(5,436 posts)You won't have any problem with regulations on them, right? Registration, purchasing insurance for any crimes done with them, having a gun safe, ammo locked down, etc?

(116,017 posts)In which case no, no problem. And I think restricting to 5 or 6 bullets to a clip thingie is ok also. Sorry, don't know the jargon terms. But no. No problem with locking them up, registering, etc etc etc.
Now, up with the bears, different thing. So I guess I am saying that it depends on where and what. If I had something other than a bb gun I'd have it locked up, ammo in separate place, etc.
Edited to remove my laughter and apologize. Sorry. It has been a hell of a couple days.
You are a sane gun owner, with a good reason to own one.

(9,186 posts)Shit, grizzly walked through our upper pasture in the farm by Flathead lake.
I was not attacked. We had cougar too...I was not attacked. Big fucking wolves too. None of my 6 siblings were attacked.
My dad had weapons. He hunted ducks and deer. So in a family of 9, there were 3 firearms. a 30-30 a shotgun and a .22 pistol (rabbit plinking).
Dad never felt compelled to carry while on the fucking farm...I am getting tired of the justifications.
The discussions have to be on how do we control this fucked up senseless killing of innocent people?

(116,017 posts)prior to when I was living there and about 10 miles from where I was living. I felt compelled to carry, along with bear spray and an air horn. Only had to use the gun once when I was there but neighbors ended up killing an overly aggressive black bear that was stalking people. There were plenty of fish and berries but there was one bad bear. So.
Living down here in the lower 48, even in the woods where I do, I've never felt any need to have any sort of gun except to borrow one to scare off a coyote that is persistently hanging around. Other than that? Maybe if I hunted but otherwise? Nope.
The OP says that owning a gun = mental illness. In some cases, true. In others, not. I say it depends.
And there should be ways of regulating how big clips can be, and they should be locked up.
Please do not confuse me with someone who is not trying to stop this fucked up senseless killing of innocent people.

(11,332 posts)I think the comment about mental illness is a wild distortion and probably hurtful to many.

Mental illness runs on a continuum, not black/white. For example, depression is something that can be so mild it basically shows no symptoms. Or it can be so bad a sufferer can't leave his/her room.
The need to own a gun - when no real need exists - is a mild form of mental illness. If a person owns 30 guns, it's a worse form of the same disease.
That's what I'm talking about.

(46,436 posts)I don't own a gun but I know many, many perfectly sane people here in Alaska who do -- either for hunting or protection from predators. Many people here live hundreds of miles from the nearest supermarket (nearest road, for that matter) and must hunt (and fish) to live.
I have no problem with registration, background checks and all the rest, but simply purchasing a gun doesn't make one crazy.
Read my posts in this thread (#8 & #10) for more about what I mean.

(46,436 posts)Being so absolutist and suggesting that all gun purchasers are mentally ill might make even the most reasonable gun owner dig in his heels.
