My brother in law in Joplin was a salesman for a roofing company . He called this morning and said they might last another month. He is retired now. Oh yes I am Im Kansas and we are past due for some spring storms. Just saying getting a new roof may prove to be hard.

(25,294 posts)I don't know the immigration status of the workers, but none of them spoke English. The only English-speaking person was the foreman, who handled all interactions with me.
They showed up at 6AM and had stripped the roof, replaced the sheathing, re-shingled the entire house, cleaned up the yard, and were out of there by 2PM. They also took a lunch break, which they spent part of playing soccer in my backyard.
There are several roofing companies in my area, and from what I have seen, they are all staffed largely by Spanish-speaking folks.

(24,084 posts)He was a legal immigrant from Mexico. He learned to roof, he moved to Florida in the 1990 or so and started his own roofing company. Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 and he became a millionaire in one year. He was hiring whoever would work for cash under the table.
Roofing is tough work that no one wants to do for a reasonable price.
