Workers at the Federal Aviation Administration sounded the alarm this week after President Donald Trump and Elon Musk oversaw the firing of around 400 employees.
The Associated Press reported that the FAA began notifying employees last Friday that they were being fired. One air traffic controller said the move included FAA radar, landing, and navigational aid maintenance staff.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy insisted, "Zero air traffic controllers and critical safety personnel were let go."

First and foremost this Duffy character is a fraud...............and to the CEO's within the commercial aviation industry.......is your greed that important to have this Duffy character jeopardize the flying public...........because there has not been one peep from any of you...........not fucking one..............you should be canceling flights.................not today but yesterday......... .

(22,599 posts)I'm not normally afraid of flying, but I wouldn't even consider it right now.
I feel for anyone in this country who really needs to get somewhere and doesn't have a choice.

(44,827 posts)She says they fully expect to be fired after tax season. Use them up and throw them away thats Elon Musk.

(9,459 posts)The accuracy of all those navigation aides and radars to ensure flight safety is critical to all IFR operations, and a lot of VFR flights. ALL OF THEM! So, sure; what could go wrong?

(13,482 posts)At a lot more money, if course, to account for CEO profits and bonuses. Musk and Trump are simply wrecking government. Nothing theys doing will gave anything but a minimal impact on the debt hut will hamstring government agencies for years.

(976 posts)She lives in Massachusetts and I live in Florida. I usually try to fly up a couple times a year to visit. She's unfortunately a Trxmper. We don't talk politics but now, I am not going to fly because of the FAA being fucked with. I will either drive or take a train. We are both in our 70's so driving from Florida will take two days up and back. I last flew up in December but that may be the last time I see her.

(13,601 posts)I am going to let them know Im avoiding air travel until I have more confidence in the safety of flying. (I know driving is overall much more dangerous statistically, but flying seems much riskier with the slash-and-burn crowd in charge.)
If enough CEOs notice that the Mump regime is bad for business, we might start seeing some resistance from the C-suite.

(22,599 posts)Those safety statistics are based on normal conditions, with normally functioning air traffic control, etc. Right now, it's a total crapshoot, from what I can see.

(22,599 posts)And not just because of the flight. I'd be leery about the reception Americans may be likely to get in Italy or any other NATO Country right now. (In terms of general unpleasantness, rather than physical safety, but still.)

(13,003 posts)the massively Un-Friendly Skies after Reagan fired half the Air Traffic Controllers.......
Every commercial airline pilot I talked to was not only extremely anxious, but frightened sick about having to fly a passenger airliner for a whole year or two after that..........
Air traffic was slowed greatly, with the controllers having to space planes 6-9 minutes apart instead of the normal 3 minutes.
Normally, one pilot flies the plane, the other pilot handles communication, instruments, etc. Pilots told me that during flights after the firings, one pilot flew the plane, handled communications, watched the instruments, and the other pilot was watching the skies around them at all time......
They all told me, that they were constantly having to apologize to the passengers for the serious delays, AND, they were ordered by Reagan, NOT to use the words "Air Traffic Controllers" when telling them why there would be a delay,, but were only allowed to say "an ATC delay" if they said anything, because the passengers did not have a clue what ATC meant......
It takes THREE YEARS of training for Air Traffic Controllers, and they have to pass extremely tough tests before they are hired to start training..... Before Trump started screwing with the ATC and offering them early retirement, etc. the ATC were running about 30% understaffed. It is said to be the MOST stressful job, and yet, all controllers are having to work tons of overtime, which makes it even more difficult to stay on the top of their workload............

(22,599 posts)I can't help wondering. Between Trump's tarriff threats, his big talk about taking Canada over, and the way Vance and Hegseth behaved at the NATO summit, Canadians have lots of reasons to hate us right now.

(60,320 posts)Blue Americans will be welcomed. Feel free to wear an American flag pin, for example. But a big flag tshirt might get raised eyebrows. If you like places with good gun control, healthcare paid by sales taxes, and a multi-cultural milieu, Canada is the place for you.
Red hatters generally will be served professionally and coolly, though of course 15% will cheer them.
Of course I don't speak for all Canadians or even some of them and I haven't conducted surveys or gone undercover in American garb. Everyone's experience will be different and it is possible to have a bad time. If a guy is pre-disposed to abuse hotel staff, they are likely to do it anywhere and have a bad time anywhere. But I'm pretty sure we're all hungry for tourist dollars, which are untariffed.

(22,599 posts)I love Canada. Haven't spent a lot of time there, but loved it and want to go back. I know this country normally has a great relationship with Canada, and I love and value that highly.
I realize now that I was speaking out of my own embarrassment about this administration's behavior toward our allies and my fear of lasting damage being done, which I would really HATE to see happen (with Canada or any other ally of ours). Thanks for talking me down off the ledge!

(277 posts)my dive trip to Florida for this weekend. Will not fly with the recent cuts made to the FAA. Let the hotel, Southwest and the dive op know why. I know this hurts other people, but until this starts hitting the tRumpanzees financially, nothing is going to change.
