Just heard on the top of the hour radio news that Mexico is sending 10,000 troops to secure the border.
That gained a month delay on the tarrifs.

(60,320 posts)Posting OPs and then refusing to engage in discussion is disruptive. Maybe I'm alone in not liking that kind of behaviour. Maybe not.
Between this OP and the next they made a single post elsewhere.
7 hours later after this OP, started another disruptive thread with still no reply as of this writing: https://upload.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=19984700
Three posts in the afternoon, none of them a reply to any discussion in the two OPs.

It is a fact that weapons go across the border to cartels in Mexico from the US and it has been a problem for some time.

(130,533 posts)Mexico agreed to move some troops to the border; it will cost them basically nothing just to relocate some soldiers. But it delayed the tariffs while giving Trump time to save face. Smart negotiating by Sheinbaum.

(2,248 posts)And that's what he'll do. He'll say he leveraged a deal to protect our border.
This isn't going to play out that Trump folded. He's still dangling the tariffs. He got concessions from Mexico, even if they are trivial, and that's how it's going to be presented.
yardwork
(69,364 posts)It's exhausting.
Self Esteem
(2,248 posts)It's about the perception of the narrative. Anyone who has paid attention to Trump for the last eight-plus years knows how he operates. He creates a crisis so he can solve it. That's what he did here. He threw up the threats of tariffs to extract demands, even if superficial, so he can say he "won".
It's not about actual policy with Trump but getting the wins, even if they're only optical wins.
yardwork
(69,364 posts)Trump succeeds with his sleight of hand when Democrats help him spread his lies and misdirection.
Self Esteem
(2,248 posts)Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. But it certainly won't be played as Trump folding. That should be a bigger concern than trying to convince a bunch of people here on DU that Trump somehow folded.
Trump got exactly what he wanted. He created a crisis so he could get minor concessions and play it up as a huge win.

(7,366 posts)Why would you accept any pathetic framing from Trump or anything the old press comes up with.
Self Esteem
(2,248 posts)What you and I accept is also irrelevant. It's what the rest of the country accepts and most people aren't going to look at this as Trump folding. It's not going to be played up as Trump folding in the media. The average voter is going to hear that Mexico agreed to do this or that and that's how he plays the win.
And that's exactly what we're seeing in the media right now. Literally the top headline on CBS News right now:
There's nothing in that headline that implies Trump folded.
It doesn't matter how you or I perceive this. To average people? It's not going to be played up as Trump folding.

(7,366 posts)The task of the Free World is to manage and isolate Trump. They are working on thiss.
We failed to maintain control of our government and lost our democracy. That lesson is being learned by citizens of other countries.
Are you committed to the struggle to regain our democracy or are you going to play the role of some negative Greek Chorus in those ancient dramas ?
Self Esteem
(2,248 posts)We're in this mess because people honestly believe Trump uses abrasive rhetoric to get deals done. This feeds into that narrative: Trump isn't serious but he managed to get concessions from Mexico and Canada! The media will present it as such, the voter will accept it as such and he'll be more emboldened because of it.

(9,996 posts)Trump's spin is irrelevant to the facts. People who understand the truth should be screaming at the top of their lungs that Trump is a lying sack of shit and explain the truth. People scream about the Democrats not fighting back, and then some of these same people then just roll over and accept that Trump has won a dispute because he spins it that way. This needs to stop. Never accept Trump's explanation or spin on anything. Fight back on everything.

(15,399 posts)Mexico can say they sent 10k troops, but who knows if it's 100 at a time, rotating through every three days, or 10k assigned with 1k on duty patrolling at any one time, or whatever?
This isn't like the US, which can and supposedly is using ground sensors and drones as a significant force multiplayer if a nation really wants to secure the border.
In fact, ground sensors and drones are more effective than walls to locate smuggler routes and apprehend undocumented or criminal border crossers with a minimum of fuss to Border Patrol.
Walls just slow them down by 1/2 hour at most. And Walls will become more and more difficult to be maintained properly, especially since this Administration appears to prefer the Russian and Chinese model of contracting and procurement.

(Along major, roadways, at random) I can report they are not the best of trained troops. Sometimes wearing half a uniform or having a weapon with no bullets, seems to be the norm. They will take a cold drink if offered and can be distracted with a joke and a smile. Once they offered to trade for our dog for a pass of no car search. Not impressed with this offer, we made a joke and all was well. Good luck with border help Donnie dumbfuck!

(7,366 posts)Mexico now has cover for amassing its troops on the border to ward off the military invasion Hegseth was threatening.
Mexico has been building up its Army since the threats from Trump started.
Trump has come up not just empty handed but a loser because Scheinbaum has also placed the issue of US border violations on the table for the world to see.
MAGA now gets to ponder the higher food price scenarios and the potential for their children and grandchildren to die along a militarized border.

(5,068 posts)If the goal is really to control folks other than Mexicans, which is as much in Mexico's interest as Trump's, then stopping the walk-ins from Central and South America is a major part of the equation. Last thing Mexico needs is a bunch of folks coming north and then being trapped in their country with no good way to get to the US and no easy way to get home. Trump and his ilk do not note that 40% of the folks that become illegal immigrants were in fact legal visitors when they crossed the border--be they tourists, student, temporary worker or whatever, and then just overstayed their visas. He makes a big show of his round-ups but assuming the 40% figure stays the same, his deportations are doing little to decrease the net 11 million supposed illegal immigrants in the US.

(55,080 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) The Biden administration has struck an agreement with Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala to temporarily surge security forces to their borders in an effort to reduce the tide of migration to the U.S. border.
The agreement comes as the U.S. saw a record number of unaccompanied children attempting to cross the border in March, and the largest number of Border Patrol encounters overall with migrants on the southern border just under 170,000 since March 2001.
According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, Mexico will maintain a deployment of about 10,000 troops, while Guatemala has surged 1,500 police and military personnel to its southern border and Honduras deployed 7,000 police and military to its border to disperse a large contingent of migrants there. Guatemala will also set up 12 checkpoints along the migratory route through the country.
A White House official said Guatemala and Honduras were deploying troops temporarily in response to a large caravan of migrants that was being organized at the end of March.
