People are fleeing Texas and Florida, account for 30% of ALL homes For Sale in USA

Well not a surprise at all!

Both Texas and Florida have very repressive state governments.

Two Republican states that…
HATE women,
HATE minorities,
HATE diversity,
HATE poor people,

New doctors avoid Texas like the Bubonic Plague
Young WOMEN avoid Texas and Florida,,, state will KILL women by denying care.

Immigrants are leaving Texas and Florida

———

People are fleeing Florida and Texas. As of Jan. 2025, those states collectively accounted for over 30% of ALL homes for sale in the US. Florida had 157,221 active listings—the highest in the country—followed by Texas with 102,552.

Repressive state governments and rising insurance are to blame.

I hear that shit all the time

The Bullshit news RAH RAH RAH ..”Companies moving to Texas”….

And that doesn’t mean all the employees move, quite the opposite.
A LOT of employees just do NOT move, upper Mgmt does usually move,
The rank and file may or may not move,

A LOT of workers just do not move, and those that do move… quite a lot move back
to where they were living before..

I’ve seen people ‘think’ they will like Texas,,,, BUT THEY REGRET MOVING.

It all depends, if you’re single, or whether you have a family and kids,
Whether your spouse’s job is too important to move away….

Retiring soon?

I was questioning why these companies are in such a rush to move to a jurisdiction that is so hostile to their own employees.

Employees are an investment. It costs thousands, tens of thousands of dollars to train a competent employee. You’d think retention would be a priority.

But, nah, in the US it seems not to be. The political statement of being in TX or FL seems to be.

Feb 2025

Texas property taxes are SKY HIGH

All the working class and middle class Texans get to subsidize the wealthy in Texas.

The wealthy in Texas get a FREE RIDE screwing everyone in Texas that isn’t wealthy.

The State govt has made sure of that.

There is a Reason Texas is constantly ranked last or at the very bottom of the 50 States.

For quality of life TEXAS IS LAST.
For Women …Texas is at the very BOTTOM
FOR public education…..at the bottom
For environment…..just sit back and enjoy the pollution from oil industry.

Regulations a problem for companies?? No problem, the Texas legislators just eliminated
that regulation.

Once a paper mill in East Texas was polluting the water on big reservoirs above allowed by
the state regulations—- No problem, State Legislators just changed the amount of toxins allowed
so paper mill could continue to pollute as it was already polluting

Texas Is A Great state to have no regulations worth a damn.

We moved from Southern California to Fort Worth for 3 years for my husband’s job, 2013-15. We kept our California house. Houses in Texas that were as large and as well-appointed as our California home were 1/2 to 1/3 the price in Texas. My husband showed me the difference in property tax. Wow!! Those Texas homes annually cost more than our home in the LA area. Additionally, auto registration cost much more in Texas. It was more along the lines of what Gray Davis had suggested in California and what had led to Davis’s recall. That’s when we got Schwarzenegger. Anyway, Texas’s lack of state income tax was no great financial help. States must get funding somewhere. If it’s not from income tax, it’s likely from fees or other taxes.

Property taxes SKY HIGH, some the HIGHEST in entire USA

utilities EXPENSE SKY HIGH ELECTRICITY RATES
SKY HIGH ELECTRIC BILLS FOR TERRIBLE SUMMER HEAT

Sky High natural gas rates thanks to Republicans

Property Insurance isn’t cheap, If you live near coast,
Especially Houston,,, EXPENSIVE EXPENSIVE!!

The REPUBLICANS State Legislators allow sky high auto insurance rates
to rip you off.

Texas Republicans refuse to allow cities and counties to have a livable minimum wage law.

Texas Republicans refuse to enact just about any workers protections.
Texas Republicans refuse to allow Unions for public school teachers to

Lot of corporate heads are STUPID too and don’t value their employees

Lots of firms moved hdqtrs from Calif to Texas,
But that didn’t mean ALL the employees moved.

The SF Bay Area, especially the Silicon Valley firms have had problems
with housing affordability for their employees—- that’s been a problem with affordability
For DECADES.

But like Tesla moving to Texas…..a LOT of employees did not move,
Many just stayed and got employment elsewhere.

Texas doesn’t have “much” in outdoor environments like California,
Weather SUCKS in Texas
Gulf of Mexico waters on Texas coast are murky, and Texas beaches leave a lot to be desired compared to beaches on West Coast

This is 100% true. However, modern business philosophies don't believe this. They see employees as just annoying things that get in the way of profit. Moving to Texas, a very anti-worker state, makes screwing over workers easier.

Case in point: the city of Austin (among others) had a regulation that when the heat index was too high, employers were required to provide water and frequent rest breaks to outdoor workers. If employers valued the workers, this would be a no brainer (and the regulation unnecessary). Employers lobbied the Texas legislature, and legislation was passed that forbade any city to have such an ordinance. They usurp city autonomy all the time.

In my tiny little world…..

I mainly see people moving out of Texas big cities, to many places..
Back to Calif, Back to Minnesota, Back to Boston or New England.

Two Doctors down the street, fairly young pair married both docs,
Both bailed on Texas. I just can’t recall what state they moved to, think it
was Wisconsin or maybe Michigan

A couple years ago, a rightwing retired SF cop, MAGA with a fantastic pension,
gave up on Texas and moved back to SF Bay Area,,, his wife just hated
Texas and plus their family was still in Calif.

And see some moving within Texas to smaller towns to get away
from traffic, they hate the high property taxes here.

But there are a few wealthy MAGA that moved to Texas around me,,in last 5 years
But I don’t know anything about them.

they had a massive boom because of all the MAGAts want to live under Desantis's authoritarian control of the state (basically everything drumpf is doing now is modeled on Florida)

now that the MAGAts have cemented FL as a red state guessing the reverse is happening... people heading for bluer pastures.

Not much sense stating in a place where the cost of living is exploding AND you are hated.

After 2004 redistricting, quality of life for average people began declining.
The one bright spot is diversity. anglos are only about 35% of the population, and with the younger generation, anglos are only 20%.
There are just so many types of Latin Cultures, Black Cultures, and Asian Cultures that we experience every day.
You can find plenty of rural areas that are majority Hispanic or Black.

“If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent Texas and live in Hell”

is a famous statement of U.S. General Philip Henry Sheridan in 1866. A later account (1883, below) tries to temper the impact of Sheridan’s words.

The statement is sometimes cited as “If I owned hell and Texas.”

One good thing about Florida is no property tax. Otherwise probably not much else. It has beautiful areas. I have never been there nor to CA. A friend keeps asking me to visit CA but I don't want to fly.

They may not admit it, but insurance companies believe in climate change, and are denying coverage in accordance. It isn't just that it's getting more expensive; increasingly, you just can't get it.

And then there are the bugs. Big bugs in Florida. You could adopt them as pets.

I do not see how “there are a lot of houses on the market” translates into “people are fleeing the state.”

There is not much logic behind much of what apoears on the internet.

That "way too many that move...here a year or two." It's just some supposition you are making with no basis in fact .

Then you make this statement about the state being consistently ranks at THE BOTTOM. (?) Of what? The link talks about education from the prestigious WalletHub where Texas is 41. Not great but not the bottom either. And this is just for education. The ranking decided by a financial writer from some obscure website.

Texas. Versus Massachusetts

Massachusetts is THE TOP State in Education
Texas is a backward cesspool compared to Massachusetts

Just the higher education alone is a stark difference.

There is no comparison.
Texas just doesn’t have it.

———-

https://www.boston.com/news/education/2023/01/30/massachusetts-education-ranking-schoolaroo/

Mass. ranks 5th in the nation for education, 1st for student success

Massachusetts has the fifth-best education system in the country for 2023, according to a report from Scholaroo. Four New England states made the top five list.

Scholaroo is a scholarship-finding service that also releases data reports related to education. Its 2023 Best and Worst School Systems scoring is based on three categories: student success, student safety, and school quality.

The state’s education system ranked first in student success, fourteenth in student safety, and sixth in student quality. It scored an 83 overall, putting it three points behind New Jersey, which ranked first overall.

Student success accounted for 25 points of the total, student quality for 35 points, and student safety for 40 points. To measure student success, Schoolaroo used 40 considerations, including test scores, high school dropout rates, and college-going rates.

In a breakdown of these categories, Massachusetts was found to have the third lowest dropout rate, the second highest math test scores, and the fifth highest dollar spent per student.

Teachers in the state also have one of the best compensation rates in the nation, and students have the second-highest average ACT scores across states, according to a release. The state also has the second-largest number of public high schools ranked among the country’s top 100.

Despite 422,075 people making the move to California in 2023, many more residents (690,127 people) moved out. This trend has been consistent for several years, leading to an exodus of 433,000 former residents between 2020 and 2023. This highlights California’s high cost-of-living issue, which is driving many residents to seek more affordable alternatives elsewhere.

I know a few who lived and worked in Texas,

And RETIRED to MEXICO

One was principal at Middle school, AND retired with
a DAMN GOOD PENSION, Her husband was also a Coach/Teacher that retired
with in a year or two of each other

So they had TWO really good pensions,
I would guess about $80,000 a year PENSION
SO a good guess is about $150,000 to $170,000 combined

They sold their house in north Texas,
AND THEN GOT THE HELL OUT OF TEXAS !!

AND MOVED TO MEXICO !!

They bought a house in Mexico, about 2 hours north of Mexico City,
Utility costs are minimal compared to Texas,
About 70% less utilities expenses now

Great savings to live in Mexico.
About 40% to 50% cheaper
But they bought a house in Mexico BEFORE the pandemic hit
Pool, hillside views, a maid is inexpensive,
And if they want to COSTCO and HEB are within an hour’s drive
A few things are more expensive,,, like cell phones, especially if you want an APPLE

Less stress
Less traffic
People are friendly
Crime is far lower than compared to North Texas

And No REPUBLICAN assholes.

A person moving from Kissimmee to Orlando is still in Florida. But, that's 2 home sales.
Same with someone moving from Pearland to The Woodlands near Houston. 2 sales, but not necessarily flering the state.
What I didn't find in that thread was what % those sales are attributable to actual flight from the state.
Remember, those 2 states have 17% of the population, so the floor on % of home sales is not zero.
I can't completely accept this posters enthusiasm without knowing the details
I hope he's right, but not convinced there's much there.

They have family there. He's an endocrinologist and she's a psychologist. They have an almost 2 year old son.

Personally, I think they're nuts. It would have made more sense for their relatives to move here in NC, but they will also be closer to family that is still in Puerto Rico.
They will rent in FL. Their house here went under contract the first week it was on the market.
