and using a unique name for something when everyone else in the world calls it something else impedes clarity of communication.

This is cynical "keep your head down" bullshit from the AP. Not surprised at all, because it is bad options all around, but this is annoying.

The GOM name change needs to be finalized as there are stakeholders in the US, such as the military, that may determine that it's too costly to change. And Trump said 30 days.

Don't know about Denali. It probably won't cost much to change, but he is going to receive pushback.

They need to wait until all of this is finalized.

In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy.

It says "The Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years. The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen. As a global news agency that disseminates news around the world, the AP must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable to all audiences. "

So it's not "direct[ing] its US subscribers to call the body of water "Gulf of America" ; it's going to use both. It is going to use McKinley.

"The Artist formerly known as Prince," when he chose that unpronounceable symbol for his name;
and the social media platform formerly known as "Twitter," when Musk renamed it "X".

I'm sure there are other examples. Among the purposes of journalism is to communicate clearly, and that applies to geographic locations, too.

These re-namings are "freedom fries" silly.

He'll be demanding history books use BC/AD for dates instead of BCE/CE.
