I use Hiya to block them and I have noticed a huge increase in calls that cannot be identified. I look up the numbers and they do not come up.
I am really careful putting my real phone out there so I am confused.
Has Eloon been working to get more numbers for his fundraising?

(17,923 posts)Indeed I have. During election season I got next to no spam calls. Find it odd we are getting them all of a sudden since trump got back in office.

(9,214 posts)Not exactly an improvement from all the companies wanting to replace my windows. Pretty sure they get the phone numbers from some land ownership lists, judging from their first question: Is this #### , living at #####? IOW, likely from property tax rolls. There are also a LOT of calls that suggest callers are just using robotic calls dialing numbers in sequence.
The NoCall List is useless, evidently. And I am thinking scammers abound since the Nov 6 election results. Criminals and con men have no fear now.

(510 posts)I started getting them about two weeks or so after my husband passed away in late October. Also mostly untraceable. Some are hang-up calls. I don't respond as a rule to numbers I don't recognize, but in the month or so after he passed I was getting calls that I didn't recognize but were important. After things calmed down I stopped answering calls from numbers I don't know, and they have slowed but not stopped. It is possible the muskrat is behind some of it and some of it is just people looking for a new widow to try to take advantage of.
I too am careful about where and to whom I give my number to, but there are surely ways the scammers and political scum can hack into phone lists. Hard to hide a death, too, since so many people need notification.

(4,704 posts)The few I have answered on a whim have been trying to help me improve my Medicare coverage (don't qualify for another few years).
As for how they may be getting your number: they simply start with an area code (123), followed by whatever is the first three numbers of the phone number, and then start at 1 and have a computer generate the list. Example: (123)456-0001, (123)456-0002, and so on.The callers then start simply dialing numbers. The lists might be split up among a number of callers. Since the list is generated in numerical order, it doesn't matter if your number is listed or unlisted.
