Published Feb 11, 2025 at 9:05 AM EST
Billionaire Elon Musk has said there is widespread fraud taking place in the payment of "federal entitlements" like Social Security.
Social Security benefits are paid to more than 70 million Americans on a monthly basis, and help form the bedrock of income for many retirees, survivors of deceased claimants and disabled people.
Musk, who was selected by President Donald Trump to head up the non-official Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been tasked with streamlining government processes and cutting spending. But critics have raised the alarm about an unelected official gaining access to the payment records and personal details of Americans.
Musk wrote on X on February 11: "At this point, I am 100% certain that the magnitude of the fraud in federal entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Disability, etc) exceeds the combined sum of every private scam you've ever heard by FAR. It's not even close."
It follows another post from February 8 in which Musk said he was told there are currently over $100 billion per year of entitlements payments to individuals with no Social Security Number or "even a temporary ID number."
According to the official Social Security Administration website: "You need an SSN [Social Security number] to work, collect Social Security benefits, and receive certain government services."

(57,757 posts)He's coming for our SS. Fraud is a transparent excuse. That asshole wouldn't know where the fraud is.
"Seniors, their families, and people with disabilities most certainly cannot trust Trump and Musk with their crucial federal benefits - or their personal data. We hope that the courts will halt this effort to hijack the Treasury Department's payment system for blatantly political purposes."
Martin O'Malley, former Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, said at a rally outside SSA offices in Washington: "This is not about efficiency. This is about two things. This is about stealing the personal data of Americans. And it is about taking a lifetime of earned benefits, your Social Security benefits, and turning it into a bitcoin bank!"

(8,497 posts)as is getting their grubby little hands on everyone's personal data. Trump tried that sht at the beginning of his FIRST occupancy. By creating the deceitfully named Residential Advisory Commission on 'Election Integrity." or the equally facetiously named "Voter Fraud Commission."
His henchman (and chief architect of Georgia's pre-gubernatorial voter purge) Kobach, tried to get the personal information of everyone from every state. 44 states responded with bipartisan backlash, by essentially telling 'em, "fuck you."

(4,039 posts)If they just take it away from people without SS numbers, we're good. But since his claim isn't true, we have to assume this is just preparation for attacking it another way.
If there is fraud I think we're all on board for getting rid of that. But to really save it, the income cap on paying into SS needs to be raised. If you don't want SS, it isn't that hard to destroy. If you want it, it isn't that hard to save.
Whatever happens, it needs to be decided by Congress who will be answerable to voters. Then there needs to be a free and fair election. And we shouldn't all be on tenter hooks about that. The very possibility of neither happening is psychological abuse.

(1,406 posts)He helps folks understand exactly how to get the most benefits from social security, Medicare, Medicaid, survivor and disability benefits, etc.
Hes a former Social Security District Manager; former Family Services Specialist, Department of Social Services; former Marine Corps Sergeant; and University Adjunct Professor.
Ed is down to earth and at the end of his videos, spends as much time as needed spontaneously answering individuals specific questions live from his audience.
Hes passionate about protecting Social Security for seniors, disabled, survivors, retirees, disabled children, spouses, and others in every state to get the benefits they earned and need and is not afraid to speak out against the current administration.
In fact, lately hes publicly stated that Elon doesnt know what hes talking about re Social Security, and invites Elon or the administration to call and talk to him.
I rarely recommend a YouTube channel, but hes helped me (and talked me off the ledge a few times as Ive worried about my SS benefits being taken away), and if you havent watched him, I encourage you to check him out.
Just search Ed Weir, PhD. to learn more about him. Heres a link to his latest YouTube video from earlier today.

(4,503 posts)when that first paycheck is issued you also start paying into your individual account per your SS number.
This is also tracked so if you become disabled your record will prove how many quarters (of a year) you have worked. The entitlement payment is much less than a full retirement check. Taxes can be with held.
The disabled person still has to pay a Medicare premium each month.
The benefit payment may be so low that the person qualifies for state Medicaid.

(4,301 posts)So, suffice to say, this stuff scares the crap out of me.
I receive SSI and Medicaid. It's a three digit sum to live off of monthly, but more importantly, the Medicaid helps me to get medications otherwise out of reach to assist with making my disability tolerable to live with. It ensures that I do not go into sudden withdrawal after taking these meds (yes, it happens with non-narcotic meds) and face a crisis of survival.
The unfortunate part is that, as I have been reading it, they intend to try and pass these cuts in the overall budget and so obfuscate the consequences from the people. They would endeavor to stop this action from being confronted by the AGs who have been working so hard lately, the judges who have taken stands, and so on. It'd get down to Congress saying no, and I hope they do on the bipartisan level. If people start losing their Social Security and medical benefits, they will very quickly wake up to what's happening and a lot of folks in the midterms will find themselves without constituents.
It's getting to the time of year where I see my specialists, and I've considered asking them to please come up with plans to wean me off of my medications due to the threats to Medicaid (among other programs). I can't imagine what my life would become, but there's a possibility that I won't have one if support suddenly goes dark.

The good news is that Mike Ware (who is also the IG of the Small Business Administration) refused to step down, firing off this letter to Trump's Director of Presidential Personnel:
https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000194-a513-dd75-adfc-ad972d920000
I am writing in response to your email sent to me and other Inspectors General earlier this evening wherein you informed each of us that due to changing priorities, your position as Inspector General . . . is terminated, effective immediately.
As Chairperson of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), I recommend that you reach out to White House Counsel to discuss your intended course of action. At this point, we do not believe the actions taken are legally sufficient to dismiss Presidentially Appointed, Senate Confirmed Inspectors General.
Specifically, based upon the 2022 amendments to the Inspector General Act of 1978, the President must notify Congress 30 days prior to removal of an IG and provide substantive rationale, including detailed and case-specific reasons for such removal. 5 U.S.C. § 403(b), as amended by the section 5202(a) of the Securing Inspector General Independence Act of 2022 (Title LII, Subtitle A, of P.L. 117-263, 136 Stat. 2395, 3222). The requirement to provide the substantive rationale, including detailed and case specific reasons, was added to better enable Congress to engage on and respond to a proposed removal of an Inspector General in order to protect the independence of Inspectors General.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at Hannibal.Ware@sba.gov.
Sincerely,
Hannibal Mike Ware CIGIE Chairperson

I think what Elon will do is just stop payment to a few million or so and see if they're "real". Then he'll force them to jump through hoops again to requalify, a process which can take months. And he'll target minorities of course.

(9,995 posts)He was told? So we destroy Social Security over a lie he was told. You don't even have to be very smart to know what he is saying is impossible. Social Security has records of every SS # ever issued (and unlike what many people may believe, just any random 9 digit number isn't necessarily a valid SSN. There are mathematical algorithms to assign SSNs and the SSA can look at any 9 digit number and immediately know if it is a valid SSN or not. Payments can only be made to valid SSNs.
It is likely that sometime SS benefits continue to be paid for some time after a recipient is deceased, but the system has mechanisms to quickly identify those situations and that money is required to be paid back. Actual SS Fraud is pretty rare with a large portion likely due to identity theft.

Medicare fraud is much more common, and the Republican Party has rewarded the biggest perpetrator of such fraud by making him a US Senator. But the Government isn't responsible for such fraud. The majority is committed by health care providers. It is they who should be targeted in fraud investigations.

But we determined that, as framed by the White House, only one claim out of 12 was accurate. After we highlighted key errors in the statement to the White House, we received a statement from spokeswoman Anna Kelly: 'This waste of taxpayer dollars underscores why the president paused foreign aid on day one to ensure it aligns with American interests.'"

The same tactic is being used with our paid-into Social Security and for Social Security disability. Musk and his team of hackers are now ransacking the treasury, and the hackers are so skilled they have likely already gone way beyond SS and SSD.

(164 posts)In my view, WSF is commited every year when the cost of living is evaluated. They keep saying that the process needs to be evaluated because they know it is not the true figure they keep using. The 8+ percent we recently received sounded large but in my eyes it should have been closer to 20%. There were very few items that I purchase that were in the 8% range. Not even close. With no due respect for the collateral damage that the incoming tariffs are going to land on us, I am looking forward to seeing the SSI cost of living assessment and the real/true number that will be pronounced as the amount we will be given. Grin or growl, we have to accept it.
An old adage that I often find to be true, "Liars figure and figures lie."

(7,920 posts)Neither Donald or Elon have an in depth understanding of how the SS system or the Government actually work, and with no granular understanding, will see waste in all the wrong places, and not see it where it actually exists.
But Elon has a gut feeling there is waste, so he is going to do it. 'Cutting waste is essential', he says.
If there are cuts, they will hurt people.
But that is the whole aim anyway.

(7,790 posts)They've tried to kill it since it even prior to it being passed. And they've tried multiple ways since then, whittling away at it little bit by little bit... sometimes going in for a big bunch. For example, where did all the extra Boomer money go? We've been paying more simply by dent of who we are as a generation and the number of us, and yet they still say we're going broke. I think we should demand an accounting for black budgets and "petty cash" payouts. R's have done everything short of assassination and impeachment to rid themselves of this meddlesome bill that takes money out of their pockets. And, to think, what got the Libertarians all up in everybody's butt was they were incensed they had to pay into FICA on their first $250k of a salary (although they find ways to get their money without it being called a salary). Just the mere thought of them being on par with us Dick and Jane Does was enough to drive them literally crazy. No wonder they're willing to lie and exaggerate about SS.
I've not seen widespread support among the R's, as a whole, for cutting SS. But this could quickly change if trump really starts kicking their butts to get it done. We know they have no spines.
First thing I did this morning when wakening was to check my account to see if my and hubby's SS checks were DD. I breathed a sigh of relief when seeing them listed as "deposited." Although with other ops today, it seems trump and musk can just dip into a bank account anytime they want and take out however much they want. And I remember the day when we first all began arguing about privacy. Man, is THAT a joke now!

If called to testify before Congress he cannot use those claims. The only thing saving him right now is a very thin Republican majority. That could change even before the mid-terms and he is gambling that it won't happen before the Constitution ceases to exist.
