Mine comes the 4th week of the month. Its a few days early, so I didnt actually expect to see it at all. Just checked for the fun of it. So, yeah, this is good.
But while I was relieved, I was also thinking, WHY THE FUCK DO WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS EVERY SINGLE FUCKING MONTH THAT THOSE CROOKS ARE IN POWER????

(758 posts)The potential Social Security cuts and elimination altogether concern is really valid.
Any administration that cuts the IRS at tax time and the Air Traffic Control at all (they have been understaffed since before saint Regan. That was the main reason for the strike), is capable of anything.
Some significant number of the people who are concerned about their Social Security payments voted for trump. About time they got concerned

(7,949 posts)but it's still a worry. Mine's due in on the 14th of each month. I get a notice 3-5 days earlier that it's "pending"... what they tells me is the bank is holding onto my money until the last possible moment for that puny little bit of interest. 'Course, if you count all of this is happening to, it doesn't end up being such a puny amount! But I tell you, until that check is actually deposited in my account and active to draw on, I don't trust it.
You may be right about trump. I think he's realizing the Heritage and other main R's have gotten him already boxed into corners with their grandiose 2025 plans. But musk is doing this... and I wouldn't put it past him to do something like kick off whole groups of SS recipients. In fact, I'm looking for him to do just that to us women at some point. My only hope is that we've gotten him out of government by then... and maybe even shipped back to SA, from whence he came. God, can you imagine being his parents? Are they as arrogant and cruel as he is? He sure had to learn it from someplace. But I know my Mom and Dad would be totally ashamed if I even acted a little like he struts around acting, let alone what he's doing to hurt people.
No one thought it would ever be possible to fire civil servants en masse like musk does. Like I said, trump may back down a little, but not musk. He truly is Hitler 2.0. Or... as I like to say... he and trump are Gog and Magog.

(758 posts)I understand acquiring enough money to live comfortably. Two or three times that if you want. But the amount some of these people accumulate is insane.
I have read that it would take $30 billion a year to stop world hunger. I don't know if that is true, but spending your money on that would make more sense than buying a yacht the size of a ww2 escort destroyer.

(7,949 posts)was when hubby and I both were working on gov't contracts and he actually had good money coming in... and I was saving most of it. During this time, the plays CATS and The Lion King came to one of the theaters. Not only was I able to go and take in two plays I really loved... but I was able to buy my Mom and my sister tickets so we could make it a girl's night out and really enjoy ourselves. To me, that's what excess money is for. It's not the "things" you can buy, but the experiences it allows you to share with others.
I've never wanted a hell of a lot of money. All I want is enough to meet my monthly financial obligations (including paying off credit cards each month when they come in), some set aside for unexpected medical and vet bills, a little to donate to the local animal rescue here in town, and a little to just have "fun" with. I'm a woman of small expectations and desires... and it takes very little to make me happy. I'm so far away from these multi-billionaires that there's no way to bridge the gap in understanding.

(13,003 posts)He went into the head of the IRS and told him he wanted him to hire 2000 new auditors. The head of the IRS was elated.
Then, HW told him they all were to target the 15 to 25K a year earners, because THAT was where the fraud was taking place........
The head of the IRS explained to him that that income group usually had to spend all their money on living expenses, and even if they committed fraud it would be such a trivial amount it wouldn't account to much money. He also explained to HW that they had proof that the majority of tax fraud was committed by the 200K and higher income a year earners. And that the amount collected off of their fraud was considerably more significant. HW told him that if he used the auditors to go after the 200+ crowd, the deal was off.
So.....the additional auditors never happened........

(1,007 posts)Social Security is running out of workers. When you freeze hiring, Houston, there is a problem. The Trump administration is not making anything better. It takes years to train the people who work there and because the job is so complicated, no one wants to stay. Elon wants to get rid of all of the workers who are the most knowledgeable. The employees are getting tired of the bullshit and a large portion are eligible to retire. The workload is too much.

(7,949 posts)Say you've worked at the same Fed Job (or DoD for me) for 25 years. You've got not only skill learning to do the job, but all the institutional knowledge and historical knowledge that comes with that position. I know when I retired, I couldn't hurt the person who would be taking my position, no matter how much animus I had towards the idiots blowing off my disability. So, I spent all weekend... practically every hour on the weekend, even going without sleep, so that I could create a user manual of the position. It ended up being over 200 pages, just to explain how to do my job, what to expect from whom, and when they should have the info to you, etc. No one even said "thank you." But I left the damned job with a clear conscience. I can tell you if I was leaving under the circumstances right now, there's no way I'd have done a tenth of what I did for the next person. And there you have a big problem. Critical, complex positions with no training and no OJT to apprentice with. It's going to be so screwed up, and I hate to say it, but the fed workers who are fired have every right to just pick up their stuff and walk out. Period. Treating them like they are 5 years old is totally freaking insulting. "Name 5 things".... and now I read where they're going to use AI to go over all these notes. Ask me how much I trust AI! THIS should be a firing offense right there... being fired by a machine that has no history, no knowledge, and no expertise on your particular job. I am so p'o'd about this, and I'm not even working any longer! But I have so many friends and family who are caught in this web and are almost beside themselves with worry.
The man has no right to do this to any American worker, especially since he was neither born here, nor has he held a job here. It's just so frustrating and infuriating not to be able to strike back at him somehow.

(29,810 posts)... there's no way I'd have done a tenth of what I did for the next person."
This reminds me of a situation when I left a job many years ago. Totally different circumstances, but similar feeling. I'd been the reluctant head nurse of a 16 bed pediatric unit at a rather backwater hospital in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I hadn't wanted the job, but it was the only thing available at the time. Something more suitable came along after 6 miserable months. I gave 6 weeks notice, which I thought was quite generous.
At noon on my last day 3 hours before the day shift was to end, the admins sent a nurse over from one of the 2 adult units for me to orient to being the pediatric head nurse - 3 hours! I thought, "Watch how hard I'm (not) going to try." The hell with it.

(7,949 posts)And no, musk is constitutionally forbidden to be president. But he seems to obey the law just as much trump and maga do. So, who knows... especially if the SCOTUS would make up so law allowing it. He's the devil in the details here. I think it's even more important to get musk gone than trump. Both have to go, but Musk is doing us much more immediate harm at the moment. And that needs to stop... now. Unfortunately, our justice system doesn't seem up to the task of taking care of really bad criminals.

(1,598 posts)So now I am delaying longer after my original delay to see if there will still be Social Security.
Remember, these guys had been trying to get rid of Obamacare (ACA) with only a concept of a plan to replace it.
Then talk of Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security cuts.
I am taking nothing for granted.
And what will happen if they cripple it, defund it or Sunset it. What happens then? And if you don't think they will do that, you're welcome to your opinion.
I'm trying to expect the unexpected. The trouble is I am not even close to thinking the way these Nazis think.
So, currently I'm still working and collecting to see if it's still safe yet.

(4,165 posts)Some family/friends think I'm paranoid and insist they wouldn't get away with ending it. But I know that the system won't survive if someone doesn't try to save it. When they go on about the fraud, they aren't doing that for no reason.
Destroying it overtly might be the thing to ruin them so they probably won't do that--not soon anyway.
So we have to make sure they don't do it by neglect or lies. And we have to win.
Meanwhile, we have to live with this uncertainty. Man.

(5,545 posts)say that there should be sufficient money to pay full benefits until 2035. But these projections are predicated on a normal labor market, because benefits are mostly paid from the payroll taxes paid by workers and employers. I worry that a) Trump could set off a severe recession that could last for years, which would lower the amount that was being paid into Social Security; and b) during the next few years it will be necessary to make adjustments to Social Security and during at least some of this period the party which wants to privatize Social Security is going to be in power.
