The other thing that rocked me was the realization that there’s a certain mindset — everywhere, I don’t blame the South — that requires a class of people to be in slavery, and that includes women. when I was a younger adult in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, "tranny" was a term I heard used frequently among my LGBTQ friends. There was no animosity attached to it and it was frequently employed by those who were drag queens, transvestite and transexuals.
