President Donald Trump angered some of his Christian supporters on Friday when he named a televangelist who even some conservative evangelicals have labeled a heretic as part of his White House administration.
The president signed an executive order establishing a White House Faith Office and chose Pastor Paula White-Cain, his ally and spiritual advisor, to lead it.
White-Cain, 58, is a megachurch preacher from Florida who has endorsed biblical interpretations that some evangelical Christians believe go too far.
She is a proponent of prosperity theology, which teaches that God rewards the truly faithful with material wealth and personal success.

(20,769 posts)I have read theology and philosophy. I have a better understanding of the history of orthodox religions that most Americans. Given that knowledge, I'm more than entitled to call these 'prosperity Gospel' christians - absolutely fake.

(30,179 posts)Being Christian means following Christs teachings. Jesus is the Christ, according to all Christians. The problem is, Jesus was very clear about who he stood for and how to get to heaven. The prosperity gospel is the absolute opposite of Jesus teachings. The opposite of Christs teachings. They are fake through and through.
Consider the Venn diagram of conservative Christians and white supremacists who call themselves patriots. The overlapping hypocrisy is clear. People can believe whatever they want, but that doesnt make their beliefs true.

There are a lot of denominations and individual congregations trying to live as Jesus instructed them.

No one follows all of Jesus' teachings. Hence, by the definition provided, no one can be a true Christian.

(30,179 posts)he wasnt speaking literally. What hes saying, if you look at the entire passage, is not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Sorry, thats another metaphor and you seem metaphorically-challenged. Let me rephrase: when you catch yourself doing something shitty, stop doing the shitty thing, but keep the good parts of yourself.
Also a bogus argument because no one takes this passage literally, not even biblical literalists and flat earthers. So, what are you babbling about? Meanwhile, he expressly spoke in plain terms about treating the least among us as if they were treating him. Thats the false Christian part, ignoring Jesus message of acceptance and love in favor of their equally stupid interpretations of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) to justify their cruelty.
Im sorry you seem to have been hurt by Christianity. And also, Im an atheist who doesnt think we need to throw the baby out with the bath water because some adherents got the core message wrong.

I'm not hurt by Christianity. I think it is a backward myth, but I am not personally hurt by it.
There sure are a lot of people who have been, are, and will be hurt by religion in all of it's forms, including the religion of the True Scotsman.

(9,996 posts)the teachings of Christ. Those are the people that support Trump. Real Christians are people who actually do follow the teachings of Christ. These people would never support Trump as he is totally antithetical to Christ's teaching and most are extremely angry at the Fake Christians who have co-opted the word.
It not only fair, but at this point rather necessary to make the distinction between the 2 groups. Anybody who lumps them all together is being ignorant of reality.

(20,769 posts)There are still adherent of religion who actively follow the ascribed teaching of Christ.
Then there are those who incrementally alter interpretation of the historical documentation to make it appear to represent the polar opposite.
And I add, I am a person of NO religion. Unfortunately, present times have allowed much bastardized versions of the original 'christan' (christ like) beliefs to take hold as self-serving 'proofs' that they can interpret and carry out abominations and call them 'sanctified' in some way.

(126,150 posts)And lo! one came, and said to him, Good master, what good shall I do, that I have everlasting life?
Which saith to him, What askest thou me of good thing? There is one good God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
He saith to him, Which? And Jesus said, Thou shalt not do manslaying, thou shalt not do adultery, thou shalt not do theft, thou shalt not say false witnessing; worship thy father and thy mother, and, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
The young man saith to him, I have kept all these things from my youth, what yet faileth to me?
Jesus saith to him, If thou wilt be perfect, go, and sell all things that thou hast, and give to poor men, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, and follow me.
And when the young man had heard these words, he went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions.

(20,769 posts)Intellectual honesty. I'm not so sure of several millions of Americans having that same grasp; in fact they seem to enjoy, revel in their own self-proclaimed ignorance while celebrating the fallacy of how educated they are.
I agree, the co-option of moral principles long predates the USA. But not until the 20th century did their teaching diverge absolutely from the traditional teachings of Christ to become a self serving, money making, inarguable truth in their own minds.
In past years, centuries, society itself, having a small conscience, looked down on those who attacked the 'least of us' in society. There is only one half step between kindness and cruelty and that is indifference.

For an academic analysis of Protestantism's ties to/theology of wealth, start with Max Weber's "Protestant Work Ethic."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestant_work_ethic
Personally I think old Max had it backwards. Protestantism is the perfect capitalist religion, because only the wealthy are truly saved and go to the afterlife: a kingdom ruled by a fat, old, bearded white tyrant who once had a thing for betrothed Jewish virgins and perhaps still does. Thus, the religion gives license to all sorts of malfeasance. Society deifies itself.
