(14,162 posts)He's be smart enough to handle it.
He's my first choice for president!
JustABozoOnThisBus
(24,677 posts)... he'd have to resign the Senate to become president.
Then the MI governor gets to pick the replacement senator. And that governor will most likely be a Republican, because the Dem vote will be split between the Dem candidate and the Independent candidate (Duggan).
He'd be a good Senator if he wants the job.

(4,440 posts)A lot of people lost respect for Beto for allowing his ambition to get ahead of his experience and common sense. I think Buttiegeig could make a similar mistake be running for president in 2028. I might be ready to have him as president, but millions of others are simply not.
He is one hell of a politician but I don't think he should try to move so fast. He needs a fuller resume as an elected official.

(51,277 posts)But I want him in the 2028 contest slamming the GOP.

(59,029 posts)But I am afraid hes too good, too smart, and too educated for this fucking shithole country we apparently are living in now
.. the 70 million MAGA morons seem to have a chokehold on the USA and another 70 million or so (non-voters) are too apathetic and pathetic, leaving the rest of us fucked over.
It would be great to live in a nation where Pete B. is the president.

(172,746 posts)the name Obama with Mayor Pete's in your last sentence.
I was so proud when Obama was elected, and I'm an old white woman.
I would be just as proud of Mayor Pete. He's as smart as Obama is/was, his demeanor
is great, kind of laid back, and he makes sense! So refreshing.

(2,489 posts)Yes, but if he ran for President, hed probably be running against Glenn Youngkin (Republican Governor of Virginia, whose term ends this year, thank God). Youngkin tries to act like a good ol boy, but he comes off as a pretentious snob - which he is. This is not a guy who is going to fellate a microphone to amuse the Neanderthals.
Personally, Id like to see Pete as President, but he may have to pay some more dues first.

(1,256 posts)And just assume that he will be running against Trump. Start campaigning ASAP, don't stop, be everywhere, make news, get the madman to go after him, fixate on him.

(2,349 posts)I think he's more likely to win senator out of Michigan, than survive (literally) running for the first openly gay president...when there might not even be a next presidential election. And getting in as senator would put him back in the national arena sooner.

(921 posts)There is no one smarter, sharper, with more poise in the dem leadership than Pete.
As far as Im concerned we cannot kowtow to homophobia, anti-intellectualism, anti-expertise, stupidity, hypocrisy, corruption, and hatred for votes. We must INSIST on our positions for intelligence in policy decision making, empathy and morality, facts and truth, and, really, the common sense that TSF and his henchmen and his supporters only pretend to have. We must also demand our media uphold these same standards.
I have to believe that with their own experience and adequate explanations of events and policies, and exposures of republican/authoritarian lies, distortions, greed, and frank anti-Constitutionalism. The vast majority of Americans will vote with us (of course, assuming no obstacles to voting and correct vote counts).

(255,159 posts)As I said, Secretary Pete is the best and brightest - and he can and has done everything. He also has a military background which accounts for his bravery. I'm confident that he could do any job and do it well!

You have to think he had career in mind at least somewhat when he moved there. Wonder how he will compare to Dana Nessel.

What state would he run in? I don't know much about his background.

(5,154 posts)Thinking
always thinking
How many people are against his life-style?
How many Religious people are anti - and wont vote for him because of his lifestyle?
How many wont vote for him because he is a Democrat?
How many people wont come out and vote - looking for a reason.
Trump is taking over the post office which will affect Mail Ballots. Trump is replacing the Election Integrity person and the one in charge of Elections. Trump is eliminating Federal employees, hell lets be honest - Trump is going after the middle-class.
Wondering what the numbers will be
.because before we can worry about 2028, we have to take out a lot of GOP politicians in 2026.

(51,209 posts)Gary Peters is not running for re-election so it would be open.
I think he should go for it.

(266 posts)He should be a formidable candidate for the Senate.
At this point, I prefer the choice of Shapiro, Beshear or Moore for President.

(156,596 posts)I suspect he'll run for the Senate. He lives in the state which makes it the natural choice.
He is so smart, so unflappable, so quick on his feet! He can talk to anyone.
I plan to support him no matter what seat he runs for!

(2,670 posts)That didn't sound like any kind of Democrat to me. I was shocked; I couldn't believe what I was reading. At any rate, I am all in for Pete Buttigieg and would gladly support him for Senator and/or President. I truly hope he decides to run.

(12,529 posts)He is one of the best communicators out there for pro-democracy messaging. Win or lose, he'll make a difference.
For those who say he doesn't have a chance? Things are impossible only when they're not.
Go Pete!

(24,486 posts)Will there be elections in 2026 much less 2028? If there are elections, will they be fair and free? Why would Trump and Musk ever want there to be elections, especially if they are fair and free?
We also tend to believe that most other Democrats are like us for the most part, holding the basic principles of the Democratic Party, choosing to vote for a Democratic candidate.
But the election of Trump last year has led me to believe that we have those who have regularly voted Democratic but who just can't bring themselves to vote for a woman of color to be their president. Also, we have far too many Democrats who are complacent and overconfident because Trump didn't need to be beaten, he needed to be humiliated at the polls.
But unless Pete Buttigieg runs for the Senate in a solid Blue state, I don't think he will win.
And in our fantasy Democratic world he is easily elected president except for the millions of those who consider themselves Democrats who will refuse to vote for him.
Reality may suck, but it is what it is.

(43,850 posts)Theyre going to freak out because hes gay and proud. We need to see him often so he can prove how capable and perfect hed be for the job. I really believe he could put us back on track.

(7,784 posts)That's the only reason I'm hesitant. Not because of him, but because the Democrats (to their credit) ran a woman, then a black woman, and now we're talking about a gay, proud, out male. I want him to run for President... but I also want Democrats to kick Republican butts in '28. Given what's happened the last couple of cycles, do you think he'd be able to run for Prez? He is SO good... and he's a younger generation who seems like he's still an old-style Democrat. I can really get behind that. Besides, his messaging is always on spot, and he seems like he's a genuinely nice guy. I don't drink beer, but I'd love to sit down with him and talk for a few hours!

(43,850 posts)Of COURSE Id love to see Kamala back in. Id love to see a woman in office before I die. But hes so hard to be an ass to unless you just plain admit youre a bigot. And hes eager to make change. I dont think Jeffries, as much as I like him, gives off that bold intelligent eagerness. I rack my brains (wrack?) for someone who will generate trust and enthusiasm and AOC has a shot someday but not yet. I wish I was younger. In twenty years we might take it back. I do hope to see the beginnings though.

(2,019 posts)Such a brilliant mind. I would vote for Pete any day of the week and twice on Sundays. And if he's in Michigan running for senate and I can't vote for him, I'll just have to send some money his way. GO PETE GO!!
