It's 5:00 AM EST on Feb. 1 and I can't seem to get any news about the Trump Tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China.
Does anyone know what's going on?

(2,668 posts)Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said Trump will be implementing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada as well as a 10% duty on China, in retaliation for the illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country.
The White House provided few details on exactly how the levies will be meted out, saying that they will be available for public inspection at some point Saturday.

(2,668 posts)them from causing chaos. After all, Trump and his allies control all the levers of government.
All we can hope for is that the 10%-15% of persuadable voters who determine elections wake up and give us at least the House in two years. until then, we just need to hang on and hope they continue to fuck up.

He has been using the money he makes to rig US and European elections.
China does the same.

(5,890 posts)I don't mind the China tariffs are a tool to get China to play ball, there are big - and increasing problems - with our China trade.
One is that exports to us is one of the things sustaining their economy since their construction / real estate market has derailed. They are also a cold war style enemy at this point - relentlessly stealing information and technology, building their military and using that to pressure neighbors.
The other is that the Chinese government doesn't care at all about the bad actors operating out of their country. Counterfeit goods is a huge problem, and the fakes are flowing out of China. I've heard several horror stories from old coworkers in the past few years about counterfeit networking equipment in US procurement channels. One of them was several million dollars worth of Cisco data center networking hardware. Externally, perfect match for the real thing. Internally and functionally deficient, and likely loaded with malware and backdoors.
This is the kind of thing we should be pressuring them over.

J.D. Vances claim that Biden is targeting MAGA voters with fentanyl
If you wanted to kill a bunch of MAGA voters in the middle of the heartland, how better than to target them and their kids with this deadly fentanyl?
It does look intentional. Its like Joe Biden wants to punish the people who didnt vote for him and opening up the floodgates to the border is one way to do it.

(18,488 posts)first term.
Days before those tariffs went into effect we were able to download hundreds and hundreds of pages of specific, line-by-line items that were under tariff. It was insanely detailed, down to particular dyes and tool parts.
And although most news organizations are reporting the tariffs go into effect today, yesterday there were a couple of headlines claiming he'd moved the date to March 1. Even Reuters (ordinarily dependable) used the March 1 date.
I see articles about the tariffs for sure, but what I don't see are headlines like: TARIFFS GO INTO EFFECT AT MIDNIGHT, or TARIFFS UNDERWAY AS OF MIDNIGHT, etc...

(197 posts)The additional duties. If I remember correctly from the first DT term, it took around 30 days for US Customs to reprogram their software to begin collecting the money.
The govt also gave businesses a chance to send in requests to exempt certain commodities. However who knows what will happen this go around except the cost of goods will go up for the consumers.

(35,399 posts)Retroactively and demand the Tariffs from our customs brokers, who will then pay it, and pass through to us on our weekly bills.
This isn't like the Steel Tariffs (232 Investigation) or 301 (4 lists specific to China). My broker has advised it is across the board all Country of Origin.
It won't impact Chapter 98's (Returns for Warranty, Replacement, Repair).
Anxious as I have several returns in transit - some for rail products and two for industrial plumbing.

(35,399 posts)For the laymen - that is the schedule that is leveraged by CBP to enter imported materials and finished goods into their Automated Customs Entry System (ACE).
Oil and Petroleum Products sit under Chapter 27 in schedule.
There has not been an update to ACE for Country of Origin (COO Canada) Petroleum Products.
The PDF and HTS US Lookup tool will come AFTER ACE.
I'll update when/if ACE is updated.

(2,668 posts)I did not know if they were in force.
As far as me losing, I am retired in the Philippines, so the Tariffs don't mean shit to me, personally. The Tariffs could cause such an economic decline in America that it could rid the world of Trump.
