I can tell you that I'd MUCH rather face a knife than a gun if I'm unarmed. For someone to cut me he's got to get close. Close, even with a gun, becomes a 50/50 proposition. Still not great odds, but better than someone with a gun and distance on his side. A gun and distance and I'm probably dead. A knife I've got a shot at surviving. And possibly disarming him without ANY loss of life.

The presence of a gun in ANY confrontation means it's already a life threatening self defense situation. The threatened party can't use anything BUT maximum force. It immediately ups the ante to 10.
