Ive owned a Tesla since Jan 4, 2021.
I am not, in the spirit of Sheryl Crow, going to sell it.
The name calling Ive read here via the proxy of Tesla ownership, how crappy it is etc etc, sends the loud and clear message that quite clearly any Tesla owner is a status seeking musk loving idiot.
The car I drive has nothing to do with how I vote.
Mr Ninga suggests I change my screen name to Ilovemytesla. He just gives me heartburn.

His brother worked for Tesla but got laid off a couple of years ago in a mass layoff.
However, we have known about Musk and who he was long before 2024. His antics with Twitter, the way he callously got rid of his long time assistant, his misogyny, the relationship he has with his children and partners, his weird attitude about having zillions of kids, and the way he accused the cave rescuer of pedophilia - it's all been there. None of it is new.

(29,563 posts)Most of the CEOs of tech companies seem to be jerks (remember Travis Kvalnick?)
Before, his influence on my existence was just limited to giving a wide berth to Teslas in case they blew up, but now it's having an actual effect on my life (most of the tech companies do - Amazon has done in retail, Uber killed off cab companies for the most part, Airbnb has destroyed the housing market and created higher rents), but up to now, I could avoid him unless I was out stargazing and had to deal with the train of Starlink satellites and its light pollution.
We need to be wary of these guys. They are not conservative. They're Randian Libertarians, which is far more dangerous.

Though one exciting thing was having my first digital camera with a ?12xs Opitical, and ?40xs Digital zoom.

Been on FB forever.
Just a few weeks ago, I found out that google is bad. But I've been with Google for 25 years! Threw yahoo in the trash decades ago!
Been with Chrome browser for about 10 years. Dumped Internet Explorer around 2009 and went with firefox. Then, I had both Firefox and Chrome for awhile, then Firefox got real buggy and been with Chrome since. I've also got gmail for mass mailings because I can't afford constant contact and can't figure out mail chimp. I use Google docs and use Google Drive all the time too. I share alot of documents because we do team work. The Texas Democratic Party does everything via Google Docs.

(2,937 posts)We live in a small, rural southern town. Up until about a year ago or so, we had only one internet connection choicethe local ISP. Their servers were full and people moving here were dismayed to discover they had no internet options. The lines were not maintained. Our speed averaged 1.24 mbps. Streaming was iffy. Photos emailed from friends loaded like back in dial-up days.
And then Starlink became available. We got it (he was still just your average billionaire moron at the time). Our speed now varies from about 60 mbps to in the 90s. It is highly reliable.
Heres how I see our dumping it as a way to separate ourselves from Musk:
1. We would no longer be paying a little over $100 a month to someone with many hundreds of billions of dollars. Wow, that would show him a thing or two; and
2. We would have an internet speed of 1.24 mbps again and all the limitations that brings.
I think maybe I wont cut off my nose to spite my face.

(984 posts)Overall, its been a great car, the instant accelerration of an EV is great when you need it. I've driven it on several 1000+ mile road trips and have had few problems charging it up. The Tesla supercharger network is great, too, compared to all the other EV charging networks like Chargepoint, etc.
On the downside, the so-called Full Self Driving (FSD) is a major fail, and I don't think it will ever be ready for prime time, at least with only camera-based sensors. Also disturbing is the lack of most physical controls for climate, audio and other functions. You shouldn't be struggling with a touchscreen to work those controls while driving on the freeway.
All that aside, I will NEVER buy another Tesla, at least while Elon is involved with the company.

(1,963 posts)The cars are OK EV's, but do seem overpriced and very expensive to repair, but BIL and Nephew like theirs and the have short commutes so the work well for them.
The new truck looks like a real lemon though. I pity the people who bought those. A whole range of quality and operation problems.

(29,563 posts)It's not stable. The rent goes up (a lot) most years, and it's hard to get outside just for a walk. Most of the new apartments they are building are not meant to be for long term housing. They are studios or one bedroom. You can't raise a family or even live with someone else.
Sometimes I look at the way apartments used to be, much more gracious, with separate living spaces and built-ins, and I wonder how we got to where we think it's okay to cram people so close together, with no green space, and charge them preposterous amounts of money to live that way!
Niagara
(11,640 posts)I worked 2nd shift which was more like 3rd shift hours. The rest of the apartment residents worked first shift and all the apartment maintenance was done during the day (when I was trying to sleep).
When I first moved in, they didn't tell me that they were going to put on a new roof. So my first few weeks I got woken up at 8am.
When maintenance would check the furnace or filter or whatever else, they would wake me up.
When I worked normal hours I got off work at 1am, when I worked mandated overtime I got off work at 4am.
The parking rules were one vehicle could park in front of the building and the other car could park across from the building for each apartment resident. When I got off work either at 1am or 4am, there were zero parking spaces for my vehicle and I had to park in front of a entirely different numbered apartment building and carried my 2 year old son in the dark and long distance to my apartment.
I know, I've been there. It didn't take me long to apply for a FMHA mortgage and get approved.
However, it was for a very brief time but I was homeless as well.
So I understand both situations and know that neither as desirable.
When I went through a divorce much later in life around 2012. I couldn't believe that rent was about $600 to $700 a month and I didn't make that much to pay that much. I ended up applying and getting approved for a section 8 apartment. The building and the upkeep of the section 8 apartment was nice but most of the residents were terrible and loud.
It's still much better than being homeless. It's also much better than being in an abusive marriage as well.

(8,202 posts)There was a time that owning a Tesla was not just a car purchase, but a way of doing good in the world. As someone else mentioned on another thread, years ago, it was the only " viable" EV. That is no longer the case. There are other EVs on the market to choose from if someone wants to buy an EV.
. When it comes to the status issue- I think folks are referring to the horrendous cyber truck that just screams "look at me, look at me" and not in a good way.

(15,377 posts)When I bought the car he was an oddball (colonizing mars) who was doing some good things (tesla, spaceEx.) In 2018 there were no other EVs that were at all competitive with the 3.
Shortly after I bought it he had his notorious Thai Cave Rescue Meltdown, and I started to suspect that he was more than just odd.
Since then it has all been downhill with Musk.

I know I'm weird, but I have NEVER understood having a car payment, not paying cash for your car in the first place.
I despise debt, and have avoided it most of my life.
Oh, and aside from the obscene cost, remind me of how wonderful a Tesla is, and how one could possibly make more sense than, say, a 2017 Honda Civic. Paid for in cash.
CoopersDad
(3,297 posts)Paid for in cash.
The Civic needs perpetual care, oil changes, timing chain replacements, lube, and refills with fossil fuel.
A Tesla or other EV needs tires, wiper blades, washer fluid.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,490 posts)It does NOT need perpetual care. An oil change every fifteen to twenty thousand miles. Yes, that's right. 15-20 thousand miles. Don't know when I've ever had a timing chain replaced.
Cost of gas is trivial for me, since I drive very little and am right now getting gas once every six weeks or so. Unless I make a cross-country trip, which I do less of these days.
