What the absolute fuck?! Why are we allowing this? I've used this in the past and it's very helpful.

(43,307 posts)Also the service can be re-installed when enough people start filing for extensions -- because they've lost jobs and gained higher costs of living such that they can't afford to pay taxes.
This, too, will backfire.
More on Free File a widely used and well liked IRS program.

(22,591 posts)Here's an interesting tidbit from that link:
They "just told me they were informed that if they accepted the Fork in the Road deferred resignation, they'd still have to work through May 15th because it's filing season. So Musk lied. And what about filing season 2026? Are they just gonna cross that bridge when they come to it?"
So it sounds like this may be a false alarm, at least where filing taxes for 2024 is concerned?
I swear, the worst thing about this whole Trumpnado that's hit Washington is that it's so hard to get accurate information or know who to believe about anything!

(4,965 posts)ON EDIT: I think there is a difference between Direct File (which was launched as a pilot program in 2024 and reached taxpayers in only twelve states) and other IRS-endorsed Free File electronic services which have been in place for years.
Just a few weeks ago, the IRS announced that it was expanding Direct File so that it would be serving taxpayers in 25 states. Some Republican lawmakers have been critical of Direct File ever since it came into existence in January 2024.

(9,997 posts)Your Tax Filing Could Be Free if Musks DOGE Commission Gets Its Way
What Musks DOGE Commission Is Considering
During a November DOGE meeting, The Washington Post reported that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who has since parted ways with the DOGE efforts, discussed the possibility of creating a mobile app so Americans could file their federal taxes for free. Musk posted on X in November about his desire to simplify the tax code, so this would be a step in that direction.
However, thats easier said than done. The Internal Revenue Code (IRC) consists of more than 4 million words, so creating an app that not only encompasses the entire code but also calculates taxes based on the code is quite an undertaking.
What Are Taxpayers' Options for Tax Preparation?
Currently, taxpayers have three primary ways of filing taxes: do-it-yourself (DIY), using tax software or hiring a CPA.
This story says it would add it existing options, not replace anything,

(4,965 posts)I think the signs and the mules were paid for by undocumented money, probably much of it coming indirectly from Putin.
Low information voters here are predisposed to believing the lies which appeared on T's yard signs. A bandwagon mentality caught on. I think the strategy was a well-planned part of the opposition's late-stage ground game here.

(33,615 posts)... for the IRS is perfectly functional for me.
So, for me, the information shared is inaccurate and needlessly influenced personal anxiety.
If information is inaccurate and shared, it most certainly is misinformation.
If misinformation is shared repeatedly and deliberately, it's disinformation.
I am being accurate and very generous in using the misinformation label in this instance.
Furthermore, I felt obligated to share my alternative experience for the benefit of others.
PS: I am rarely if ever influenced by indiscreet pedantic finger wagging.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)It does not say the facility has been deleted. It says, and the article is also clear, that the *team* was, according to Musk (again, "Musk says..." ) "deleted".
The OP information is not "inaccurate". You're just misreading it. You are not being accurate. And the "pedantic finger wagging" comes from you, so consider if others will be influenced by it, if you're not.

(618 posts)Musk had no right or authority to unilaterally delete an easy and time and money-saving saving option for taxpayers. He obviously wants us to pay big tax preparation firms like H & R Block instead, probably because he has stock in those companies and they employ his rich friends.

(5,829 posts)According to numerous media reports he actually did make that claim but all evidence so far is that the IRS is still processing those returns. The nut is gleefully spewing lies and misinformation about all of our government agencies and their functions to justify and influence Americans to support their efforts to dismantle and defund as much as possible.
