....let's see if DUers can help turn advocacy against what Trump has done to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts inside of government into activism and action toward the businesses where we would spend our money.

(84 posts)I order many products from Costco online and it is a great service! For our family it is worth the annual fee to be a member.

(319,023 posts)a lot that I'm interested in to buy at Costco.. that doesn't involve Bulk. They also have Produce, a Bakery, and a Meat Dept.
But I get why Costco wouldn't have Items for everyone who don't want to buy the Case Products.
niyad
(132,354 posts)clothing, pet supplies, vitamins, seasonal items. And, if I remember correctly, if you don't have a Costco in your area, in some cases, membership is waived.

(2,937 posts)We used to live in North Florida and there was one in Tallahassee, an hour away. We walked in, circled the store, said Nah, and went home. That is my impression but I can take a look at online.

You may want to join for the online store

(7,786 posts)for "just two old folks?" There are many times I'd like to buy cheaper, but to do that it seems you have to buy in bulk... and I've quickly run out of storage room. Downsizing from a 3800 sq foot house to an 1800 sq ft house was bad enough. But add to that bulk purchases of paper towels, etc., it's hard to find space, without putting them in open space like the living room.
Worse, to me, is the fact that meat packages for just me and hubby are priced astronomically to feed just the two of us. We can't afford the bulk packaging for families, let alone the smaller sizes. And I inherited my "don't waste" gene from my Dad (a Depression era kid). I hate wasting food when there are so many out there in want...
Even restaurants are into the act. Hubby and I don't eat out often, but we do "eat in" with carry out. I've made chinese take out last 3-4 nights worth of supper. Sure, it's a great buy, but I do get tired of eating the same thing every night for nearly a week... but I don't want it to go bad and have to throw it out.
Talk about a consumer society!

(26,885 posts)But paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, wipes..all the stuff ya use n throw away is so $$ so we split it. 12 towels are easier to store than 24 but a lot less expensive than the grocery stores. We'll split stuff like butter that comes in 4 pound packages and other items that come in bulk. My grocery store has BOGO sales so I take advantage of that. Not much on meat but the fruits n veggies are crazy expensive so every little bit helps. Dont eat out much anymore and my kitty is on Rx food from the Vet..she eats better than I do! Beats the Vet bill so I bite that bullet. Didnt get the memo on the real Golden Years being so lean
slightlv
(7,786 posts)The kitties' food bill is as much as ours... probably more, because we'll scrimp and eat basically one meal a day, with toast or something to fill the hole prior to that. The cats? If there's a bit of the bottom of their bowl of crunchies peeking out from around the ring of crunchies surrounding it, they walk into my room, sit, and stare at me until I get up and fill that hole! (LOL) And of course, that's in addition to the Fancy Feast twice a day...

(26,885 posts)After tests and shots, we put her on prescription food, purified water and pills. Shes healthy now..she better be! I understand about the feeding schedule as Im pretty sure my cat can tell time n if Im tardy, she lets me know. Good thing we spoil em, huh 😻

(11,132 posts)I just read an article about how the insurance industry is about to really screw condo owners because they took such a hit from the California fires. Like charging astronomical prices and outright denial. If the owners cannot get insurance in some locations, they cannot live in the condo. It is going to be a huge mess, and it is because of that orange gibbon getting back into office that these leeches are being this bold.

(2,937 posts)I typically nab enough to have for dinner and then lunch the next day. We have found that most of our casserole-type recipes make enough for two full dinners (also chili and soups), so many of our dinners are just the other half of earlier dinners that have been in the freezer. We also cut recipes back by as much as half some of the time to avoid leftovers.
You REALLY downsized! I can relate to the minimal storage space, we are in 1465 sq ft, and some of that is a screen porch! Periodically I have to go through major purges to clear out spacewe have too much stuff! It all gets donated, we have closet shelf space for a while, and then it starts again. I currently have 4 boxes and a garbage bag of donations on the guest bed, waiting till the temps go above freezing to load them and take them.

(2,937 posts)We each grab one of their takeout containers, load it up from the buffet, and they weigh it. You are charged based on the weight (therefore, the amount of food). Extra charge if there is seafood in it. Its a very big restauranttwo 2-sided buffets with entree foods and soups, and one 2-sided with fruits, salad stuff, puddings, and other desserts. And a full sushi case. Lots of small plastic containers stacked on top of one of the buffets for the puddings and so on. No matter what time we go, people are there.

(1,350 posts)Toilet paper for example can be bought in bulk for even one
If you have room.
I actually have a Costco near me and rarely shop inside impart because the bulk thing but also walking around Costco ends up bothering my leg so much it aches afterward
But I do use their gas a lot.
Its funny because its so close I never really think about ordering online and having it delivered. Might do that someday

(17,140 posts)Since the intent is to show businesses that DEI policies are good for the bottom line, it would have been much more effective IMO to have all 100 people buy memberships (if they don't already have one) and show them in the store with full shopping carts.

I was flabbergasted when I heard Target say that they will end their DEI. Why do they have to announce that? That's nothing to be proud of!

(5,902 posts)I shop Costco and Penzey's spices on a regular basis. My wife and I are retired but still find great deals that we can use. Everything isn't 'bulk'. We buy a lot of staple items as well as larger packages of meat/fish/veggies...but usually what we can use in a week or so. We do have a freezer, so some stuff gets vacuum sealed and frozen, but we still save a TON of money on our usual purchases.

(4,165 posts)I'll bet the funeral homes aren't happy about it. In Texas their lobby has led to a lot of legislation that ensures Texans don't have a lot of options for all the elements involved in a funeral. Costco's coffins are bound to bring great savings.
