Candidate to lead Michigan Democrats says, 'This is not the Jewish party'
Lansing — Al Williams, a candidate to be Michigan Democrats' next leader, declared during an event last week that the party is "not the Jewish party," a comment that he said was about promoting inclusion but that has drawn criticism from multiple political factions.
Williams, a longtime Democratic activist and organizer from Detroit, is competing with former state Sen. Curtis Hertel of East Lansing to be the Michigan Democratic Party's next chairman. Democrats will pick the winner of the race during a state convention on Feb. 22 in Detroit.
Both Williams and Hertel participated in a Feb. 4 meet and greet organized by The People's Coalition and the Arab American Democratic Caucus, according to a video reviewed by The Detroit News.
At one point, Williams was asked whether the Democratic Party's stances toward Israel and Palestine needed to change and what steps he would take to address the matter.
"Absolutely, I think they need to change," Williams replied. "This is not the Jewish party, this is the Democratic Party. There are more voices than just Zionists in this party. There are more voices than just Jewish Americans within this party. There are more voices than just those anti-Arab American voices within this party."
