But yeah, they [/i]voted for this. Whether they sat out the election or voted for Jill Stein etc etc etc. They knew what they were doing. Someone said, "We can handle deportations, but we can't handle genocide in Gaza"....So they chose deportations instead.
Also some of the immigrations rights people pivoted from immigrations rights to Gaza. They ended up voting for Jill Stein or someone else.

(34,847 posts)I saw Muslims on podcasts say, "We can live being deported and with Muslim bans, but we can't live with genocide. So we won't support Biden". (None of them were Palestinian)
Also the immigration rights groups, which tend to focus primarily on Latin American immigrants also switched their gears and went all out for Gaza. They kinda seemed to forget their main focus. I got a notice for someone who was very active in the asylum community ministry saying that he was quitting the party because of "genocide in Gaza".
The other day at the MLK March (before Trump signed his EO) They were all wearing keffiyehs and carried a "Free Palestine" banner. I think the keffiyehs probably came off by Monday night. Most of them in that group are Latino.

(69,590 posts)What's wrong with the ones who didn't see through it? Could it be that they hate Jewish people? They ignore massacres and atrocities all over the world except what Israel does. Posts about other atrocities drop like a rock and I've never heard anybody say that they wouldn't support Democrats because of US aid to Uganda, for instance.
Even here on DU, certain posters ignored all evidence that the Oct 7 attack and ensuing propaganda was planned deliberately to put Trump back in the White House.

(69,590 posts)Obvious propaganda was obvious. Many of us saw through it and tried to warn others. They wouldn't listen.
Too many Americans allowed themselves to be fooled by propaganda that millions of the rest of us saw right through.
Propaganda is not going anywhere, and it will be more sneaky than ever as AI makes it easier to fool people. If we don't start taking life a little more seriously and exert some effort and self-discipline before we fall for every emotionally-laden lie, we're sunk. Literally sunk.

(21,163 posts)His $$$ from the propaganda wasnt played here, but I still fought hard against good friends who, like me, are against Netanyahu, and I went on Republican pages to spread as much truth as possible. We won NH.
Why? People wanted to punish Dems by not voting because Biden thought he could manage the situation.
But people in states where there was incredibly heavy spending, a constant drum beat, and no one was willing to lose friends to fight their need to punish dems?
Folks like us didnt push hard, person to person.
The propaganda won

(93,874 posts)After everything with what you posted suddenly the young people were upset over tiktok ban and they were going to see Trump as a hero. So what the Chinese do to Uighurs was ignored.
The thing about young people seeing Trump as a hero for saving tiktok didn't happen but it was something that was being pushed just like the bs from last year.
As you say it's just about hating one group and people's own egos and them doing drama. I don't think many of these people actually care about others. But it's performative bs.
summer_in_TX
(4,259 posts)Post WWII and during the Cold War, there was school curriculum designed to help students learn about propaganda techniques. In the early to mid sixties, still in elementary school, we learned about "glittering generalities," "the broken record technique," and the "bandwagon effect."
Lots of encouragement and opportunities to read for pleasure. Reading helped us understand the perspectives of others, and was instrumental in developing empathy
Then there was Civics Class that taught not only how our government worked but why it was set up the way it was, with its checks and balances.
As time passed by, the curriculum was messed with. The outsized Texas textbook market was a prime goal for capture. Dumbing down the standards and using ideological content has been underway for awhile now.
Then of course a careful campaign was waged to get rid of the Fairness Doctrine, which allowed the active propaganda of talk radio, FOX News, and the many RW-owned media and social media platforms.
We are the lucky ones in that regard. The RW media turned ordinary people into suspicious, angry people stewing over grievances. I'm grateful for all the things that insulated us against the toxicity.

(4,259 posts)it was a personal interest of my teacher's or the schools. Those were a time when teachers had some ability to innovate content too. This was in Austin, and I think I was probably a 5th grader which may have been 1964 or thereabouts.

(4,259 posts)But as a child I took it for granted. So I never learned how it came to be.
yardwork
(69,590 posts)That would have been in the early 1970s. My English teacher was older and followed an "old-fashioned" curriculum. We learned how to diagram sentences - an invaluable skill that teaches the logic underlying English sentence structure, that I've made good use of in my career. We also read essays on logic and were taught about various fallacies.
I can recognize "straw man" and "no true Scotsman" arguments on DU every day. Humans use these and other fallacies without thinking. Other forms of propaganda are more deliberate.
In 8th grade we were taught from a history textbook that was centered around showing biases and how they were used throughout American history. We studied political cartoons, read essays from the 18th century, and dissected the underlying biases.
This early education served me well. It's all gone now from public education (and certainly from the religious-based charter schools), as far as I can tell. Recent efforts to begin teaching American History based on original documents have been suppressed as "woke."
We're going into a Dark Ages.

(63 posts)"glittering generalities," "the broken record technique," and the "bandwagon effect."
Wow I just had a flashback to my 4th grade class, in the mid 60's, where we had a semester long "Propaganda Unit" in which we learned how advertisers and politicians try to sway and control our actions through images and language. We studied commercials and political speeches to identify the various methods of propaganda used. It has served me well. I haven't heard the phrase "glittering generalitites" in a while, and that's a shame. Breaking down the messaging and understanding what they are trying to do with it is key. Today, people simply swallow it whole.
We were also the generation that read and studied Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, also at fairly young ages, early HS, and discussed them in depth.
The first thing any autocratic movement does is begin to control the language. Trump is stupid but he (and his minions) know that much and they have already begun the "down is up" "war is peace" tango.

(4,259 posts)They believe ad hominem and straw man arguments are valid.
I retired 14 years ago as an elementary special ed teacher of reading and math. One requirement is that each child qualifying for special education services has and IEP, an Individualized Education Plan. We sped teachers built those using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) appropriate to the greatest needs our students had in learning.
For years my go-to for students with reading comprehension issues was for them to be able to figure out character feelings and motivations from their behavior in stories. That was no longer even included in the TEKS at least by my last year of teaching (2010-'11). So yes, dumbing down was occurring in curriculum requirements under Republican control. And they considered social and emotional learning (SEL) to be somehow suspect, instead of designed to build empathy. Texas Republicans even condemned it in at least one of their party platforms.

No. Murder is murder.
Israel's response was huge and relentless and ruthless, too. I understand protesting that.

(29,682 posts)That made absolutely no sense. Netanyahu aside (he doesn't even represent what most Israelis want), divesting from Israeli companies or companies that do business in Israel, which is what a bunch of under informed college students seemed to want, would give us a Middle East with no Israel. That's clearly the end game of the people who staged the protests. It was always clearly the end game.

And, what is really frustrating to me is the level of denial in reality that some of them suffer. They just will not accept the truth of their eyes and ears.

(41,086 posts)Another friend, a Canadian who lives in the states but doesn't follow politics closely, told me her takeaway from the American election was that it was mostly about the trans issue. That people are pissed that women have to compete in sports with transwomen & share locker rooms with them. Also, they're tired of having to be sensitive about pronouns.
I was boggled! This is a good friend of mine!! It took me over a week to craft a response where it didn't sound like I was calling her a moron. So I pointed out that less than 2% of the population identify as trans & that the trans issue is a religious zealot issue so the Trump campaign ran with it & spent 40% of their budget on anti-trans ads the final weeks of their campaign, so if you're tired of hearing about it, look to them. Then I reminded her 50% of the US population are women & we're being denied emergency medical care at ERs & hospitals around the country & that I thought that was a much more urgent issue. OMG, she hadn't heard any of these stories!!
Callie1979

Personally I think the border was a bigger issue but all the disinfo pushed on twitter & TikTok was about UKR taking our money, trump being targeted, the "Biden crime family" all various kinds of lies about pedophiles etc added fuel to the fire.

However, with the UN condemning, Israel three times more than every other country combined when all these human rights abuses and ongoing wars in the Sudan, Syria, Yemen, China, Russia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, etc., moreover after they were attacked and goaded into war, speaks to something very unusual going on in the world messaging department.

(2,677 posts)Of all the excuses for idiots that decided to sit out 2024 the Gaza excuse has to be the dumbest of all. Did they not pay attention to Trumps 1st term? All of his words and actions pointed to him being worse in the region for those in Gaza.

(9,614 posts)Folks I know who did not vote becuase of Gaza now expressing fear or concern. My reply to each of them is "What the fuck did you think was going to happen?"
2 expressed that we live in a red state and so it wouldn;t matter (except our state is now dominated by fascists). 1 thought Harris would win anyway. They can't think beyond their own selfish little noses.
It pisses me off.
And frankly, all the assholes who undermined Biden and Harris for the sake of this issue can fuck off too.
