US President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced an interest in buying Greenland, which is rich in gas, oil and rare earths. However, extraction would destroy the island's unique environment. Greenlanders, meanwhile, have become increasingly vocal about their desire for independence from Denmark.

If he attacks an unaligned Greenland, a few dozen thousand Inuit spread out over 1600 miles of a mostly uninhabited independent territory will be in no position to defend themselves. For now, Denmark is content with giving the Greenland Inuit a wide-ranging autonomy. Under Musk, they would be nothing more than a colony.
