(1,312 posts)no evidence that any of those actions played any role in last night's tragedy.

(2,600 posts)Couldnt believe that he did that. This is so reminiscent of Air Florida Flight 90 in the early 80s. Weirdest day ever in DC (huge snowstorm, plane crash, subway crash). Horrifying.

(172,836 posts)it was just terrible
I was in the middle of the snow storm in downtown DC when Flight 90 crashed. Someone in the office offered to attempt to take us home. It was really rough, but we finally made it - only to find out about the plane crash and the subway crash as well. Someone I knew was on the bridge when the plane crashed in front of him. I flew out of National to Florida a couple of weeks later and was terrified. I will never forget that awful day.

(38,859 posts) Police have pulled multiple bodies from the Potomac of people apparently killed after a plane collided with a military helicopter, according to people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the incident.

(34,852 posts)Both were flying VFR and one flight was running behind schedule. It happened about five miles from the airport. They exploded and no one survived.

The aircraft operating the flight, a Convair CV-580, departed Green Bay at around 10:30 a.m. CDT, proceeding to Oshkosh under visual flight rules (VFR). At 10:36:11 a.m. CDT, the air traffic controller at Oshkosh cleared Flight 290 to land. The flight crew's acknowledgment five seconds later was the last communication with North Central Flight 290.[5][1]
Operated by a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, it departed Chicago at 9:28 a.m. CDT on June 29, 1972, bound for Sheboygan under an instrument flight rules (IFR) plan; en route, the flight crew abandoned its IFR plan and completed the first leg of the flight under VFR.[1]
The plane departed Sheboygan 13 minutes late, at 10:23 a.m. CDT, bound for Appleton, operating under VFR. At about 10:30 a.m. CDT, the flight crew contacted the Air Wisconsin office in Appleton, stating that they anticipated arriving at Appleton at 10:44 a.m. CDT. This was the last communication with Air Wisconsin Flight 671.[1]
The National Transportation Safety Board noted that the North Central crew would have had to look toward the sun to see the approaching Air Wisconsin plane[2][6] and concluded that they took no evasive action

They had some security camera of the jet coming in and a bright flash when the collision happened. I would be surprised if any survivors.

Remember those silly comments he made after that little kid fell in the gorilla exhibit? And then the zoo shot the gorilla?
That's why this reminds me of.
This is so dumb and idiotic. He's commander in chief!
Then he's throwing ATC under the bus...

For many in the DC-area flying community, the crash tonight wasnt a matter of if, but when.
DC airspace is some of the most congested in the world, with helicopters and jets forced into a small operating area.
Doesnt exactly help that the Army uses it as a training ground.
The Potomac VFR is insanely busy with Army helicopters, Park Police, other associated agency helicopters, and DC Police helicopters.
Seen here, a US Army UH-60 flying at low altitude up the Washington Channel, just adjacent to DCA.
