Paul Krugman on DOGE

Last edited Mon Feb 24, 2025, 12:41 PM - Edit history (1)

Money line on savings claimed by DOGE: Several news organizations, including Bloomberg, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have gone through DOGE claims of savings and found that it’s a steaming pile of, um, DOGEshit.

They have no authority to stop programs funded by Congress or to terminate contracts.

I think the markets are still in the suspension of disbelief phase. Surely the Wall Street billionaires will talk Trump out of doing anything too crazy...

This justifies the continuation of the dismantling of the US government; make the people think the pain and suffering is worth it.
I wonder how long this bullshit can continue before all hell breaks loose across the country.

One of MAGA world's biggest fantasies is that the federal government is actually > 90% fraud and waste, so if "true/real reform" can be achieved their taxes will be reduced to nearly nothing while suffering no ill effects from massive reductions in government services or from a complete rearrangement of worldwide geopolitics due to the withdrawal of US strength and influence.

They'll hang on to this fantasy until it is absolutely, irrevocably proved false. And the only way that is going to happen is for

a) Trump/Musk come forward and say "You know what? We were wrong. We went through the entire federal government in detail and found that it's actually running very efficiently. And we have now a much better understanding of the USA's position in worldwide trade and geopolitics and will work to maintain our dominant position in these areas."

or

b) Trump/Musk essentially destroy the country from within, plunging the US and subsequently the entire world into a combination of The Great Depression v2.0 + WWIII.

Guess which is more likely to happen first?

It’s all assertion without justification or evidence of any kind. SOP for Maga. Amazing what people will accept on mere assertion.

Watching Amy Klobuchar on the view. Stop saying oh we all agree with reforming and saving money. Start saying we are fighting fascism here. I don’t know why they are afraid to express the truth. It seems like they’re too used to accommodating the other side for what reasons?
