Easy breezy Resistance task: Flood Google with this:
1. Google Gulf of Mexico.
2. it says Gulf of America
3. Click three little dots to the right of it
4. hit "Send Feedback"
5. hit "Gulf Of America"
6. hit "Inaccurate content".
7. hit "Incorrect", then tell them its name: This body of water is the Gulf of Mexico
8. Repeat task often
EDITED TO ADD
YOU CAN DO THE SAME AT APPLE MAPS
little different but you can report it.

(15,549 posts)... item is showing Gulf of Mexico!!!!!!!
Now waiting for the knock on my door.
I received an email from Google:
"Thank you for submitting feedback for Gulf of America.
Heres what you suggested for Gulf of America:
====================
This is the Gulf of Mexico
====================
If accepted, suggestions will be updated on Google Search where they will help return richer information and more meaningful results. If you are the authorized representative for Gulf of America review these guidelines to get verified.
I did it once, and I added a screenshot of a map in the search that said Gulf of America,. However, when I googled it now, it still says Gulf of America, I am not going to do it again. I have better things to do.

Damn that is a great idea. Thank you At least I have accomplished one thing today.
Over the years I have sent so much positive feedback to Google (the only exception being YouTube, which I have criticized at times). I hope the fact that I am not a regular complainer might make them realize that we mean business--and that this thing they've done is qualitatively different than Google/Chrome making an honest mistake.
Anyway, I absolutely love this! Thanks again.

(13,974 posts)Told them the gulf is international waters and tsf can't rename it. What he can rename is the milage along our shore that is US territory so to be correct the gulf is still the Gulf of Mexico while they can go ahead and call the shoreline the Gulf of America.

(28,133 posts)"Gulf of America." I couldn't find a way to report that misinformation on the Google Map labeled Gulf of America. They only allow edits for places with in address such as a school or business. So I wrote a review of my trip to the gulf of Mexico a follows:
The Gulf of Mexico is the correct name for this geographical feature. Calling it the Gulf of "America" is misinformed, racist, and a craven submission by Google to the whims of President Trump, who does not have the authority to change the name of a geographical entity such as the Gulf of Mexico.

(46 posts)On my iPhone I tried to do this, but could not send the report, 'send' was disabled for "Gulf of America" . If I only typed "Gulf of Ameri" then I could send. if I added the final "a", then 'send' was greyed out. I reported it as "Gulf_of_America" and it was accepted.
I found another place to report a problem, so I lectured them on censorship and courage.

(182,948 posts)The White House apparently wants The Associated Press to use the Trump-approved name for the Gulf of Mexico. If it sounds Orwellian, that's because it is.
The White House's interest in 'Gulf of America' reaches ridiculous new level www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...
— News Hub - A Home for Better News (@thenewshub.bsky.social) 2025-02-12T19:05:46.958Z
https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/associated-press-says-white-house-barred-reporter-gulf-america-policy-rcna191823
But it now appears the broader effort is extending beyond just governmental departments. NBC News reported:
The Associated Press said the White House violated the First Amendment today when it barred an AP reporter from entering an executive order signing. The AP said the White House restricted the reporters access after the news organization did not update its editorial standards renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
In other words, one of the nations largest news organizations was told that it was effectively being punished for calling the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of Mexico. If The Associated Press concerns are correct, the White House had some kind of trade in mind: If the AP wants access, it should use the phrase the president likes.....
The day after the alleged Oval Office incident involving an AP journalist, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt faced additional questions about what transpired. It did not go well.

While the controversy surrounding The Associated Press is important in its own right, theres also a larger concern about the White House and its approach to language. As The New York Times summarized:
Of all the changes underway in Washington, one of the deepest has to do with the very language that is spoken here. In order to remake the government, President Trump and his administration are remaking the language used to describe the government. An entire lexicon of progressive terminology nurtured by the last administration has been squelched. In its place is a new vocabulary, honed by the president and echoed by his many imitators in the capital. It is a vocabulary containing many curious uses of doublespeak.
Were no longer just talking about a twisted form of conservative political correctness, with Republicans calling the estate tax the death tax, while labeling big corporations job creators. Those phrases are part of a partisan game thats silly, but largely inconsequential.....
If all of this sounds rather Orwellian, that's because it is
And will repeat often.

(4,568 posts)From Forbes (was unable to C/P link:
Google has tacitly admitted to removing negative reviews objecting to the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America from Google Maps.It has also turned off the ability to suggest edits or report inaccuracies for the Gulf of America.
We regularly put protections on places during times when we anticipate an uptick of contributions that are off-topic or unrelated to someones direct experience with the place, a Google spokesperson told me in an email, directing me to a blog post dating back to 2023 on the companys rules for tackling policy-violating content."
