That list can go on and on. Poorest, highest crime, shortest lifespans, worst economies, least free, worst education systems, worst health care. The red states are a mess. Democrats have done a poor job pointing this out while Republicans have made sport of hammering California for cost of living and Chicago for crime.

When will Dems start saying, look at Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, and Louisiana for Republican policies do to people? Much of the South is like 3rd world countries, Dems have too much class to point this out, maybe they need to start playing to win.

10. The Democratic party would rather be right and lose

Feb 2025

Than win while playing hard ball.

I've been saying this for decades, we need to show America what it is like to live in a red state. And not just with words, but take cameras. If you've ever driven through the South, you know there are hundreds of places you could stop with cameras rolling and document what it means to live under Republican polcies for millions of Americans.

And there are great places in every state, but my lord, the poverty you see on the side of the road in places like Mississippi and Louisiana is absolutely stunning. There are 2 million Americans without freaking indoor plumbing and almost all of them are in places run by Republicans. These states have large portions of them that look like somethng from the Grapes of Wrath. The hunger and lack of sanitation is striking. The crime is absolutely out of control. the incarceration rates are through the roof and many of these towns have nothing in them save for a giant prison system. The schools are run down and drug use is out of control as is teenaged pregnancy.

This is what republicans want for the whole country. The want to turn the Mid West, the Northwest, and New England into the hellscapes you see in small towns in the South. That's where their policies lead, poverty, crime, suffering, and a hand full of rich oligarchs being the only ones benefitting.

I have been saying this for years also. The repukes never apologize for their hate but let a Dem step up and give it back to them the Dem always end up apologizing. The R's have been running over us so long we are perceived as weak. I watched Cory Booker's speech on the floor when they did the all nighter and he looked like prez potential to me. He was great. Sheldon Whitehouse is great too.

I think right now Chris Murphy and Jamie Raskin are leading the charge, as well.

Richard Blumenthal is doing a good job of communicating, despite being older. Dan Goldman knows his stuff, and is a good explainer.

Elizabeth Warren knows her stuff, but sometimes she tries too hard to reach the "regular folks".

There are others I like, but too often they rely on vitriolic smack downs, rather than the info and facts. A lot of people are unaware of what Musk, DOGE, and the hackers (who are security risks) are doing. I want to see more explaining what is going on w/ Article 1, and the usurping of Congress, and the Impoundment Control Act. The times call for some understanding of Civics.

22. On California
Mon Feb 10, 2025, 03:01 PM
Feb 2025

It's been drilled into Cons' heads like an anvil for 30 years. I have friends and family in California, I absolutely love the state, it's gorgeous, there's everything there you could ever want in 1 state.

When I visit and return, invariably I have some idiot ask me, "so, did you see homeless people everywhere you went?" or, "Boy, that seems risky given the crime." California isn't in the top 15 for crime, it's safer than a lot of red states. And homelessness is a problem everywhere, California is a big state, you won't notice homelessness in the vast majority of areas. Doesn't mean there isn't crime and homeless issues, there are, just that the entire state isn't a giant skid row like the Right portrays it as.

Blue states don't throw homeless people in prison as a matter of policy, they tend to want to care for the homeless. So there are more homeless people in general in wealthy blue states than in poor red states, because poor red states just throw the homeless in jail. And because blue states are more successful and wealthy, yes, the cost of living can be higher. It's a complicated problem, but the solution to it isn't make everyone poor like in some of the red states.

And the constant drone actually works on Californians too. I've met people in CA talking about leaving the state because of crime. I'm like, "Dude, you live in the Central Coast wine region, there's almost no crime here, what the hell you talking about? Where you going to move?" Texas? Texas has higher crime than California!

Every state has problems, But California is home to 40 million people because it's mostly an amazing place to live and earn a living. Wages are high. There's a social safety net. Crime is relatively low. There's great weather and beautiful scenery. It's economy is a super power.

Democrats need to pick the most Republican State and go after it like Reps have gone after California. Ask every Republican to answer for the crime rates in deep red Louisiana, the poverty in Mississippi, the nation leading drug overdose deaths in Tennessee, the teen pregnancy rate in Mississippi, or how about the life expectancy in states like TN, KY, AL, WV, and MS? Why are people in blue states like NY, HI, MN, MA, CT, and CA living 6 years longer on average than the deepest red states?

This type of stuff needs to start now! Unless we want the US to turn into freaking Mississippi, we need to show the country what Republicans have done to that state now! No offense to DU Mississippians.

My son went to SF last year on a business trip and took his gf. They stayed at a Airbnb with an ocean view. They were able to get in some sightseeing and they both like to hike, so they did some of that, as well. He came home saying they had a great time.

Unbelievable that the two people in my life who are r wingers asked me if he saw drug deals out there all over the streets in SF and did they have to step over the shit that the homeless were leaving on the sidewalks, bc they heard it was like that on Fox “News”. Weren’t they afraid because of the crime? was another popular question.

Same here. Stayed in Half Moon Bay, drove into the city several times. Went to Chinatown, saw the bridge, visited a couple other places to dine. I saw a city not disimilar to my own in terms of crime and homelessness, I live in Grand Rpaids, MI. We saw no "tough" looking parts of town, saw no tents for the homeless. Same city I remember in the 80s and 90s when I visited. But we didn't go looking for the issues either, and I am sure there are some parts where there are issues, same as there are in Grand Rapids.

Been North of there a lot, have family in San Rafael.. Been all the way down from there to LA. Stayed in Santa Cruz and Monterey. Stayed a week in Paso Robles. Flown into San Diego and stayed a week there.

I mean, sure, you can find bad areas in Oakland and parts of LA. Every reasonably sized city has some crime. But just look at how big that state is, there's parts of California that are flat out rural and have small town feels.

The cost of living in California is high, mainly because of real estate prices. But people in CA also make more money than most of the rest of the country.

It's just crazy that Dems have had to defend the Republican myth of California for 30 years and no one has asked Republicans to defend the reality of the deepest Red States at all.

While I agree with you 100% about picking the most Republican state and going after it, the problem with that is it will just reinforce their narrative about Democratic and/or coastal elites looking down on good ol' hard-workin' patriots, a message that sells all too well - not only among them, but among some liberals afraid that's how they'll come across, forcing them to try to finesse a message that should no longer be finessed.

49. It needs to be framed in terms of the middle class
Tue Feb 11, 2025, 10:20 AM
Feb 2025

Many of those Red States do not have a middle class anymore. There are the rich who control and own everything, and then the rest who are just fighting to survive. Frame it in terms of helping the working class of MS, AL, LA, TN, WV, AR, and SC get out from under the tyrany of Conservative economic and social policies. I don't want to middle class in the blue states to be treated like the middle class in red states. I beleive working people deserve a piece of the value that their labor produces. The crime ridden red states eat the lives of young people nefore they ahve a chance to even dream. The terrible heatlh care in the red states is killing working people years before thier blue state counterparts die.

You let Trump and Elon have their way, and the entire country will look like MIssissippi. Crumbling infrastruce, terrible heatlh care, terrible economy, fiscal instability that drives cuts to social programs, terrible crime and a giant industry built around it to make money off from the problem rather than solve it. The people of MS deserve better than what they're getting. It's a complete disaster and if they were their own country, the US might be invading them to stop the oppression.

And I am not picking on MS, there are great parts that people love, but their rankings among the 50 states are flat out sad.

It is like arguing with an Evangelical with logic and facts, but when they are bested, their answer is "Well, the bible says" - case closed. I've participated in my fair share of those kinds of discussions. Now we have right-wingers who just parrot what their leaders tell them: "Fake news" and then they accuse you of being in a cult!

The other answer you get from them is “I don’t worry about it because my life is in God’s hands”

I mean, that’s fine for *you* but maybe some of us need something more tangible??? Like, health insurance that actually pays for care? A democracy that represents everyone? etc.

during the pandemic from those who refused to wear masks or get vaccinated.

Then when they see something bad happen to innocent people, instead of showing compassion, they say it's God's will or the classic "God works in mysterious ways". Don't give money to that homeless person on the street because his misfortune is part of God's plan.

They have an answer for anything that doesn't fit their preconception of the world around them, but there is no logic or reason to it.

That’s why they’ll never put down the people living in those red states. They should talk more about the horrible economies under republicans. Everything on your list other than the first are totally points to bring up.

You always hear the right calling everyone in California a name. Our side doesn’t do that. I don’t want them to start. Stick to economic facts.
