store. After about 10 minutes, it became glaringly apparent. Crosses, crucifixes, Bible signage everywhere. Didn't find the assortment/prices for art supplies to be that great, either.

(5,507 posts)Hobby Lobby is concerned about the health of all of its employees, which is why all of Hobby Lobbys full-time employees are offered a generous benefits plan that includes coverage for most contraceptives along with an on-site clinic with no co-pay at company headquarters, medical, dental, prescription drugs, long-term disability, and other benefits.
The Greens, who own Hobby Lobby, would not pay for the following drugs and devices in their employees' health plans:
Plan B and Ella: Two emergency contraceptive pills
ParaGard and Mirena: Two intrauterine devices (IUDs)
Other drugs and devices that could terminate life: The Greens objected to any drugs or devices that could end a life after conception
I shop there once in a while, but no longer

EEOC v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

The lawsuit alleged that Hobby Lobby fired a cashier who used a service dog to assist with her anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Hobby Lobby settled the lawsuit for $50,000.
Hobby Lobby and the importation of ancient artifacts
Hobby Lobby was involved in a case where the government accused the company of importing ancient Iraqi artifacts without the required customs documentation.
Hobby Lobby agreed to forfeit the artifacts and take steps to remedy its unlawful conduct.

In 2011, Hobby Lobby lobbied to push the founders of Feed the Children, a non-profit organization in Oklahoma, out of their own charity. Co-founders Larry and Frances Jones said that the company staged a hostile takeover of the organization. The Joneses sued Hobby Lobby for its actions, but the lawsuit was later dropped. Still, who would try to take over a charity?
