My dad survived polio. It cost him the use of one of his legs. He used to buy two pairs of shoes, 1 size 10, and 1 size 7.5. He would keep the left and the right of one pair, and donate the other. He said; "there is another polio survivor out there somewhere whose other leg was affected, they could use that other pair".
He told me something profound once that I still remember to this day, despite the fact that he was about the most sarcastic man I've ever known.
He said; "some people with a disability become bitter and cruel and heartless, because they are obsessed with the unfairness of it all. They yearn for people to suffer, and take great joy in the suffering of others. Others dedicate themselves to caring for people, because they would never wish for the suffering of others."
I have NO doubt which category Mitch falls into.

(297,844 posts)MoscowMitch and Gregg Abbott - still bitter
Lots of privileged people feel unfulfilled, unhappy, and depressed and want others to feel the same way. It wasn't enough to own slaves and mistreat them. It was even more important to make sure they didn't laugh and sing through their misery. Some will never learn that money and having it all is not the most important thing to billions of other people. The things that old folks used to say money could not buy still cannot be bought. And that's the rub.

(114,625 posts)I honestly cannot understand how one can survive such a horrendous accident and rather than find any gratitude for those who saved you and for the life you still get to live, no matter how changed from how you expected, you instead use your bitterness to harm others. As a paralyzed man in a wheelchair, does Abbott not think Trump and his ilk STILL think of him as among those "disabled" they want out of government--consider the very epitome' of DEI hires?

(23,752 posts)Forty years ago this week, a 26-year-old law school graduate named Greg Abbott was out jogging on the streets of River Oaks when a tree snapped and fell, paralyzing him from the waist down. Abbott, in the midst of studying for the bar, sued the tree owner and later the tree-trimming company that had neglected the 75-year-old tree. He won a multimillion-dollar settlement, the details of which remained private for years. ($
Decades later, Abbott campaigned in support of tort reform curtailing "frivolous" lawsuits and won. Abbott's critics claimed that he helped usher in a Texas significantly less friendly to plaintiffs seeking damages like the ones Abbott won. Looking back on the case 40 years later, Don Riddle, Abbott's personal injury lawyer at the time, agrees that Texas has changed.

You never know when a tree is going to fall on you
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has received the full amount of the lawsuit settlement from the 1984 accident that put him in a wheelchair $8.9 million.
Abbott, 65, was the states attorney general in 2013 and running for his first term as governor when he decided to voluntarily release copies of the September 1986 agreement to the media. He won a third term as governor in November.
He was 26 at the time of the incident when he went for an afternoon jog on a windy day through River Oaks in Houston. A limb snapped off a large oak tree as he was passing under it, crushing his spine and damaging his kidneys.
Abbott sued the homeowner and tree care company and won a settlement, which shows tax-free annuities in graduated payments. The payments began with a $300,000 check in 1986. They include both monthly payments that will continue for the rest of his life and lump sums that are deposited every three years until the final one last year.

but MOSCOW MITCH is directly, at least in a large part, responsible for this disaster in which we now find ourselves. He had, not one, but two opportunities to remove the orange beast and he loudly refused. I don't know if he's done something recently.

(20,388 posts)Its a straight line from his actions to the constitutional crisis we find ourselves in now. Everything about him should be viewed through that lens.

(2,572 posts)He worked to create extreme partisanship in the Senate; he refused to work with or compromise with Democrats on any legislation. He refused to allow President Obama to place a Supreme Court Justice during his last year of presidency, but allowed Trump to ram through his nomination of Amy Cohen Barrett in his final two months.
This is McConnells legacy. I dont care what he has to say now. He has only himself to blame for the state of our country.

(10,293 posts)Moscow Mitch came off as an angry, bitter, hateful old man whose only legacy will be how badly he screwed over this nation. Nothing matters to him but power. I doubt he'll finish his term.
