US President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced an interest in buying Greenland, which is rich in gas, oil and rare earths. However, extraction would destroy the island's unique environment. Greenlanders, meanwhile, have become increasingly vocal about their desire for independence from Denmark.

BRUSSELS — Denmark’s prime minister insisted on Monday that Greenland is not for sale and called for a robust response from her European Union partners should U.S. President Donald Trump press ahead with his threat to take control of the island.

“I will never support the idea of fighting allies. But of course, if the U.S. puts tough terms on Europe, we need a collective and robust response,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters in Brussels as EU leaders gathered for defense talks ...

NUUK, Greenland — Greenland’s parliament passed a bill Tuesday that bans political parties from receiving contributions “from foreign or anonymous contributors” after President Donald Trump expressed his wish that the United States take over the vast and mineral-rich Arctic island that belongs to Denmark.

The bill is aimed at protecting “Greenland’s political integrity” and will take effect immediately, according to a translation of a parliamentary document in Danish outlining the measure.

The bill “must be seen in light of the geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation where representatives of an allied great power have expressed interest in taking over and controlling Greenland,” the document said ...

7. And that is no trivial distinction

If Trumpusk attacks Greenland now, he attacks Denmark, and the rest of NATO is obligated to defend against the attack. If he attacks an unaligned Greenland, a few dozen thousand Inuit spread out over 1600 miles of a mostly uninhabited independent territory will be in no position to defend themselves. For now, Denmark is content with giving the Greenland Inuit a wide-ranging autonomy. Under Musk, they would be nothing more than a colony.
