Fetterman Staff Quit Amid Frustration Over "Just Working on Israel All the Time"

The exodus of staff from the office of Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., continued Thursday with two new departures. The exits of the longtime staffers reflects a deep disillusionment in Fetterman’s office with his disavowal of progressive politics and turn toward the right in both his openness to working with President Donald Trump and his embrace of strident pro-Israel positions.

The office’s “major staff turnover,” as one team Fetterman veteran put it, comes amid a tough hiring environment for Democratic staffers in Washington. “I don’t find this as a surprise,” said the former Fetterman campaign staffer, who requested anonymity to protect their livelihood. “I think the staff is probably frustrated that working in the Fetterman office means you’re just working on Israel all the time.”

“This is a guy who came in talking about being a champion for labor and he’s gone pretty quiet on it,” they said. “This is a guy who, since Trump won, is for lack of better word basically a useful idiot for Republicans. He’s supporting stuff and it gives them cover to say, ‘Look it’s bipartisan, we got Fetterman.’”

The most recent departures are two of six from Fetterman’s office since his hard pro-Israel turn after the October 7 attacks in 2023. Three of Fetterman’s top communications staffers left his office last spring after he claimed he was not a progressive amid criticism from his left-leaning colleagues over his aggressive pro-Israel stances. After that round of resignations, Fetterman hired a new communications director, Carrie Adams. Adams then left the office last month. Fetterman posted an opening for a new communications director on Wednesday.

We are now seeing the war on “useless” federal workers come to bear. This type of comment helps drive the right wing narrative that governmental workers and elected representatives are mooches taking advantage of the hard working taxpayers. Elected members get exactly the same heath care as every other federal worker. Stop carrying water for the forces that want to dismantle our democracy.

You stated that Sen Fetterman, who is a major disappointment, received gold plated medical care that is far beyond the health care available to everyday people due to his position as a United States Senator. I responded that his health care plan is the same as every other federal worker.

I further said that the whole misconception around federal officials as well as government workers, that they have extraordinary generous benefits, is part of the right wing assault on democracy and elected representation. I urged you not to repeat these lies as they erode trust in our system. Is that clear now?

I thought Fetterman ran a brilliant campaign that could be a model for other Democratic campaigns in purple and even red states and districts.

Increasingly, it's looking like he ran a great campaign because he's essentially a Republican. This says terrible things about the DNC strategy.

I still think Washington depressed him (hell, he said almost exactly that). He might have just decided "what's the use" and quit fighting, though that seems out of character. He may be subject to pressures about which we know nothing, but if so, of course, we know nothing about them and overtly he just seems to have turned his coat.

Israel has only existed since 1948 so I guess your reference to a "long, long time" is the usual slur on Jews. Absolutely disgraceful, unacceptable bigotry.

I suggest you self-delete and learn something about the history of antisemitism.

But I'll agree, Mr Fetterman's attitudes seem to differ greatly from how he presented himself. And his current conduct seems to differ somewhat from his past conduct. I wasn't aware that Israel had become his chief concern, as the staffer is alleging. I am aware that he has become an apologist and accomplice to the man he called a "jagoff" just a few months ago.

Now, the concept of a true patriot trying to work with an Administration of the opposite Party, and with whom one has the odd political difference is reasonable and even laudable. But that ignores the fact that this Administration is like no other (except its previous incarnation), and that the situation today is far from "politics as usual," and that the Administration's plans and actions are such that trying to work with them crosses the line from being a patriot to being a Quisling.

According to Track AIPAC, John Fetterman received $347,710 from the lobbying group.

Only one congressman from the Keystone State received zero dollars from AIPAC:

Democratic Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12)
