WaPo: She hoped Trump's victory would change her life, but not like this

WaPo - (archived: https://archive.ph/GQEya ) She hoped Trump’s victory would change her life, but not like this

Ryleigh Cooper is normally more focused on motherhood than politics. Then came DOGE.
Today at 6:00 a.m. EST

By Emily Davies

BALDWIN, Mich. — Ryleigh Cooper exhaled as she slid onto the couch after nine hours of work for the U.S. Forest Service, still covered in the blue paint she used to mark trees for local loggers. Then she got the text.

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” her union leader wrote.

It was the second Thursday in February, and a historic White House purge aimed at federal workers like Cooper was sweeping the country. But the headlines felt far away from her life in rural Michigan. She figured her job, with paychecks totaling about $40,000 a year, would be safe from the cost-cutting campaign led by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.

Besides, motherhood was her most pressing concern. Cooper, 24, and her husband were trying to get pregnant, but the doctor said that IVF might be their best chance. Trump had promised to make it free. That is what she thought about in the voting booth.

Now she was staring at her phone, learning that probationary workers in the Forest Service were the next to be fired by his administration. Cooper would likely be one of them, her union head told her.

It might make some sense to the common senseless MAGAs of whom many still think dismantling our government means they will have more freedom. They somehow believe that by destroying our carefully assembled government bureaucracy we will stop funding wars, sending aid, "paying people who do nothing", kick out all the criminals (brown), get black people back under the thumb working for their hand-outs, and restore prayer in schools, speak English, etc.. They twist that all up to come up with the conclusion that we'll have more money--a surplus perhaps. Life would be better in 'Merica'.
As white Christians they would all live in a better country "under God" that God-sent Trump would make possible.
No more giving away free stuff, like healthcare, housing, opportunities, and food assistance to those who don't deserve it and shouldn't be part of their dream 'Merica'.
One by one they are finding out what they have broken as it shatters their above delusion, so maybe the slogan would resonate.
Not to the 1% in charge, though.

It was such a lie. Texas and other red states are outlawing IVF because fertilized eggs that don’t pass screening for health* or prove excess to requirements** are thrown out. Anti-abortion fanatics frame that as killing babies.

* Health: some conditions are completely incompatible with life. Want a Tay-Sachs baby? … Didn’t think so.
** Excess: Some women only produce a few eggs (my friend got 3, none of which proved viable) , and some women produce a couple of dozen.

Trump lies like other people breathe. Reading the audience so he can exactly tailor his lies has always been his superpower. I could not fathom how he got so many women to vote for him — I am beginning to get an inkling.

It is sad for her but it is also sad for multiple millions of people.

She voted to fuck poor people, she voted to fuck black and brown people,

She voted to shred the Constitution and to shit on the law, and to keep shoveling money to people who don't need it.

She couldn't tell shit from Shinola and now we all get to pay the price for her bad judgement.

is pretty stunning.

So she "agonized" for fifteen whole minutes before deciding to put an adjudicated rapist in the White House.

Potential blue voter? Perhaps, now that she's been burned and burned badly by "Trumpers and their non-stop bullshit." But all the while she knew those Trumpers would hold her in contempt because of her experience as a survivor. She knew their views about rape were ugly and harmful and wrong. BUT she believed all the rest of their BS? It never occurred to her to question any of it?

Again: she chose a man who rapes over a woman who put rapists in prison.

As a survivor myself, I'd have some choice words for her if I ever encountered her for real.

not give you a pass for doing stupid shit or being an asshole. Nancy Mace constantly brings up the fact that she has been sexually assaulted, as if that is supposed to be a shield for bad behavior. She's just another selfish dumbass that did not care about anyone but herself. Did not care if others were hurt in the process of her getting what she wanted. No empathy from me.

I am a bit tired of being responsible for the feelings of trump supporters.
Back in 2016 - First it was they are the forgotten - they have been left behind - All the media deep dives into trying to" understand their plight".
Then it moved on to don't make them angry, don't piss them off or they won't vote for democrats.
Now it's, don't call them stupid or call out their bigotry, now that they realize their vote hurts them.
No matter what, democrats are expected to coddle these folks and take their feelings into consideration. When do they do that for anyone else?

But more than anything she wanted a baby, so she voted against everything else that she would need to support that "free" baby. 142. "...or chemo treatment..."
Thu Feb 27, 2025, 10:38 PM
Feb 2025

Let's talk about cancer and chemo.

A dear friend of mine has a rare form of cancer, a new treatment for which is on the threshold of being tested in humans, thanks to a study by the NIH. Without this new treatment it's almost certain she will be dead in eighteen months, two years at most. It might be the treatment won't be as effective as hoped. It might be she won't be eligible for the first clinical trials. But this was the only hope she had left. Without it, she knows she's doomed to a very early and tremendously painful death.

And guess what? Because of the Trump/Musk jihad against the NIH, it looks like progress on this new treatment is stopped cold. Clinical trials are on hold. Even if they resume, this delay might well prove to be the margin between her life and painful death.

So please tell me again how I should "walk in the shoes" of someone who has helped kill my friend's last and only hope of survival.

How about she take a stroll in the footwear of some of the people whose lives she's helped ruin? How about she and others like her get confronted with the pain her "agonizing" decision has and will cause so many others?

I suspect the only reason she regrets her decision now is because her own life has been impacted. Otherwise I doubt she'd give one solid shit about anyone else who is being crushed by this monstrous regime.

All things being the same that one vote would make no difference to this outcome. The Electoral College had that covered. Last chance health treatments and IVF have a lot in common. For many they are last chances.
I’m so sorry for your friend and I hope that somehow she will get the treatment that she desperately needs. I hope that this young woman gets her life altering care that she needs. I’m sorry my comment hit you so hard. No disrespect to you or your friend or the fight you are in. I’m sorry this caused you pain. I hope we can turn this around so our lives can get back to the task of loving and caring for each other. It’s our last hope. What others do or think matter not. Peace and love to you. 💗🙏🏼

Fri Feb 28, 2025, 12:32 PM
Feb 2025

but I think people should take some responsibility for thinking through their choices, especially when they have the potential for such deadly consequences.

She lived through the first Trump era. If she was paying any attention at all she would have heard claims such as "Mexico will pay for the wall," "the virus will disappear in the spring, it'll be a miracle," "My health plan -- to be announced in two weeks -- will be so much better than Obamacare..." "People will be so tired of winning..." and on and on and on... For her to believe after all that any promise from this habitual liar demonstrates a willful ignorance I find very difficult to excuse. Had she spent half an hour tracking down the reality of the "free IVF" claim she could easily have seen it for the scam it was.

I'm sure you know the adage, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

The fact that she's a rape survivor willing to see an adjudicated rapist in the White House is just icing on the cake.

People need to be confronted with the reality of the misery their votes have and will cause. Like others in this discussion, I'm beyond weary with all the calls for our understanding, our empathy, our willingness to forgive and forget when those in MAGA world most often respond with a celebration of "liberal tears" and "fuck your feelings." And yes, I know this particular person isn't hard core MAGA, but she was an enabler. Without people like her we wouldn't be in this horrific mess.

And yes, one vote may not make a difference, but this person stands in for many thousands like her who seem willing to see pain and hardship and even death inflicted on others, as long as they think they might benefit in some way.

I too hope we can turn this around. I just hope it happens, if it does, before too many innocent people have to pay with their lives. That's my hope, but I fear the reality will be otherwise.

And I apologize for my anger as it wasn't directed at you... well, yes I have to admit some of it was. Mostly though this story--and others like it I've seen--have me fuming. I'll work through it, but when I think of what a contrast a Harris presidency would have been, and how absolutely unnecessary the pain now being inflicted is and will be, it tears my heart in two. I just wish the Bezos Washington Post would spend some time documenting the horrors being visited upon innocent people such as my friend, as opposed to the disillusion felt by all those poor sad Trump supporters who suddenly realize all the many warnings they heard about the man were true.

Peace and best wishes to you as well.

My daughter in law was nine months pregnant until two weeks ago. My brain and heart were mush. Afraid for her, for the baby and holding my breath that she got the care she needed. It wasn’t until baby was safely delivered that I could let myself breathe. Everything went fine and all is well with baby and momma but I was scared out of my mind. it shouldn’t be with way in a developed country. Whether it's covered by insurance depends a lot on state law, but it was never going to be free - it costs $20K per cycle on average, and multiple cycles are often necessary. It was unrealistic to believe Trump could reasonably promise that kind of a benefit - but I guess people believe what they need to believe if they really want something. many times one must try for a successful implantation. And many times it doesn’t work. Who is going to pay the doctors? The Federal government which is cutting spending on all medical care? Federal law does not require insurance companies to cover IVF.

There are 15 states that require or mandate insurance coverage for IVF. Of course, they are all solid blue states.

Michigan is not one of those states.

Combined with zero sum thinking.

Then along comes a cult leader, carnival barker, flim-flam artist who uses words that seem to promise to make their lives easier, more rewarding, and do their thinking for them, while tackling those that stand in their way.

Trump: He rode into town on a white horse named Deceit, and all the peasants applauded him . . .

"Peasants? Fooled you!" says Trump as he rides his horse through the White House gates, "I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to Important People!"

Trump strongly believes in the zero sum thing - take from the peasants, give to the Important People.

What's that saying? It's a club, and you and I aren't in it!

Your house is being demolished to provide bricks for the castles of the Important People.

Funded by billionaires, Trump's campaign told specific, different lies to people in every demographic. Enough of them believed him.

It would be very illuminating to put all the different groups in a room together and have them reveal to one another what Trump promised them. Great reality show, eh.

I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like ...

Idiot wind: blowing through the flowers on your tomb, blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind: blowing every time you move your teeth ...

Now everything's a little upside down: as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What's good is bad, what's bad is good
You'll find out when you reach the top: you're on the bottom ...

Idiot wind: blowing like a circle around my skull from the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol

1) what Trump's attitude toward women is, given that she "hated what he said about women and hated how he treated them" and 2) .others had accused the POS of sexual assault. She must have known that given 1) that 2) would naturally follow and be quite believable. She could have easily and correctly concluded that the POS is a liar and that his repeated denials of such assaults are not to be believed, and his promise of free IVF is quite suspect.

We pay the price for her and others' gullibility and shallow thinking

In my lifetime, stupid voters led to Reagan being elected, George W Bush getting elected and re-elected even after the disastrous Iraq War, and then Trump in 2016 and then four years after doing an insurrection and being found guilty of rape, Trump again. The American voter cannot be trusted in being a keeper of the nation.

Single issue voters are stupid fools.

Rayleigh is no different.

Hope you won't need Medicaid Rayleigh.

For thinking only about yourself, you deserved to lose your job.

There is always a silver lining and MAGATS who are getting hurt by their fuhrer deserve the pain inflicted on them.

My compassion and empathy are reserved for those who voted for Harris.
