Elon Musk (Not Donald Trump) pulls out of his ass a proposal to send every American a check for $8,000 (in exchange for what is anyone's guess). Less than 24 hours later, I'm at Costco returning a pair of pants that won't fit my own fat ass - An aspirational purchase justified by Costco's lack of dressing rooms. During the return, I make an innocuous comment about prices going up. The clown at the register comes back with "No worries. Donald Trump's going to be sending us all stimulus checks for $8,000. That should help." If I wanted the furtherance of misinformation, I'd go stand in the line designated "Idiots form a line here." But, I don't. I just want you to process my fucking return. THIS is the world we currently live in. 24 hours is all it takes for fiction to become fact in the minds of the masses.

(18,632 posts)Schadenfreude is all very well and good, but crowing because others will soon be suffering too is what got us into this mess in the first place. Seems to me, there is an inconsistency about complaining that other people are willing to cut off their nose to spite their face... and then being gleeful that all, soon, will be noseless.

(22,231 posts)because some RW blowhard came through her line spouting maga hate nonsense. She could not say anything or leave her station. The medical clinic I go to has signs telling people they have to be respectful of others and then they list what is not acceptable. GUess we all have to do this.

(30,260 posts)Like, does he realize his job is more secure because of Costco's DEI policies has solidified a customer base that hates Trump? Idiot is right.
At the very least, I would have told the guy's supervisor that he was promoting a particular political worldview that doesn't jibe with Costco's stated customer service goals and DEI efforts.

(5,545 posts)But there are some rules. After the first wave of covid had passed there was a sign outside of Costco informing customers that toilet paper could no longer be returned. I was dumbfounded. I had no idea that you even could return toilet paper! All these years I have been flushing it.

(5,439 posts)I could see that being said in jest, which is why I ask. Around here, that would likely be the case. It does seem out of place at Costco given their customer base. Hey, just a thought...

(16,234 posts)but I'd leave a note for the store manager. Don't even have to say anything more than 'the employee at the return desk, Doofus (they wear name badges) was talking politics with me. I come to Costco to shop not talk about that stuff.' Pretty sure the employee would hear about it.

(4,123 posts)The right wingers have been waging asymmetrical information warfare for a long time, and it has gotten worse and worse with social media fanning the flames and giving them lessons on how to be a bully.
Out of politeness, courtesy, respect, etc. many of us just ignore the relentless provocation from the right wing cultists. They think nothing of inserting little nasty talking points into every situation and every conversation. It is bullying, in fact I think that is the entire appeal of MAGA - it gives people license to bully other people, and teaches them exactly how to do it.

(17,783 posts)The clown was a Costco employee? Or another customer returning something?
If he was an employee, I would have immediately asked to see the manager. I dont pay a damn membership fee there to put up with that kind of crap.

(10,489 posts)That would be over 150,000,000 checks for $8000 each. That would cost $1.2 trillion. Musk's latest claim is they "hope" to find $1 trillion is savings (which is a joke in and of itself). And they are not backing off the $4.5 Trillion tax giveaway for billionaires. So tell me again how spending almost $6 trillion while cutting $1 trillion is going to reduce our national debt?
