Donald Trump insisted he was serious in his determination to take over Greenland in a fiery telephone call with Denmarks prime minister, according to senior European officials.
The US president spoke to Mette Frederiksen, the Danish premier, for 45 minutes last week. The White House has not commented on the call but Frederiksen said she had emphasised that the vast Arctic island an autonomous part of the kingdom of Denmark was not for sale, while noting Americas big interest in it.
Five current and former senior European officials briefed on the call said the conversation had gone very badly.
They added that Trump had been aggressive and confrontational following the Danish prime ministers comments that the island was not for sale, despite her offer of more co-operation on military bases and mineral exploitation.
It was horrendous, said one of the people. Another added: He was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious, and potentially very dangerous.

Also, Invading Greenland would be an undeclared war combat action that does not fit the Presidential War Powers Act of 1973.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/50/1541
Regarding "grunts" not knowing the law regarding U.S. involvement in war and hostile military activities, I had in mind that senior officers would refuse orders to invade Greenland.
I would not underestimate the knowledge of "the average grunt" in the military. Basic training includes laws of war.

A U.S. attempt to take Greenland by force would result in the immediate shutdown of trade with the EU as well.
Who wants to bet that he would rename Greenland to Trumpland?

(13,858 posts)It will begin with NATO countries dressing him down for his Greenland fiasco. Then he will find the US not invited to any more economic forums. Then he will find out that none of our {former} allies are willing to share intelligence with us anymore. Of course, the newly minted drunk running the defense department will not understand the significance of that.

other forms of dictatorship... The first stage of ferreting out secret enemies and hunting down former opponents is usually combined with drafting the entire population into another front organization and re-educating old party members for voluntary espionage services... during this stage a neighbor gradually becomes a more dangerous enemy to one who "harbors dangerous thoughts" as the "enemy within" -- than are officially appointed police agents...
the chief difference between a totalitarian and imperialist expansion is that totalitarians recognize no formal difference between a home and a foreign country, with world expansion as their goal... "

(1,439 posts)So if the orange felon sends in the military to try to forcibly take over Greenland, and since Denmark is part of Nato, as we are, at least as of now, does that mean that NATO will have to come in and defend Greenland, and even possibly Denmark, against the US?

(60,386 posts)The founders never envisioned an attack coming from within the alliance, but the charter doesn't exclude it from the realm of possibility either. The "attack on one" clause was never amended to say, "unless the attack comes from within the Alliance membership." Unless there is some similar obscure clause in the NATO charter, if the US military moves to occupy Greenland, every other NATO country is bound to come to the aid of Denmark and Greenland. I'm sure Fox Noise will find a way to justify the attack, but the rest of Europe will fight it, and they might get help from Canada as well.
No wonder Trump wanted Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. Anyone sane would have tried to tell him to forget the notion.
