My Take: TSMC which is a Taiwanese company, owns the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process and technology. Intel (USA) comes 2nd. It is to the national security interest that we maintain our technology competitiveness through Intel and/or catch up to or acquire the advanced process technologies TSMC has . With Chinas aggressiveness in Asia and threatening to invade Taiwan, it is unthinkable that they would take over the worlds most advanced semiconductor company should they invade Taiwan. With Intel currently struggling, the appeal of TSMC acquiring or taking over Intel operations have some positive benefits - technology transfer and moving its advanced semiconductor plants to the US, or increased likelihood that the US will help defend Taiwans (with this administration you cannot rely on that)

(933 posts)God help us if he acquires Intel. He would probably move the operations to TX and FL, just to fuck over Oregon.

(252 posts)Even if Intel had the exact same level of tech as TSMC, that's no guarantee that they'd be able to compete with TSMC. There's a lot more to it than just the tech. Intel got itself into trouble partially due to its management, culture, decision-making, etc. Even if Intel had the tech and everything else that makes TSMC the world-leader, now the market landscape will have changed with two viable top-tier fab players. IOW - there's no single-variable solution.

(104 posts)They know how to remake themselves over thier 50+ year history theyve been able to redefine thier products - from. Memory to processors to data centers and to AI. Theyve seen ups and downs but seem to always emerge. In this case it is not only to compete wot h TSMC but to keep advanced semiconductor manufacturing away from the CCP
