because of the deportations, he said, "One other thing that will increase is jobs." So I asked if he knew anyone who would do those jobs. They're hot and back-breaking and mostly done by Mexicans. And our unemployment rate has been historically low, so it will be harder to fill those jobs. He changed the subject.

One of my first jobs as a teenager was picking, sorting, and packing blueberries for $1.75/hour. That's not as hard as many other agricultural jobs, but it was hard enough!

We are in for a long, hard 4 (or more) years.

if he ever saw any san-o-lets, toilet paper, or washing stations in the fields where he and other workers will be working soon to be picking the fruit and vegetables......

That is why they always tell you to wash the Fruits and Vegetables before eating......EColi is extremely un-forgiving.......

28. Detassling Corn In Illinois

Jan 2025

I did this as a kid, hot nasty work, and you'd come home with your arms and face cut up from the sharp edges of the corn leaves. It paid squat. I suspect that most people have no clue how hard farmwork can be, and yet they complain about the price of produce.

Much produce comes from "blue states," Washington, Oregon, and California in particular.

Experienced farm workers here make closer to $20 an hour. Entry level is $9.

Disruptions in the food supply affect everyone, regardless of how they voted.

Paramilitary raids, mass arrests and indefinite detention, denial of due process, Gestapo tactics and horrific abuses have all been going on for 20+ years.

(I was called away. Here are some more observations.)

States don't vote, people do. Millions of Democratic voters live within the boundaries of "red" states. Even in "red" districts 40-49% of voters can often be Democratic voters.

Many immigrant farm workers here have earned citizenship.(They are under pressure). Many are from Europe. (They are not under pressure.) Many ag workers are white and are US citizens.

Here is how it breaks down in my experience:

Hispanic people are being terrorized, no matter where they work and no matter their status. It has nothing to do with immigration, it is white nationalism.

Workers with language skills, math skills, literacy and familiarity with machinery are not field workers, no matter their status or ethnicity

Workers without language skills, math skills, literacy and familiarity with machinery take field work. At one time that was mostly Dust Bowl refugees (think Grapes of Wrath). Today it is mostly immigrants from the South.

Never mind the horrible unedited AI text and image.

Are we celebrating the fact that corporations use and abuse immigrants for back breaking work?

Should Americans pick crops? Trump says no,

‘Cause no one but an immigrant would stoop so low,

And after all, even in Egypt, the pharaohs,

Had to import. . . .Hebrew braceros.

Have child labor, they see closer to the ground and can pick faster. And then they have prison labor for all the taller produce like oranges snd apples.

Any slack in farm labor will be subsidized by prisons and child labor law removal. They will force the poor and destitute to do their work because they don't want to part with one cent of their wealth. They expect the poor and destitute to do this because why else are they allowed to live?

And, we will let them do it again. 'No such thing as a caste system in the US' my fat old ass...
